Was looking for cheap flights over the November public holiday and found this.

MEL-CKG return direct for only $323!

Tianjin Airlines are owned by Hainan Airlines and have just within the past few weeks announced a partnership with Virgin Australia, so you will earn VA points and status credits. I believe it will be 40 credits each way.

Doing some research, it looks as though this is a new route starting on October 31.

As this is a new route, I booked for a few dollars more with STA Travel on the rare chance that this routing gets delayed for whatever reason, I figured this might be easier to resolve any problems.

No idea how long the sale lasts, just found this whilst randomly searching for somewhere to go for a few days. Have wanted to visit Chongqing for a while.

As always, Chinese Visa costs are around $100 or so, and a little annoying to get.

  Chongqing is a shithole. There is no centre, but several centres and not really much for a.tourist.

  But Dazu caves are very very close and are amazing and are off the Western Tourist radar. Chengdu is of course only 1 hour by HSR from Chongqing and Sichuan (especially Western) is amazing.

    Ckg is not that bad as you said. The city itself actually is amazing for exploring. You just didn't find the right way to experience the city. The food there and those county towns of this city are all worth to try

      Yes the food is good. It's the. Certainly the place.to have hot pot

      Yes the town's around Chongqing, especially Dazu, are great.

      However, Chongqing offers very little for tourists (even domestic tourists).

      There is no need to neg the post, simply because you do not agree.

        Sorry not mean to neg, just clicked by chance and don't know how to rectify it. Chongqing is difficult for tourists because it's special territory, hard to find direction, but still even in the city you still get heaps to explore. Have to find right local to guide you, tour group or tour guide is hopeless. And worth to go to WULONG, where Transformer 4 filmed at there. Now another county town has the glass bridge built above a cliff, gotta try it one day.

  Chongqing is on the 72-hour visa free destination list. If you want to do a dog leg to another destination outside China.

  Tempting… if this offer stays up for a few weeks I might book it.

    I am pretty sure you are not meant to leave the city limits on a transit pass. However, how this is enforced I am not sure. Although it could be problematic picking up the HSR rail ticket without an actual visa (am not sure, but worth investigating).

      Well then I guess you can take a bus or a hire a private car. You are correct, picking up the train ticket might be an issue.
