Great computer for the price. Not recommended for children BYOD in high school since they have to keep it in their backpacks and because of their heavyness, not ideal. Though, good device if you are leaving it at home or just bringing to work and back should be OK. I have one personally from the eBay deal for $721.65

    • 1.87kg. Bugger. Bro is after something light and powerful for around $1500-2000.

      • +1

You can get an dell xps 13, they're great lightweight laptops in that price range

Not recommended for children BYOD in high school since they have to keep it in their backpacks and because of their heavyness, not ideal\

Over a decade ago in highschool we use to carry 4 textbooks in our bags. This is nothing. Lightweight baby!

      • +4

Personally I use this excuse just to make sure they get a laptop that can't play anything above gba era.

    • +2

I got the same deal. Seems awesome so far. Thinking about adding another 8gb RAM. I'll be taking it to uni, but I don't have much of a walk. Hogwarts is right, it's kind of bulky and not exactly featherweight so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone small.

    • how is the battery life?

      • +3

It's not for you if you're looking for an all day laptop. Probably get around 4 hours of continuous light use? I'm usually playing games on it and it's closer to 2 hours.

        • +2

I get around 8 to 9 hours in battery saving mode

        • +2

For me on battery saver mode it lasts at least 10 hours just browsing and on word

        • @doctorwatson:

I guess I've never really used it like that yet - uni break. Hopefully I get the same results.

        • Yeah I had up to 4hrs battery life at the start as well with light use, but I figured it was because of all the Lenovo bloatware which I never intended to use.

So I just installed a fresh new copy of Win10, and now it's about 6 hrs at least (not battery saving mode)

        • @ghhl1002:

Oh really? How did you do that exactly? If you don't mind a super brief explanation? I mean, I know I could google, but it's better hearing it direct from someone who has just done it.

    • +3

I got this for my Year 10 daughter in April this year and she hasn't complained about its weight.

      • "heavy" laptops are fine, dunno why people are bitching about it. At worst its good exercise.

    • I carried a 3kg performance laptop around on my back for 3 years (plus whatever else was in my bag), walking to and from school everyday (30 minute walk each way) and never really struggled with it. So long as it's not hanging 'lowrider' on your back like some teenagers do, you shouldn't really feel a kilo or two extra.

      • You need a backpack with a strap that goes horizontally across the front of your chest. Makes a gigantic difference.

  • +7

Can't match the recent eBay special price?

  • +8

Just so people know, the i7-7500U is dual core , 4 threads. Which is why it's a bit cheaper. the HQ series would be quad core

    • I can't think of anything that would really stress it though..

    • Hi, would this be sufficient for CAD applications? Am considering getting one for the Mrs who CADs a bit. Thanks

      • Which CAD? UGS NX / Solid works?
If it's anything else, and not complicated model, it should be fine.
I would never recommend a laptop for CAD work especially if you're using it every day. Better value to buy a desktop

        • Thanks for the heads up. Wifey uses Autocad LT and prefers an 14" screen to carry. Presently she's using a pentium Dell with 4GB RAM so this thing should fly…

The only issue om facing is that I can't combine TA's coupon code with warranty and Cashrewards bonus :(

  • +2

been using this since 2 months, bought it on a previous deal for 949AUD (16GB ram though). and loving it!

    • +1

I upgraded to the 16GB ram with this deal, applied the coupon code and the price came to $943! Seems too good of a deal to miss.

  • +2

Windows 10 Home on a business laptop - bizarre choice. To buy the Pro upgrade is too expensive.

    • +4

It's not like the old Windows 8 where Pro was better than Home, on Windows 10 they are pretty much the same and Pro only needed if joining the machine to a domain.

      • +2

Pro comes with Hyper-V which is nice if you're into that.

        • ?
          What is that ?

        • @Gimli:

Hypervisor support starting from Windows 8 onwards.
Lets you create bare metal Virtual machines.

        • That's true, I tend to use VirtualBox which is a similar Hypervisor but HyperV would be nice to have in the rare instance you need it for work.

  • Can I connect my Samsung SyncMaster PX2370 monitor to this or do I need to get some sort of accessory?

I can't seem to see a port for the DVI to D-Sub Cable (blue plug currently in my Dell and unsure where other cables may be) on this machine.

If so, would the "Lenovo Universal USB 3.0 to VGA/HDMI Adapter" or "Lenovo USB 3.0 to DVI/VGI Monitor Adapter" do the trick?

Or do I hunt around / buy a new cord to attach the monitor.

    • +2

Your monitor has a HDMI port. This laptop has a HDMI port. All you need is a $2 cable and it's good to go.

DVI (and especially D-Sub) is obsolete in 2017 (D-Sub (blue connector) has been dead for like 8 years haha).

      • +1

Thanks Brad. Very helpful, just what I needed to know.

      • +2

D-sub (analog) is outdated but still supported by most monitors as it still will run fullhd signals, so not obsolete just yet.
DVI supports more resolutions and refresh rates than hdmi and any hdmi output can be input into a dvi input.
        So Definitely not obsolete either.

        • I haven't seen a monitor or device with a d-sub port for bloody ages. Admittingly, I don't look, but the 4 monitors I've bought in the last 5 years haven't even had DVI, only HDMI and DisplayPort.

      • DualLink DVI is still better than HDMI if you are chasing high refresh rates but DisplayPort is the king.

  • Okay for a student laptop, but probably not the best choice.

Main downside is the weight.. I had the Lenovo E320, which if you guys remember is the 13.3 inch model of the Lenovo E-series.

Not sure why they stopped making 13 inch E series, as this smaller form factor would be more appreciated by students and business users alike.

    • +2

with fhd resolution the 14 and 15 " screens look ok with multiple apps open …..13" gets a bit small.

it depends on your priorities and how much time you spend benhind the screen and the apps you will run ….. at home you can plug it into larger monitor.

  • +1

bought this from the last deal, upgraded the RAM to 16GB, removed the shitty Windows, installed Ubuntu Mate, been working like a beast! a fricking heavy one.

  • +3

All these great ThinkPad deals, good price and specs. The only thing preventing me from making the purchase is the aesthetics of the laptop.

    • I hate control and Fn keys placement and no backlight keyboard but really like typing on IBM keyboards they sell now.

  • So close to getting one, but the weight is a turn off.

    • It's really not too bad. Can't notice much difference between it and my previous laptop, 14in Acer convertible laptop. It's not lightweight but none of these sort of laptops are.

    • +3

My wife said the same thing to me FML

  • +2

Do many comments on the weight. 1.87kg is quite light. What weights are we comparing to at a similar spec and price?

    • Xiaomi Air 13.

      • +2

xiaomi is very limited in expandability …… the e470 you can upgrade memory and storage.

        • Xaomi has another ram slot and another ssd slot. The new model that's coming out ( may have just been released) also offers more towards expand ability as well.

        • +1

@Kiato: the old model had a soldered ram. No idea about new.

    • +3

For the specs I agree. Don't forget that 1.85kg for a 14 inch laptop is what companies were calling ultrabook in 2013. I think 1.2/1.3kg is superlight now

    • 1.3kg can be found from Asus, Xiaomi and thinkpad T/X.

  • Bought, thanks!

  • How does this compare to last year's ThinkPad E460?

  • +4

no backlit keyboard is a deal breaker for me

  • +1

Pretty epic for the price especially buying within Australia.
The video card is pretty good for a far few games, but I'd probably wait until 1050's are 'standard' as there have been a few laptops that include these which are only a few hundred more. Gives it a bit more futureproofing considering this is the 1 part you can't upgrade yourself.

  • This is the same laptop I use for school however I have the i5 model. I would highly recommend it, it is fast and great value for money. I don't use it for gaming but it works well enough with fusion 360, Photoshop, illustrator and all that.

As @hogwarts said it is a bit heavy but really all that's in my backpack is the laptop, food and water so it isn't that bad.

  • Not bad

  • +4

Handles word in 1080p at 60fps. Occasional dips.

    • Doesn't come with word so not sure what you are on about.
Where did you find that bench mark anywyS.

      • Comes with a 30-day free trial

  • What is the screen on this like? Is it smooth good good for video editing?

  • Not bad, would be nice if they brought back the E570 deal which featured a 1050ti and i5-7300HQ for $1077. I missed out on that one unfortunately :/

  • +4

Typing from one of these laptops at the moment which I bought in around March. I regret the purchase, freezes up and overheats way too much. Battery barely lasts 2 hours. How do I claim the warranty for problems like this?

    • Was it the E470? What are the specs?

      • Yes, exact same specs except mine has 16 GBs RAM.

  • How would this compare to say a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 i5 256gb. Mainly used for university where the most demanding program is SolidWorks (3D CAD).

    • I'm an engineering student mate. You'll see better render time in Solidworks on this laptop but I personally think the note taking on the surface suits me better.

All depends on whether you have a desktop for your main CAD work. If you don't, get this laptop to suit both worlds.

  • +4

TA I'm holding out on a light(er) 15" T series Lenovo laptop under $1K. Mate, please make it happen!!!

  • What specs should I be looking at if I wanted to be able to run Matlab fast? And will this laptop be able to handle some heavy Matlab processing? Thanks

    • +1

      MATLAB? For engineering:
16GB ram or more (people running 8GB at times have problems with some stuff but 16GB is rare to have problems, and then they are easier to get past)
i7 (i5 is ok and you generally get more battery life so is worth considering) with two cores is fine unless you will heavily use parallel processing toolbox
      SSD

For other fields of science, not sure what specs.

      • Thanks g1 :)

  • I have this from last year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/240362 but it requires repairs of $900 to replace hinge, screen and the network cable. Just wondering are the repairs worth it, if not would this be a good replacement? Thanks

    • Did you drop it?

      • It rotates 360 and the hinges are thin and a point of failure on the device. A hinge popped out and I accidentally then closed it on the screen which led to a hairline crack and the connector cable severing.

Over the next few months because it didn't close properly eventually the other hinge broke and the crack became larger. There are no problems with the LCD but because they have to replace the glass and the hinges they have to replace the screen.

Hardrive works and OS boots up fine but I had to disable touch because the glass was pressing on it and also some of the keys were malfunctioning so had been using Bluetooth keyboard.

        • Damn, I remember I had a Dell Inspiron do that in the day - albeit 20 years ago :) I reckon $900 not worth it for repairs, better to sell on ebay for parts and get yourself something new with a warranty

    • Hell no

    • lol $900 for repair. is this a serious question. just buy a new one

      • But the old one has stickers on it…

  • If you're buying from the previous generation how does Bulldozer stack up against the Intel behemoth?

  • Looking for a travel friendly laptop that can do some light editing of drone videos..12"/13" and under $1k
    Anything tightarse?

    • macbook air on sale

      • Hmm I got a 12" MacBook already but find that HDD space and processor is an issue.. M chip

    • +1

Dude just get the E470. 14in is really not that big. Plus, the screen is nice and with 14in you can see way more than on 12/13. It's not particularly less travel-friendly than a 13in laptop. I have one and it's really good.

  • I bought the e460 that was on special last year. Biggest POS laptop I've ever had and my previous one was from ALDI.

Screen connection was faulty after 6 months. Sent back to get fixed.

It was always running slowly for some reason and then got much worse. Suspected faulty hard drive. Trying to get it fixed under warranty now.

    Wouldn't buy Lenovo ever so

    • I had minor build quality issues with my old lenovo too which is why I hesitate to buy lenovo again despite recent nominally nice deals.

  • Just FYI - service at home is covered under the standard warranty if you live in metros.

Have had to call on warranty recently and was advised by lenovo

Yet another laptop with NO optical drive. Deal breaker for me.

    • This is 14 inch size, if you need optical drive you will find it on 15.6 inch

      • My current 14 inch laptop has an optical drive. It sucks watching my dvds on the laptop having to use an external one. Thanks for the negs guys, but it really is a deal-breaker for me.

    • What's a optical drive?

  • +1

Price and specifications are great…but weighs 1.87Kg!

  • How does this compare with the ASUS UX330 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/312267)? Aside from the dedicated graphics card, what would this laptop be generally better at doing?

    • I wanna know this too
