"creates beams of sound by combining the sound projector’s many speaker groups via digital signal processing and reflects them off the walls of the room"
Do people actually fall for this rubbish?

I'm not saying this is what Yamaha are doing, but there's real science behind sound beaming, e.g. http://www.convexoptimization.com/TOOLS/ReviewParametricAcou…

It actually sounds unreal in my 4.5m x 3.5m media room. I've found myself looking over my should a few times at first, distracted by the sound seemingly coming from behind. Read up in the WP thread for opinions of others but I for one think it's excellent. It's also one of the top rated sound bars out there.

    • I understand your scepticism. However, in this instance, your comments are from a position of ignorance.

I've sat in a room with one of these units. That's EXACTLY what it does!

You can hear sound to the left, to the right, ahead and (not quite as effective) behind. So, yes, having actually sat in an enclosed room at a friend's house, I can confirm that once calibrated, they do work.

The unit I listened to was the newer model. I expect the effectiveness of the two units to be similar.

So… yes. I do believe it.

If somebody said Samsung's unit did the same (or many of the other cheap sound bars), I'd laugh. I listened to several units at various locations.

      • Totally agree that it's not so good at mimicking surround speakers but it's excellent doing the front and centre speakers. They're clearly distinguishable and I did the 5.1 Youtube demo video to test the setup and if I close my eyes and point to where I hear the source it's meters away from the soundbar.

I think there's merit in the argument a good 2.1 setup will outperform this, however the sound beaming works and a soundbar looks clean.

    • I've heard it and it's fair dinkum. Throws the sound around the room by bouncing off walls rather than using DSP to simply try to replicate surround sound.

Not as good as physical separate rear speakers but pretty damn good and way better than cheaper sound bars with DSP alone.

  • How's the bass on it? I bought one a little while ago but haven't had the chance to set it up yet

    • Fairly tight, adequate. I have a fairly high end subwoofer and this is no comparison. However, as an all in 1 box, the Yamaha is very good. It's also got Bluetooth support and you can stream songs from an Android device directly to the sound bar! It's a fantastic unit. I was dubious when I first heard about them.

Edit: the Bluetooth might be on the newer unit only (2700b)? Can anyone confirm.

      • I bought this from Bing Lee which has Bluetooth and afaik there is only one version that's been released of that model, b or s refers to black and silver. Happy to be corrected though.

        • This is 100% correct, this is the latest model

      • Even older 2500 had Bluetooth.

The 2700 has spotify app built in etc

        • Confirmed, this is the newest model and yep, b is for black

      • You can also stream directly from iTunes on pc/ mac or music app on apple /android

  • The thumbnail pic looks like a toothbrush from Minecraft.
