Samsung Gear VR 2017 (S8 compatible) available on Amazon for USD 89.92 + USD 12.71 shipping to Melbourne = USD 102.63 total (~AUD133.13).

According to camelcamelcamel the USD price seems to have been around USD89 since June 23rd but the weakness in the USD over the past week (AUDUSD=0.771 at time of posting) means this is the cheapest it's been on Amazon in AUD terms.

Note: Only the US version ships to Australia but as far as I can tell there is no difference between the US and International versions.

For comparison:
2016 version on Good Guys ebay with 15% off is $103.90 shipped but not compatible with S8
2017 version from Kogan is $159 shipped

  • they have what im assuming is the older model at officeworks on clearance for 68 dollars
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-ge…
just mentioned it because i saw one in stock…

not sure if the older model has the wireless controller
seems lower res and doesnt fit some of the newer phones?

    • Yes that's the 2016 series. I think the main difference is the 2017 comes with a "motion controller" remote but you can buy that individually and use it with the 2016 VR anyway.

  • So to confirm the 2016 version is compatible with the S8 right? No visual difference? Just the controller…

    • +1

No, according to reddit the S8 is slightly too big to fit in the 2016 VR. Another user said it fit but was not flat.

  • I've got a set that came with my S8, pretty much brand new. Pm me if anyone is interested.

  • What do these things actually do you for you? I've had mates who just use them for VR Pornography, but surely it's used for more than that?

      Bingo!

Seriously though, I don't know? I think you play games, watch 360 videos on youtube and watch porn from bad angles. I'm a nerd and work in IT so I try to keep up with new technology as in the long term my career depends on staying relatively up to date. What I don't want to happen is suddenly some new technology grows exponentially (e.g. iphones) and then my business is wiped out by some 17 year old making some fancy new widget in the latest technology. I'm also a tight arse which is why I'm on OzBargain and don't buy stuff when it's brand new.

P.S. Get an amazon echo, costs $300 but now I've had one a year I'd pay about $3k for it. In three years most people will have one or something similar. I've already bought 8 and gifted them to friends and family.

  • I'll wait till I can get it for $99 delivered just to try it out but by them maybe the vive or something else would be better and can be used for gaming

    • Yep. I think Microsoft HoloLens looks the most promising VR/AR but they seem to keep delaying when it will be released and I assume the first gen will be be $$$ and full of bugs- just like the first iphone.

  • I have one, but is there any way to get it working with my S6? The plug inside is a Type-C. It supposedly supports S6, but what about microUSB?
