Cheap price, but worth noting that this is last year's model with Intel's 6th generation Skylake processors. The current models are ~15% faster with potentially better battery life.

These machines are horrendous. They have so many hardware issues it's crazy. They are pretty though. Just thought I'd give my 2c in case anyone is on the fence.

    • What issues? I bought one for a staff member at work and they've reported zero issues in the past year.

We have a fleet of 100+ of these, and more than 50% (no exaggeration) have had to have hardware replaced (mainly motherboards) in the last year. Dell are good about getting them fixed up, but if I could go back, I would have gone with another model. Their Latitudes in the same price range are much better machines (albeit not as pretty).

Obviously it won't happen to all of them, but it's a very high rate of failure. Myself and others I've spoken to (including dell staff) attribute it to poor design leading to overheating.

Were they 100 from the same batch?
Surely the whole internet would be up in arms about it if 50% of all XPS13s had motherboard issues.

        • Thanks for the detailed response. Nice to know these things as I have a Dell Precision for work that is amazing so was looking at an XPS for home… maybe not now

        • @eug: The Internet is always up in arms. Google "dell xps problems" and you'll find plenty of complaints about the last couple of XPS models. Coil whine is a common complaint being discussed in the Dell community forums.

@toasty: You can google "<anything> problems" and you'll definitely find plenty of complaints.

The problem with that is, it only shows you the complaints. If 500,000 devices are sold, 5,000 have problems and 1,000 people post about it on the internet, anyone searching for "<device> problems" will see 1,000 people complaining but won't see the 495,000 people who have no issues.

What I'm saying is I doubt 50% of XPS13s sold have had motherboard problems. There can certainly be bad batches with a 50% failure rate, but 50% of their entire inventory is rather unlikely, especially for a popular model like that.

@eug: As I said, with 30 employees, we have gone through 64 in just over 1 year.

Yep on the same boat. We have 30 employees and in a year have gone through 64 of these guys. The mouse track pads seem to pop out, and the fans seem to die randomly. The track-pad response is so bad that I would never consider or recommend this to a friend. Has all been covered by warranty, but this is getting stupid.

More details of fraudulent doing on Whirlpool before they changed their name to cover up the bad feedback.

      • included in info, should i delete post?

  • FYI, I just purchased the new Kaby Lake XPS 13 from the Dell Factory Outlet. i5 7200U, 8gb, 256gb, FHD, for $1260.

    • have a link? any issues with it?

      • It's gone from the outlet but keep an eye out.

No problems, no coil wine. Even comes with Photoshop.

But I'm thinking of returning it as I feel I need something with a slightly larger screen. Might go for an X1 Carbon.

        • Nice i take it no scratches or dings?

Theres a bloke selling refurbished units that comes with a 1 year dell warranty. Not sure if i should take the plunge. (This spec works out to be $1189)

Do you think its worth jumping to an i7 qhd touch for $200?

        • @Daves88: personally I would hang out for a new unit. Mine was 'as new' and was unopened.

  • Need XPS 15 ! Any other recommendations? Gigabyte Aero 15? MSI stealth pro

If it has broadcom wifi module, ask Dell replace it with Intel module. Pinpointing took 2+ months!

Yes they replaced motherboard except the wifi module, then later I asked them replace the module and finally a major issue with random low power problem gone

  • would anyone purchase a refurbished unit with dell warranty?
