  • Isn't it cheaper to buy those 5m flexible strips of 5050 LEDs?

    • Marginally, you then have to solder on the leads.

    • You can also check out the more recent 5630 LED strips, they are 1.5x as bright as 5050 strips. I just bought some, nearly blinded myself plugging the bloody things in the first time. Get waterproof ones for more bump protection if used for vehicle ceilings etc.

Be careful though, some strips aren't completely electrically isolated by their backing strip. I stuck some to a metal plate last week and (luckily) tested them first with a multimeter and found a dead short. The copper strips inside the LED strip were both touching the metal at the back. Sticking them to a painted surface in a van should be fine though.

If you can't solder, buy these:

It says not for waterproof strips, but all you need to do is cut away a little of the waterproof coating beforehand. The connection will not be waterproof, but if it's going inside a vehicle that's OK. Then use normal screw terminals, bullet crimps, whatever to connect to the car's wiring.

A 5M strip of 5630s will draw 5-6 amps (depending on brand, temperature and cable length) so make sure you have adequate fuses and the correct switch to handle that power. You wouldn't need 5M in a van though, probably 1.5-2M.
