  • It's a good unit but I think today it's worth spending the extra for a unit with a remote head where the base it tucked out of site.

Particularly if it's going on your own vehicle. I don't think you'll have to much trouble finding the kit with a remote head for not much more money.

    • Agree that remote head is more ideal. There are some uniden units that have the remote mic and are similar priced to this GME however the uniden reviews haven't been so great. The next GME model up that has remote mic is about $100 more.

As I'm just starting out, though this would be a good starting point and will upgrade if I need to later down the track :)

      • I had a uniden 8060 remote head in my 2015 Pajero and in my new Hilux I have a GME 3550 remote head.

In my opinion the Uniden is a better unit both in terms of reception and clarity of sound.

Both these brands are at teh bottom end of the market so either is fine.

  • Looked at compact v remote head for the LandCruiser - went the $195 Oricom kit, which fits perfectly in the space where the ashtray once was. Half the price, and for something you're not using all the time, it works just as well as the Uniden in my mate's Patrol. The big difference IMHO in the UHF units is the aerial and mounting - having your $$$ remote head, with the extra installation time and maybe cost, will be negated to some extent by mounting a basic antenna on the bullbar…as opposed to high up on the roof.
