i'm usually between a S and M in terms of sizing but in the model the XS fits me just fine

    • Really? How tall are you? I have a similar jacket (getting a bit old now), different brand, but its a medium. Whereas, I am 6'2" (78kg) I thought I would be a large at least. So the toss up is, do I get a medium again or a small?

      • 6 foot 7kg i bought an XS perfect fitment

        • Same here but found small a better fit if wearing on top of a couple of layers. Depends on usage.

        • Super effective diet you're on! :P

      • im 175cm and 74kg, slim build

          Great! Thanks for the code.

        • +1

          Thanks for the code!

      • How was it stock wise? Thinking of heading in store tomorrow but worried they'll be no more stock for the colour/size :(

  • How small does this compress to and does it come with a compression sack?

    • +2

Yes comes with a sack, probably 15cm x 30cm roughly

  • +2

Have no experience with these. How does this compare to Uniqlo (Same price)?

    http://www.uniqlo.com/au/store/uld-jacket-1804130001.html

    • +4

I don't think it is comparable. I can tell you that I saw people using this macpac jacket at -15C.

      • Ah right, sounds like it is built for a completely different purpose then - thanks!

        • +7

they are doing the same job (insulation layer), they just offer different levels of insulation, for different levels of warmth.

the uniqlo ultralight down is intended to provide insulation in a very light and non-bulky form, while this macpac provides a higher level of warmth for colder conditions (but obviously heavier and bulkier).

Macpac also make thinner down jackets like the uniqlo ultralight, and uniqlo also make thicker down jackets like this macpac one. so you're just comparing the wrong jackets.

        • +1

          @caprimulgus:

I have this exact jacket and have been to very cold places with it. Compared the the uniqlo jacket this is much warmer.

I would not recommend this jacket (on its own) for -15c though. I'd say you are good with this and a cotton tshirt until about + 3 to 5.

With thermal tops and bottoms you could use this jacket down to -15c

This is a great jacket anyway.

Compressed size for an XL is about 15cm wide by 20cm long.
It can be compressed further though. The included compression sack isn't really a compression sack it's more of a storage case.

          Good deal. +1 from me

        • @che_97: I spoke with teh macpac reps in the store and its all about layering. esp with Melbourne's unpredictable weather, the 99 jacket is best and just add layers or thermals for extreme weather. plus its less bulkier!

        • @lifethroughthelens: My biggest regret with this jacket is that its never cold enough to wear it in Sydney and I'm always hot in it. This might be perfect for a cold Melbourne night.

        • @che_97: I think thats a good problem to have! haha.

        • @che_97:

what you mean is that YOU're never cold enough in Sydney. I have used this jacket in Sydney for years. It's perfect when it gets down to 5-9 degrees with layers underneath which is pretty common in winter.

    • +6

I have both, the Uniqlo one, and this one (Well the hooded version).
The Macpac one is a lot thicker/ insulated, much better for colder weather. The uniqlo one is thinner, still awesome but more urban i guess.

    • +3

I have a macpac down parka and tbh its too hot for melbourne. Its honestly just not that usable because its too warm even in cold unless you are just sitting still for a long time. I'd rather a cheaper one eg uniqlo.

      • +1

Works too well? Nice to know :)

  • bloody excellent deal!!

  • +1

If only it has hood I will buy.

  • good deal, got one for my dad last year and he loves it.

  • +3

Got one last time round, very warm, very comfy and can be compressed into a small bag which is ideal for travel. IMO for $100 it's an absolute no brainer.

  • Any models with a hood?

    • $150. Search for Halo Hooded on the site.

      Fuchsia women's one is $125.

  • +3

Will this jacket make me look like a nightclub bouncer?

    • More like Arnold Schwarzenegger

  • Many Thanks OP! Was waiting for a sale on this. Ordered one.

  • +2

Serious question; why do the arms look so long?

    • +2

Cause they've made the arms really long

      • +3

Think I will pass on the chimpanzee jacket then

    • +2

That's why I didn't buy it last time.

    • +1

I am also a little tiny Asian man. The arms of most clothes are too long for me but this one looks particularly long.

      • Lol my fingers would not even reach the end of those highway sleeves. I have not seen anybody with arms so prolonged like that though. Its a great price however, perhaps it could be altered.

    • +10

ha! ha! the tables have turned

i was the exact opposite trying to shop for a jacket in asia.

      me: *puts on jacket
me: jacket is clearly too small, up to my elbows
asian sales lady: it suits you sir.
      me: dull look
asian sales lady: if i had boyfriend i would buy for him
      me: goodbye

      • I don't usually laugh at things on the internet, but this made me giggle.

        • +1

tbh i'm not sure to this day whether she was trying to hit on me or sell me an ill-fitting jacket.

          whitepeopleproblemsinasia

        • +1

@insular: Score. You were so in mate… Well not literally but you know…. Giggity

        • @insular: Should've given her a tip. Just the tip though. Giggity.

        • @D6C1: well, i have the same problem with asian rubbers, so even literally, would've been dejavu.

        • @insular: #whynotboth :D

    • i dont think they are excessively long but they're designed for outdoor activities and factors in the reaching/stretching out of arms. The extra length means that your wrists will still remain protected at all times.
As for the sizing, its designed to be worn over base layers and mid layers. Going off the size chart, I am at the upper limit of medium measurements for chest and hip and lower limit for waist and that size works for me.

  • Code seems to be one time use only.

  • It does look good. I am torn between this or Uniqlo one which also is on sale today at the same price.

Uniqlo does seems to be more suitable for the mild Sydney winter. Macpac is more suitable for snow. Both very tempting.

    • Kathmandu one also same price. Can't decide as well

      • +2

Macpac is known for its quality, Kathmandu for the opposite.

    • Buy both, problem solved :)

    • Seems you won't really need this for mild Syd winters. But based on comments here if both are around the same price, Macpac might be more bang for the buck though.

  • +1

    Kathmandu link…

But appears better to go here

    • Tried on the women's Kathmandu Heli jacket in the store. It didn't fit good. A down jacket that actually looks good continues to elude me.

      • +2

These jackets are for humans, not Cookie Monsters.

  • are these shiny?

  • +4

Kathmandu from eBay is cheaper with CHAOS or COUPON20…

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kathmandu-Heli-Mens-Lightweight-D…

  • Is it made from Gore-tex?

    • i actually want this jacket.

  • Bought one last year for the same price - totally recommend it!

  • +1

I'm liking my $8 jacket from ozsale! Arrived today

  • Which is better the Kathmandu that DragonOz linked or this?

    • +1

think the macpac is better because its 600 loft down verses 550 for Kathmandu

    • +3

^fill power (loft rating) is only one aspect, it depends on the combination of fill power AND fill weight. I don't have the Kathmandu one, so can't tell you the fill weight, but given the listed total weight, I'd expect the fill weight of the macpac is greater too. So the macpac should be warmer.

      The other main differences are:
-Kathmandu has DWR coating (water resistant)
-Kathmandu has thinner baffles (more seams). That will reduce the warmth even more, and make it more susceptible to water (slightly offsetting the water resistance). The thicker baffles on the macpac also look way better to me, but that's personal preference.
      -Kathmandu also slightly lighter.

Those are the key differences. I have the macpac one, obviously (and also a few different uniqlo ones).

      • So is this macpac water resistant?

We went to Mt Baw Baw last year and it was drizzling for most of the day. The Uniqlo Ultra Light Down that a friend was wearing got her pretty wet. Wouldn't want to be in his shoes.

        • +1

No the macpac is not water resistant (hence why I listed it as a difference).

How old was her uniqlo ultralight? The old ones were not water resistant, but the new ones are.

Either way, note that water resistant is not the same as waterproof, so even if you choose the Kathmandu one, you shouldn't rely on the water resistance as your only rain protection! Think of it more as emergency protection, particularly for really light drizzle / spitting.

Also, note that water will get through the seams, hence why I said that thinner baffles / more lines will make it more susceptible to water.

        • @caprimulgus: Thanks. I did notice that you listed DWR Coating for Water Resistance. That's what got me curious enough to ask if the Macpac has some form of water resistance to it. I somehow have this notion that down jackets are water resistant by default based on how they look. ^_^

Not really sure how old her uniqlo was, though I reckon it's about 2+ yrs old as of last year.

          Thanks!

  • I literally JUST bought this jacket last Friday noooooooo

    • You could try and "return it" and "buy again" if you ask them? Or maybe do a price protection claim if you bought on a credit card that has it enabled?

  • I've got the MacPac. It does a great job but as others have warned, the sizes do run larger than normal. Mine is too big for me. Comfortable and puffy, but too big.

The Kathmandu that was linked to I'll be snapping up, cheers for the link.

  • +6

You can also use the code EXTRA10 for extra 10% in case the code EXPLORE did not work.

  • This looks quite promising but sizing seems to be an issue. If anyone can share their height/weight and what size they got it would be great. I'm 175cm at 75kg and thinking about a XS or S.

    • +1

just order whatever and change it at a store later if it doesn't fit. Or better still just go to the store and buy it

    • I've got a small one (hooded). 166cm and 70Kg.

    • I'm 177cm and about 76kg and I ordered a S

    • 180 cm and 84kg, ordered a small and fits me just fine

    • Ended up going to the store myself to try, small was the best fit

  • Will this make me look like Sy Feltz?

    • You will need to grow a large mustache.

  • +2

Add $11 item for free shipping

  • I'm 6ft 1" with a slight enough build and I'm wearing a Small size version of this jacket. I'm normally a Large and it was swimming on me.
If you are my height but chunky, maybe try a Medium.
I bought 2 initially online. Large and Medium. Returned both to the shop and got a small plus a refund for the other. Pretty handy.
Edit: Forgot to say I love this jacket. Especially on cold Melbourne mornings (like today).

  • No PayPal option on checkout ? Bummer…

  • Not knowing much about the quality of these compared to Kathmandu, is there much of a difference in quality between the two?

Only looking at wearing in Sydney 90% of the time.

    • Honestly Sydney winters are too mild for this jacket. (Bought this last year and have only worn it once in Sydney.)

      • Ok great. I was thinking it would be too. Will go with the Kathmandu or Uniqlo option. I'd say either of those will be better suited to Sydney.

        • +1

Ah, each to their own though, my wife wears her Halo down jacket in Sydney all the time. :(

      • +1

I work in Chatswood and it's perfect. Gets pretty chilly up here

    • I have this jacket and tried Kathmandu one as well. Macpac is so much better i felt. Kathmandu one sure is inferior to this.

  • Made my order last night and dispatched this morning :)

  • I'm about 170cm, 75kg.
Tossing up between XS and S.
    I usually wear M though.
    Any suggestions?

    • +1

I'm 6'1 and usually wear a large. Just bought the M in store.. sleeves are long but the bunch up. If you normally wear medium, I'd probably suggest the S. If you go XS, it may ride up a bit and show your belly button haha.. thats what happened when I tried the S.

      • +1

How do you know about my belly? :( lol
Ok thanks, I'll go with the S!
