    • I'm 174cm and 85kg. Went to the store to try them on this afternoon.
The S fit snugly, but decided to go for the M as I plan to layer underneath it in USA / Canada this Xmas.

  • I've been wearing this recently. I bought it last year. Cannot feel the cold at all with it on.

Oh crap, i might have to go to one of their stores to confirm what size fat bastard is.

    • Haha don't be so angry cluck cluck

  • Little Bourke St Melbourne has heaps of BLACK and GREEN and LIGHT BLUE… I bought the last medium one in GREY.
Bought in store, they didn't let me use the discount code. Oh well.. got to try it on, luckily, as I ended up going Medium, thinking i'd be large.. plus, I need it for this weekend.

  • im still loving $60 jackets i got from rays outdoors yonks ago.

would never shop there again, but i got a few bargains.

  • Wondering - is it worth it to get the hooded version for $143.99 (no shipping cost)?

  • Just got one in store - awesome jacket for the price!

  • Hmm, both codes aren't working for me =S
    ah well, still good prices…

Tried again after inputting the postage details and the codes worked!

    Great prices!

    Thanks op for posting!

  • The size runs large with really long sleeves, I'm usually a XL, but M fits me well. Suggest to try out in store. Great deal!

    • +1

Maybe the do it on purpose so you can keep your hands warm, 90s high school style?

  • Just went to try size in store. Was expecting to need Medium but nope needed a small! Everyone was not kidding about smaller sizing.
Mentioned the discount to see if they would match and she kind of read off a screen (company email maybe) that it was "made up by ozbargain and not a sanctioned code."
That's fine except it works so I left and ordered on my phone as I walked out the store.
If the staff know about the discount and it's not "sanctioned" then why didn't they disable it?
They better not cancel my order!!

    • Wouldn't it be same price to buy in store though? Given the code only gives you free postage? Or were you buying multiple

      • Buying two (one for me, one for wife) so free postage anyway online.
Using the EXTRA10 got $20 off.

Found a stupid bug in Macpac's Check Out system. Apparently it doesn't like addresses that has the word Box on it.

"Sorry! We can't ship to PO box addresses. Please provide a physical address."

    Hilariously stupid.

Changing the Box to Bax works but I wonder if that will pose an issue with the Postie

It's not a bug, it's a business decision. Their customer service will probably end up emailing/calling you for a physical address or they might cancel your order.

      • one would assume he's not trying to send it to a POBox, rather his HOME address has the word box in it

        • -1

          Oh… My bad. Didn't read it properly. I'm not a detective! :(

Still not a bug, a poorly written rule in their system.

        • +1

@John Kimble: Reminds me of that classic tug-of-war we in the Software Development Team had with the Business Analysts / Users.

          Them: It's a bug!
Us: Ugh. It's a feature, not a bug.

Anyway, whoever made this has a well-intended feature in mind, but had an ugly side effect. As such it's classified as a bug.

        • Yes.

          I wish they either:

          • Remove the validation as a whole
          • Or like what other websites are doing (Optus comes to mind), make use of an address validation system
        • @John Kimble: Ah… Definitely a bug by the sounds of it.
I'm backing this up with a dozen years in Software Development & QA.

        • @AncientWisdom: I guess by definition it can be called a bug from your perspective. In my industry (fraud/risk) it is called a false positive.

          Potatoes, potartoes!

        • +1

@John Kimble: Haha fair enough! A validation firing up incorrectly (indeed false positive) is actually kind of a classical scenario bug. If you think about it the consequences for the business could be meaningful i.e. loss of business.
And all it really is is lazy coding or not paying attention. As Jax Santiago mentioned the best solution is a reliable external address validation system. It might have its own problems but at least its a central system, meaning the problems can get addressed in a single place (instead of each developer and their mother coming up with their own address validation).

        • +1

          @John Kimble:

          i.e. a bug

        • @AncientWisdom: I don't think it makes a difference to the discussion, but my guess is it's not and address validation system, but a fraud prevention system.

  • Looks like the codes aren't valid anymore. Used to work last night (damn Box address problem).

  • -1

Codes not working for me either, and i'm putting in address details.
Not only that a colour has disappeared.

    Not happy Jan.

I just went into the macpac store in Melbourne CBD (little bourke st). Lots of people taking advantage of the sales. I recommend checking the stock levels on the macpac website before u go in, as they have limited sizing left. Also go in person and try them on, as you can find the right fit and won't be disappointed - it'll save you time in the long run and postage costs.

I'm a guy and I tried on the XS mens halo down jacket (99.99 marked down from 275.00) and like other ozbargainers have said, the sizing is on the generous side (eg the arm length etc). So I ended up getting a ladies size 10. I tried it on still wearing my jumper and some other layers, otherwise if its too fitted, then you will feel stuffed. So I recommend trying on the jackets with layers and allowing some give, esp with arm movement.

With the genders, usually with womens fashion cuts they can be a bit 'hippy' and flared out, but the macpac one is good as it appear unisex. So if you're a smaller gent after smaller sizing, or a lady wanting bigger sizing, then both male and female varieties will suit.

I asked the attendant about water repellancy and they said the jacket is not water proof or water repellant, but that you can buy or wear a spray jacket or also buy a chemical which treats the down and jacket to make it waterproof. For $100 its a great deal.

I recommend going to the melbourne cd macpac store, as around the store are all this store are all the other adevnture wear stores, etg paddy palin, adventure mountain designs and then around the corner is the two level Kathmandu (I understand Kathmandu also have a sale but I think the macpac deal beats it with quality and price.

They also have the down vests for around $90 which are on sale and have a great fit too. I put one on hold.

I recommend going in as I can see the cheap down jackets are getting the volumes of people in - and i'm not sure when the sale ends.

  • Codes do not work.

For anyone comparing the different down jackets on sale:
-Uniqlo Ultralight (water resistant coating): 67g/73g/78g (90% down, unknown fill power)
-Kathmandu Heli (water resistant coating): 108g/114g/119g (80% down, 550 fill power)
-Macpac Halo (NOT water resistant): 205g (80% down, 600 fill power)

Specs are for men's M/L/XL sizes, except Macpac which I've listed M only. Due to macpac sizes running very large, the Macpac M should probably be compared to L (or perhaps even XL) in the other brands.

In any case, the specs give you a rough idea of the level of insulation (warmth) each jacket provides.

The Kathmandu feels like a slightly thicker and warmer version of the uniqlo. I would class them both as thin and light down jackets. Good for layering, or for more moderate weather. They are great for light and packable casual warmth, particularly for a backup / emergency you can carry in your bag/pocket. And they both provide a (very light) level of water resistance (DWR costing only) - a little bonus feature that is helpful in a pinch in very light rain / spitting (but should NOT be relied upon for proper rain protection!).

The Macpac is on a complete other level - way more fill (weight), as well as being slightly higher fill power (meaning a higher loft/warmth for the same fill weight, and also packs down to a slightly smaller size for the same fill weight). It is a substantially thicker jacket, providing much more warmth, being suitable for far colder conditions. It provides a serious level of insulation in comparison to the others, while still being quite packable (not as small though - won't fit in a large pocket like the uniqlo can!). It is a more "serious" jacket, hence why they don't bother with water resistant coating (ie. you should have a proper rain jacket), and probably why sizing runs very large (meant for wearing over other clothes in really cold weather).

Which one is "better"? Well that depends entirely on your needs, and what you are looking for.

If you want the warmest jacket for the price, then the Macpac wins hands down. No question.

If you want something lightweight that provides a small amount of insulation for more moderate weather, and packs down to the smallest size, that would be the Uniqlo (with bonus water resistance from very light rain/spitting).

If you want something a little bit inbetween (closer to the uniqlo, but a bit warmer), then I'd go for the Kathmandu (again, with light water resistance as a bonus).

Hope that is helpful for some people looking at the various jackets!

(FYI, I personally have the Macpac Halo and multiple different Uniqlo down jackets, including the ultralight down jacket, ultralight down vest, seamless down coat, and 3-in-1 down jacket. I wear them all, in different circumstances, and would recommend them all for different purposes!)

    • ^Forgot to mention, the weight in grams that I listed is the down fill weight (not total weight of the jacket). Fill weight and fill power together determines the warmth of the jacket.

Yeah checked out both the Kathmandu & Macpac yesterday in real life.
      The Kathmandu was underwhelming.
The Macpac was fine - 3XL was pretty massive, but if you've got a lot of crap underneath you'll need your full size IMO despite what else has been said above.

Didn't buy either though - i've got a couple of the $50 Aldi ones, which are a little on the small side, but i'll wreck them first before buying yet another…

    • I compared the uniqlo and kathmandu ultralight down jackets today because I already have a thicker one from kathmandu (like the macpac) and it's served its job perfectly.

As far as ultralight down is concerned, and assuming the kathmandu is marked down to $100, it is worth buying over uniqlo's - it felt a bit thicker to the touch which in my head translates to a more durable jacket.

    • I got one from last year. its its said on the instruction that Only non detergent pure soap.Do tou know where should I look for? Thanks for your time

      • +1

Outdoor shops sell down-wash, usually in a liquid which is what I bought to do my down sleeping bags.

There likely a few different pure soap products and Lux springs to mind as one I remember someone saying they used for their jackets.

        https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/ProductDetails/196149/lux…

        • Can I use for the wool detergent?

        • +1

          @ylangylang55:
Apologies, I'm not sure what your asking.

I believe the Lux is pure soap.

If your not 100% sure about what you should be using, talk to the retailer or manufacturer.

Your wanting to know if you can use it to wash wool?

I believe so, but you should confirm by reading the box.

I didn't use Lux as I used Grangers downwash from my local outdoor store to wash my down sleeping bags and down vest.

I've left this link so you know exactly what I bought (but not from the link)

          https://grangers.co.uk/products/down-wash

Might the reviews for Lux soap answer any of your questions?

Coupon codes not working, decided not to buy.

    • +1

Oh yeah, that was another factor for me.
It's just too big a psychological barrier for me to break through, when i know i could have bought it cheaper just the day before.

Give me strength next time Lord.

      • can always go to a store… it would be the same price :)

  • Looks like the sale for the Halo jacket is over. It's back to $139 as part of their 50% off jackets sale. I bought mine on Friday for $99 and was just about to order one for my wife online.

  • Had a chance to try mine today, about 12 degrees outside, had it with just a T under and I was toasty! Very happy with it!
