Hmm should I break my k100d out of retirement?
If you have the K100D (not K100D Super),
it will not drive the focusing of lenses with SDM or HSM.

I did a bit of searching. Apparently it doesn't stop auto focusing using the body. It just can't take advantage of SDM features. Is that right?
The SDM IS the focusing motor. K100d does not have the contacts on the camera for lenses with SDM thats why it cannot drive the focusing on those lenses

Most lenses these days have SDM/HSM (sigma)Some Pentax SDM lenses still support screw drive autofocus from the body but apparently the 17-70 is SDM only. If you're likely to upgrade your camera body in future and don't mind manual focus for now it could be worth it, but if not then stick with the ones that support screw drive focus.

I recently bought one for $640 delivered, but it's greystock (from HK).
PENTAX DA 17-70mm is a pretty average lens. :(
It's also been $199 for ages. Claiming it's marked down from $599 is a little misleading. CR Kennedy ship quickly though, just a pity Pentax doesn't market itself and price a bit more aggressively.
