    Not sgp311 it's actually SGP611A1W.

    • Thanks, Fixed.

  • +17

Neg me if I am wrong, but is $299 not a high price for a 3 year old 16GB Android Tablet?

They do not stand up as well as iPads (and this is coming from someone that doesn't like iOS) and the specs are somewhat old.

    Granted it has LTE.

    • +5

      Granted it has LTE.

It's a WiFi model, no LTE.

      • +8

Was just about to mention this.

Also, I think I paid $330 over 2 years ago, it has since dropped below $300 multiple times.

        I don't think it's a bargain at this price.

Having said that, mine is still running really well, it feels snappy (I have a pixel xl which doesn't seem any faster in day to day use), and with a large micro SD card in it, it is a great portable media player (the stereo speakers are decent too).

$200 would be a more fitting price this far from it's release.

Probably worth noting, no more official os updates from Sony for this.

      • Oops. I saw the specs above and thought it had. This is definitely not a bargain then.

  • +6

Mine's still going strong from the same deal last year, fantastic tablet!

    • Yeah, but no longer getting updates and starting to show its age. I have one myself (and had a Z3C, and now have a Z5) and yeah, while it was great, I wouldn't buy one today.

  • +10

IMHO ridiculous price for that old bone

    • +4

Please point us in the right direction for something of better value. While it is a 2014 tablet it was the flagship at the time… and i simply cant see anything better for the price

      • Buy some Chinese unit if nothing else. Plenty to chose for that money. 3 tears old technology on a tablet is simply outdated

        • +1

This tablet would easily keep up with newer Chinese android tablets at the price point and have FAR better build quality and screen (inc. being waterproof). There are better 8 inch tablets out now yes, but you'll be paying a lot more than $299 for them.

        • Lineage support keeps older gear alive and Chinese tablets simply don't cut the mustard. My LG GPad 8.3 runs 7.1.2 like a dream.

        • Your comparing grey market to local stock 2 years warranty and ACL vs no warranty or very dodgy service….

The specs of this tablet are still very hard to beat at this price, unless if u can find me a similarly specced tablet in this price range.

          Heres a hint… you cant.

      • Not sure how it compares but there's the Acer Iconia One 10.1" Tablet for $245 + shipping @ Kogan: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/acer-iconia-one-10-b3-a30-table…

  • This has a sim right? Can this actually take calls?

    • +1

This model does not have a SIM card slot.

  • +1

If you've got $300 to spend on a tablet I'm sure you can find something newer and better

    • Agreed. I bought a Z3 Tablet recently. Worst tablet I've had so far.
Wireless AC/N unreliable, SD read speeds well below acceptable levels and battery drain issues. Sony support is near non existent in Australia.
Cheaper, better options out there and cheaper I am certain.

      • I haven't had any wifi issues in the two years I've had mine.

The read/write speeds are ok for most purposes. Using A1 SD bench I get 16mb/ write and 18mb/s read (with a SanDisk Ultra 64gb microSD)

        No battery drain issues either.

I can't comment on Sony's support because I've never used it.

I think it's a great tablet, just not at this price.

        • you need to look closer at the wifi not just use it in one specific situation. The wifi gets confused if you get within close proximity of a secondary N or AC routers and it then drops back to 2.4 if you have one configured and if not it fails to reconnect. Most ordinary users won't understand what his happening as the problems are complex. I logged a detail case with steps to reproduce with Sony well over 6 months ago and no fix forthcoming and probably never will be one.

Those speeds are terrible for a device of this price. You should get 40+ mb/s both directions now days with a decent memory card. Even the old Z1's could do this. (the interface was rated at aout 45mb/s.)

Battery issues are tied to OS version. If your on an older build likely it will be better. Recommend not upgrading the OS. This issues will get significantly worse with time.

Camera also sub-stony standard, forgot to mention that.

Sony support is handled by a dodgy third party, fonebiz or something like that, their bad reputation proceeds them. Local sony support know very little about the Z3's and will send you to the third party at the first sign of any question more complex than, how do I turn it on, if you get what I mean. Not like the US that have people trained, but if you guy it here you have to deal with the local level 1 support.
I hope you never have to go to support. This will turn you off Sony for life.

All our devices were sony up until recently, three un-repaired major faults on three different sony devices will do that to you. Starting to shop around for options now for our next devices.

I had one of these. From memory there was some sort of issue that made it difficult to install apps in sd memory. Sold it because the 16gb was too limiting

        • I'm sure that was an Android OS issue, that has been addressed in later versions. But they do not state what version is installed.

        • +1

          @Rumbaar:

This can be updated to Android 6.x (it's probably running 5.0)

1: Sony chose not to allow microsd cards to be formatted as internal storage because of limited read/write speeds. (So you can't install apps to the SD card)

2: if you upgrade to Android 6.0, you lose the ability to connect wirelessly to a dualshock 3 controller without root. You gain the ability to connect a ds4 though.

    • I think most manufacturers have stopped making new android tablets (especially at this size)… only ones at this size better than the Z3 Compact are probably Huawei Media Pad M3, Asus Zenpad 3S 8.0 and Xiaomi Mipad 3 which are all priced higher.

    • In the 8 inch catagory for the 300 dollar price range good luck even getting fhd screen.

Its old bit holding its value. Look at the s5, that for some reasons holds its value high as well.

  • +1

While this is a great product it is quite an old tablet now and I'm pretty sure this has been below 300 a number of times so not a great deal sorry OP

  • +1

I use this in my car for navigation because phones are illegal.

It actually works tethered to my phone so well it's amazing.

    • how did you mount it? teach me, I bought one last year ~

      • Mount it with a CD slot mount I assume.

      • I use the SM617 - Arkon Slim-Grip ULTRA Robust Base Windshield Mount

Got it off ebay for $34.92 and I'm really happy with it

    • Phones are illegal for nav???

      • +1

For L and P platers yes, not for full license though.
Edit: In NSW anyway, dunno about other states

      • +1

According to my interpretation of the Victorian Regulations:

        • Driver must not be a P or L plater
        • Phone must be mounted to the vehicle
        • Phone may only be used for: voice calls, audio playing, navigation. i.e. no texting, video calls or other functions are allowed.
        • Phone must be used without touching it at all.
        • Exemptions for police and Emergency services (of course!).

I highlighted the no touching rule, because I think that's the one most of us are guilty of breaking. However, I just got a new car with android auto - yay, so I'm all good now.

  • +3

Everyone says there are better specced tablets for the price… anyone actually find one. (Im actually interested)

Had a look and cant really see anything with the resolution, ram and cpu

  • Also processor listed as 2.5 ghz not 1.5 ghz

  • Sony seems to have a high opinion of their tablets, the relatively old Z5 10" goes for around $800 new online when similar devices are less than half that price.

  • +1

    Ahhh typical ozbb response.

I was about to buy this.

And then I realised I bought one already ages ago and gave it to my dad.

I would assume updates on this thing has long ended.

  • Not a great price, it was this much or less last year and the hardware is getting old. If it had 4G/LTE, then it might be alright.

Don't get me wrong, I have two of these, and they have been solid, especially with the firmware updates. I use mine everyday. Great little tablets, but considering its age, it should be <$200 on clearance. Neg from me.

    • +2

'Should be' is not a great reason to neg the deal, unless you can find it cheaper?

      • +4

Agreed… cant find any local stock tablets with similar specs and price

      • +2

I'm saying it would need to be lower for it to be considered a bargain as previous deals had been cheaper, hence neg. Obviously it's personal opinion on how much it's worth right now to me, considering I have 2 already.

If "you can find it cheaper NOW" is a requirement for neg votes, please remove my neg.

  • I hate when manufacturers do this… can anyone locate the years of warranty for this device. I sure as hell can't

    • +1

One year from memory, but they are built pretty solid. No problem from my 3 yr ownership. But you'll have to be super careful of the waterproofing port covers. I use a magnetic charger dock to get around that.

      • Called sony was told all mobiles and tablets aussie stock come with 2 years warranty

      • Do you have a link for the magnetic charger dock?
Do you use a case? I can only find those cheap chinese bulky folio type.

        • +1

I use the sony case and dock for the tablet. The case would be super hard to find, if not impossible now. Docks are still floating around I think.

    • +1

Pray you don't need it. Dealing with fonebiz (Sony's au warranty repair joint) is the most painful thing that can be done. I will never buy Sony again after having to suffer through fonebiz service.

      • +1

same here. I cannot understand what has happened to Sony. The company once was my go to company happy to pay the premium but now slipping behind or possibly much worse than Samsung or LG. I'm now willing to go no-name as gamble on throwing it away rather than dealing with the likes of fonebiz.

    • Found out all aussie stock mobiles & tablets = 2 years warranty

  • +4

Got one of these in black last October, I think it was 278 delivered including noise cancelling headphones. It's been great, no problems anywhere. And its waterproof, can't say I would ever use it underwater, but lets me OzB in the bath with confidence.

    • U keep it under running water in the shower? Or just in the bathroom listening to music?

      • +2

No, I use it when I'm actually having a bath. Wet hands and splashes don't worry it. Just have to keep the micro usb cover on tight. Love a nice long bath.

  • +2

Be careful that you might get refurbished or returned item when you buy this from their online store

    • I did read this… however its generally the case you would get a refurb or repaired at their will

  • +2

Bought one of these back in Oct 2015 for $339. Still going strong.

One thing to note, decent cases/covers for these can be extremely hard to find.

    • watchout of the ebay ones. Covers go over the magnetic charger! I tried several all the same problem. Any recommendations that don't cover ports or make it impossible to stand the tablet up would be good.

      • This is the case I ended up with: https://www.amazon.ca/Xperia-Compact-Tablet-Cover-Feature/dp… but bought from US Amazon seller who shipped to Australia. The guys in this link don't unfortunately. It covers the magnetic charger, so you have to charge with the case open. Viewing angles are good though, and I'm happy with it. I hope you find somewhere that sells it and ships here.

DO NOT buy a MOKO brand case. The plastic corners break after a while.
