I don't get this at all, I've both got this phone and massive hands (size 14 feet) and even I struggle to reach the top left corner in one handed operation.
So if my screen was bigger, this issue would be exasperated and I'd have to use two hands most of the time, which would suck.
      But each to their own.

      • -2

Sounds like you need to look into PieControls, I recommend LMT. Will change the way you view larger (not miniature imo) phones.

        • +7

I tried it for a couple of days and absolutely hated it. Plus I just don't see the need for a bigger screen either. It uses more battery, is harder to fit in your pocket, breaks more easily, etc.
Yes on the rare occasion when I watch HD videos on my phone, it'd be nice to have a bigger screen, but the trade off isn't worth it for me, at least while my eyes are still good enough to for this miniscule 5.15“ screen.

        • +1

          @spludgey:

          It uses more battery

but bigger phones = more space for larger batteries.

Larger phones almost always have better battery life.

        • +3

          @PainToad:
Yes, fair enough. I wish they just made the phone 2mm thicker though and increased battery capacity that way.
I guess I'll just have to live with never having what I'd consider to be the "perfect phone".

        • @spludgey:

          Them modern life problems :)

        • @PainToad: not always the case. 3000mah was pretty common for 2016 phones.

        • @spludgey:
.. so .. is this a good deal??? .. or not a good deal??? .. for what it is..

      • You know what they say about people with big hands…

        • I don't. What do they say?

        • +7

@lostn: it's hard to find gloves that fit?

        • Yes… People with big hands also have big feet.

        • @ms:
          Anything else?

        • +6

          @chutibuti:

Yes… People with big hands clap louder than people with small hands.

        • @lostn:

          What do they say?

Hands can't talk. So they say nothing.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: I'm sure we can find you some cheap ones on ozbargain!

      • +1

I think you misunderstood. They said "Shame about the tinny screen" - Maybe there's too much tin in the screen for their liking?

  • +5

    No band 28.

    • -1

      or 850Mhz.

      so fairly pointless for 4g.
But on the good side yur battery life will be great.

      • +2

From my understanding after reading the below info is that it does support B5, or 850Mhz.

        FDD-LTE: B1 / B3 / B5 / B7
        TD-LTE: B38 / B39 / B40 / B41
        TD-SCDMA: 1900 / 2000MHz
        WCDMA: 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100MHz
        GSM: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz

        • +3

yep if that's the correct specs then i does cover Voda.

I was going off the Op

          4G: FDD-LTE 1800/2100/2600MHz

        • +2

@supabrudda: My OH has this phone on Optus and I'm pretty sure she's getting 4G.
Will have to check this evening if she is.

Haven't heard her complain about reception or poor performance browsing the web outside of WiFi yet.

        • +1

@Deviner: I've tested Voda and Telstra personally. Voda in Adelaide. Telstra in Adelaide, Sydney, Melboune and Tasmania. Never had an issue with either. I'm rarely without 4G but I'm also hardly ever out of the metro area.

A mate of mine who bought one based on my recommendation is on an old Optus plan has told me he hardly ever sees anything other than 4G either.

        • +2

@matt0: Yeah we're in Perth and Optus coverage is great for metro and even a bit out of the metro area.

A lot of people freak out about B28, and even discount particular phones because of it, and they may not even notice a difference!

The only thing I've heard the missus complain about is the loudspeaker - apparently it's really difficult to hear her whenever she uses loudspeaker.
Apparently her car doesn't always pick up her phone's bluetooth so she regularly has to use loudspeaker in the car and it's admittedly very difficult to hear her as there may be an issue with the microphone when set to loudspeaker.

        • FDD-LTE: B1 / B3 / B5 / B7

Where did you get that? Even on Gearbest's specs it says

          2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
          3G: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz
          4G: FDD-LTE 1800/2100/2600MHz

        • +3

@Deviner: I will say the loudspeaker isn't super loud, but it's always been fine for me. One of our cars has bluetooth and my phone connects automatically to the system every time (Toyota). Our other car is a bit older so I've got a phone cradle and use an app called 'Drivemode' which reads out text etc. If I answer a call I have to mute the car stereo to hear from the loudspeaker but that makes sense to me.

Could not be more impressed. I've really thrashed this phone and it's taken all the punishment. I've had it accidentally buried in sand on a beach in Mykonos (friend had to call it so I could find it), dropped it on a glacier in Iceland when trying to take a photo with frozen hands haha! Got caught in a storm in London and got drenched, shook the water off and gave it some hair dryer treatment at the hotel and it's sweet. And many more incidents it's gone through. I've replaced the glass screen protector once from damage but other than that, bulletproof phone.

Some of the photo's I took travelling Europe (was the only camera I took with me) came out amazing too.

I was using a Google Nexus 4 before I upgraded to the Mi5 pro. Mines the 128gb storage, 4gb RAM version.

        • +3

          @matt0:

a beach in Mykonos…a glacier in Iceland…a storm in London

No matter how far or how wide you roam, you still call Australia home.

    • This was such a disappointment, when I bought mine, I figured what the hell it's only one band how important can it be on Telstra…..

      The answer is very.

      • -1

Lots of misconception about B28 is spread on here, probably clowns on Lebara sims who are content with 3G speeds.
I think some of the CN phones are great for the price (I've had one myself) but no B28 should immediately take it out of consideration if you are with a provider that operates on that frequency.

      • +5

I can only assume you live away from a built up area. I've had my Mi5 for a year now, also got 2 of my mates onto it and also my Dad. None of us have had a single problem with 4G coverage or coverage in general or performance of the phone. I personally have tested Vodafone and Telstra and my mate is on an old Optus plan. I've used the phone in Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania and Adelaide over the past year hardly ever without 4G. I was a bit nervous when I bought the phone about the lack of bands but It's simply not been an issue.

I even travelled through Europe with a Voda Netherlands sim for 3 months and the Mi5 out performed a Sam S7 that one of the people I was travelling with had. He was only getting H+ in 95% of the countries while I had 4G everywhere.

        • +1

Lets, for a second, assume that you could only get 3G (which is not true for the majority of people), I doubt your average Joe could tell the difference.

Do the likes of Facebook and Youtube etc actually max out a 4G connection?
Between traffic congestion and I'd say most apps throttle speeds as well.

I doubt most people could even tell the difference between a strong 3G connection and 4G in day to day usage!

        • +1

@Deviner: Actually you can squeeze a few hours extra battery life of most phones by turning off 4G.

        • +2

          @Deviner:

True. But for me and those millions who live a bit or far from major city suburbs, often if we don't get B28 we will also not get much/strong 3G as well. So B28 can be crucial for those outer regional/country areas. People just need to test network where they need and stop Polarising their personal experience.
Australia is a Vast Country/continent lol.

        • @ozhunter68: Fair call. If you're outer metro unfortunately your options are more limited and I'd hesitate to recommend this phone for you. There are other decent Chinese phones that do support all the Aust network bands though that are worth looking at.

        • @matt0:

Yep. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Kate Edition was a good phone for covering all Aussy bands, now waiting for the Note 4 Kate Edition in Black 4G/64GB for under $250 odd ( delivered of course ) lol.

Can you recommend a decent Chinese phone with all Aussy 3G/4G bands under $250?

    • +1

this is why i didnt get a xiaomi to replace my broken phone (sony z3c w/b28). b28 was a thing that seemed like it might matter and better not risk getting a new phone with a noticeable flaw

i looked at many other phones, bought a few and wasnt happy with any of them because they were all big and expensive. ended up finding cheap iphone se on ebay and wanted to try the small size, but the lying seller didnt say it was usa model. this was before a trip so by now it was too late to get a xiaomi anyway

so i ended up with a phone with no b28 after trying to avoid exactly that.
but hey it barely matters. havent noticed a difference. the only time i could think it might be noticeable is in the countryside, and only if you are on telstra

    • +2

No worthwhile china phone has band 28. I don't see the fuss about it. Every deal regarding a mobile is about band 28. If people really want that band stick to your tier one device manufacturers

  • -3

I'd personally get the zuk2 at this price.

    • How come? UI? Screen?

Most of the hardware is pretty similar.

    • just curious, what ROM are you using?

    • +2

Sorry, but no. Zuk 2 is great, but that screen is ugly, and the camera is worse.

Zuk 2 used to be cheaper than the mi5 by 100 bucks. Nowadays, 30-40 only.

    • +1

One word. Or actually 3. UFS

  • +6

Great phone after the annoying unlocking processes and removing MIUI.

    • +2

i find miui quite nice, what rom would you use in place and why?

      • +7

Lineage OS, because its very close to a stock Android and has regular security updates.
I think MIUI is an acquired taste, People from IOS or Samsung seem to like it, but if you have had the Vanilla Nexus/Pixel experience then MIUI is pretty different, also has non removable bloat apps etc. However the current downside of flashing 3rd party ROM is No Android Pay, and flashing Xiaomi is more involved than normal, you need to request developer access from Xiaomi.

        • +2

Not only that, you'll see a noticeable camera performance drop too.

        • +1

I had issues with mi5 before it broke, had to update first to china rom, then get it unlocked, then flash it.

Mi5s which I also broke was really smooth to get latest official global rom, system update method right away, no unlocking needed.

Most xiaomi phones dont have NFC, even Mi5c doesnt have it, the only phone I'd recommend from personal experience from xiaomi is a redmi 3, redmi 4, redmi note 3 or redmi note 4. On sale delivered you can find deals around $150.

Their flagship phones are not durable at all :(

Looking forward to usb type c redmi series, I currently use Redmi Pro which I've had no issues with but there is no official global rom for it.

        • +5

@Wonderfool: Current Lineage Camera is as good as stock MIUI in my experience. Previous versions were definitely poor.

        • +1

@Wonderfool: You can install the stock Snapdragon camera app via zip file. It's the same quality.

        • Android pay was working until a few days ago with magisk until Google updated safetynet :(

        • @donkeydoc: I'm genuinely surprised, my Mi5 Pro has been insanely durable!

The process to unlock was pretty easy for me. Go to the Mi website and fill out the online form request, 2 days later it was unlocked. My phone originally came with a global rom installed though, so never had to worry about a china rom. For a short time I switched to a rom off XDA but changed back to MiUi after about a month.

The only thing I use NFC for is Android Pay and it's never failed me.

        • @donkeydoc: bought a redmi 4x 5inch for 140aud delivered, working amazingly well, even the camera is quite decent!

        • @matt0:

          You world traveller you.

        • +1

          @Bamboozle: $500 for the Mi5 vs $1000+ for a Samsung/iPhone. That saving made the globetrotting possible ;)

        • Was just reading through here. Had the issue recently on my Mi5 regarding Android Pay/root cloaking. I solved it by removing SuperSU root and using Magisk instead. Needs a bit of fiddling, and installing Magisk Manager, but it works now. I got some errors, but just had to flash another kernal.

      • +1

Probably stock. Miui notification sucks so much balls and ram management have shat itself over the last 2 years. It's gotten progressively worse.

It's still good to use, and some features are REALLY nice, but at the exchange of basic performance.

      • AICP: Android Ice Cold Project. Is definitely my pick of the bunch.

  • +2

Had the Mi5s plus - lasted a few months and then one of the cameras died. Non existent warranty

  • Would this be better option than Redmi note 4?

    • +3

Depends. Camera and speed is much better. Have NFC (android pay, smart home, etc) and quick charge 3. Also really pretty.

RN4 doesn't need charging for 2 days and have SD card slot. Speed is good, but you do notice a few hip cups with some heavier usage on the RN3P, so I suspect RN4 will be the same issue. It's also larger and have the studier build of this year's phones.

        • camera and speed would be a factor and so is battery.
        • wont be bothering much abt screen size and sd card atm.
        • currently using Nexus 5x :-), but its lagging now a days
        • I am on telstra network (ALDI) and hence band 28 would be a concern and thats the same reason i still havent bought the RN4.
        • Pick mi5 then. The camera difference is a bit too jarring if you get the RN4.

Edit: do you live in whoop whoop land? Lack of band 28 hasn't been an issue. I mean, there is a reception difference between my R3NP Kate and Mi5, but no drop outs for mi5.

        • @Wonderfool: I am in Melb metro region..where telstra has good coverage and others are not that great..
what do you mean when you say reception difference?

        • +1

@bkoolrocks: one bar in reception difference in some places. Both still 4g.

        • @Wonderfool: that sounds ok to me :-)..
so the only concern now lies with warranty…still in double mind to get Mi or Moto G5 series.

        • +1

@bkoolrocks: my suggesting is for you to go to a phone store and see if they have g5 on display. If they're fast enough for you, get that instead. Camera is good, snapdragon 430 is not.

    • redmi note 4 will last longer, SD625 is a decent processor, it's not as good as 820 but is suffice for most high end games!

      • i dont really play games on phones..so that isnt a concern as well

    • i would think so.

  • Any deal for Mi Note 2?

    • Mi? no no

  • its also mentioning "Save an extra AU$33.98 for using the App". Can we stack it with the code?
Looks like you need a login to apply the code even !

  • +3

I have a Mi5 and its a fantastic phone for the price, however my loud speaker has stopped working all together.
Its really good components in a cheap body, there is a youtube video of a guy folding it in half with his hands.

    • Tbh I think an ebay Australian stock Zuk Z2 with recent code discounts for a total of around 270, you get all the warranty cover as per aus consumer law, is the pick of the cheap but high spec phones.

Zuk Z2 body is as hard as a rock ime. Perhaps to its detriment. Screen is fragile but everything else is very sturdy.

  • Can i know till what time this coupon will be valid? I ordered Redmi Note4 from Everbuying note4 and it seems this is better phone that that one apart from small screen size.

    • Sorry I don't have details on that. Seems like the onus of gambling is on you. Good luck :)

  • +1

    Thanks Hahuh.

This phone has great reviews. I was looking for this phone quite a while and got it now for 271AUD.

  • +1

hahaha i see you sub to mohammad from TechUtopia?

    • :)

        peace be upon you

Spent 350 on one about a month ago. Great phone.

  • So confirmed, this phone will work on vodafone. Anyone know what they use in the US (specifically T-mobile - planning to take it over there)?

  • I would strongly recommend people pick up glass screen protectors (extremely cheap on Ali express) and good case. Unless you want something like this to happen https://youtu.be/d2jav7UdQtE

  • The Code you entered has expired.
    im getting this now

  • Not sure if you want to deal with Gearbest. Warranty and replacement is a huge B$%@#. Even if it is ~$300. Have one minor issue with it, and you will not get a response from them you like. I have a broken adaptor for a 'smart' lamp and they won't replace the bloody $5 thing.

    • Depends. Would you like that with warranty at the expense of it costing you $60?

  • +2

This seemed so perfect then no micro sd slot. So close. For a few dollars more a nicer body and decent loudspeaker would make this the dream machine to have for the money conscious.

    • Sorry. You don’t get to complain. It’s a pretty good price for a pretty good phone. The reason you’ve mentioned is why I don’t rock it (that and the screen size & the black inner “bezel” ) but that’s just nit picking on my part

      • This is Ozbargain lol all we do is complain you must be new lol

  • This code seems expired but this one seems to do it for $196USD. P24Mi506

Warning to all!! Do not buy this from Gear best. I bought mine on the 20th of June. They emailed me saying it has been shipped on the 21st, when I check tracking (which stops working after package leaves HK) it say it was shipped on the 27th. So they sat on my order for exactly a week, lied about shipping it and I still dont have it. I am unable to track it and when I emailed them, they say wait 25 working days, which is like getting something delivered from the moon.

People might say it is coming from China so it is taking long. I bought the screen protector and case from China using eBay and had both delivered within the first 9 days, so definitely not China or their post just Gears**t and their crappy service.

  • Is there any reason for me to upgrade from my galaxy s5 to this?
I currently have no issues with the s5, good size, great battery life, good screen, good enough cpu to run anything I need… would I just be wasting money and possibly buying a worse phone if I were to get this?

  • Has anyone's phone been sent as of late? I've ordered mine 10 days ago and they keep pushing back shipping (now a further 7-15 days), the Gearbest rep on here is no longer replying either.
