bit wary of buying gift cards these days from retailers.
Why are you wary? I'm looking at purchasing $800 worth for $640 in preparation for next years new high school uniform. Then when they have 20% off in store I will go purchase all supplies.
Should I be worried purchasing these in advance?
This time last year I purchased 2 x $500 cards for $800 and then waited until about October for the 20% off School supplies. I had a Year 7 starter and purchased school everything from blazer to socks online with pickup from the local Lowes store. They were even happy to exchange sizes closer to the start of the year as we purchased larger sizes in anticipation of a growth spurt. Basically had no problems and saved a bundle. Have just purchased another $200 card for extra supplies with the same approach intended (so extra socks etc). While I get that some people worry about gift cards being an unsecured item my experience is have a plan to use them to maximise your savings over a reasonable timeframe and you shouldn't get caught out. They have the 20% off gift cards about this time each year (I guess for EOFY) so I wouldn't see it as a desperate attempt to get cash into the business. Sorry for the long post.
tl;dr - don't worry, it's a good plan for school purchases.
