The Kid Wants a Phone under $100

He is only going to use it for photos basic platformer games and some stop animation app. What is his best bang for buck?

G4 Play is not a bad choice either but stock has run dry

There are phones under $99 but these tend to be 'supermarket phones' that you buy from the front counter of Colesworths… these are usually very low end, have limited memory (4GB to 8GB) and will only be usable strictly as a phone, and won't do much in terms of apps or games.

    • Cheers taking a look :)

    • My 12 year old has one of the Redmis and been very happy with it, although we paid a bit extra for 3GB RAM

    • Homtom.

So he actually doesn't want a phone?

    • +1

That is correct. Yet he wants a phone. Too smart for us older generation…

  • Telstra 4GX plus $79 Office works. Optus ZTE Chat 4G $99 Coles or Ebay, maybe cheaper. Both 5 inch screen and 1 Gig RAM

    • Good call although I think i can persuade him to pay a little for 2gb!

  • How old is "the kid"? If he's in anything close to high school, be prepared for the nagging for an iphone!

I deliberately didn't mention the age because I already know what he wants/needs. He will never get an iphone, at least not under my roof :)

Prob when you upgrade your iphone, he could have your old one.

I have a HUAWEI Y550. Kids always get the better stuff :(
Maybe when he upgrades I can have his phone :)

He wants it to watch porn.

    • Not without a wifi password, hotspot or simcard :)

      • Let the kid have his fun!

I help save them from the depravity of this immoral world. They have a lifetime to discover the pitfalls of adulthood.

@figarow: You sound like a lot of fun

      • so what's the point of a phone without all that?

        • Well smart phones are able to run applications such as games. They also have cameras. My kids love to take photos, videos and play games. They are also starting to get involved in stop animation and love to make productions. They enjoy being creative and learning also which certain apps can help with. I don't allow them to spend too much time on the phone/digial device they prefer to play outside anyway. The digital side of things is just a small portion of their daily activities.

        • @figarow:
In that case, wouldn't a tablet make more sense so that he doesn't need to squint with a bigger screen? No real need for the "modem" part of the device if you don't intend to put a SIM card in there for phone calls.
Tablets are basically bigger phones without the phone capability.

        • @bobbified: They have used tablets before and prefer phones. Smaller, more compact and generally better quality they don't care about the smaller screen at all actually.

        • @figarow:

          aaah..fair enough.
(I was just thinking before the phone capabilities generally adds extra cost to the device)

@bobbified: Yeah its a trade off, they have had tablets in the past and actually didn't really like them that much too big lol. I think the younger kids like the tablets but as they get older phones become easier to use, sits in your pocket and just whip it out. also battery life seems to be better.
