Courtesy to nick123 who posted it at Top Bargains.

The biggest positive i have found is with Motorola Marshmallow you can allocate the sd card memory as the internal memory and hence its not limited to 16 GB.

Create a hub of entertainment and build a library of songs and photos with 16GB storage that is easily expanded with a micro SD card for an additional 128GB.*
Built on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the Moto G4 Play enjoys a streamlined, clean interface that will give you all the functions and services you need without having a cluttered experience.
Never miss a moment, with an 8MP F2.2 rear camera and a 5MP front camera that offers fast image capture to record a family moment instantly.
A water-repellent nano coating protects your Moto G$ from spills, splashes and even a little rain without the hassle of covering plugs.

Officeworks stock this for a -5% price match.

    • +2

Most stores showing no stock though.

      • Any stores in Sydney that's showing with stock?

      • And you can't buy online from OW only in store.

    • Looks like out of stock for every Officeworks around me and online.

  • +1

Great price, thanks OP, picked one up for Mum.

    • Yep, probably cheapest price ever here locally. Do both sims work for 3G/4G after the Android 7 Nougat OTA update?

      • on the G4 plus they do.

  • What's the signal like?

    • Think when justmike said "picked one up", he meant he ordered one online, so would not be able to check signal yet.

    • +1

      Very signally

  • Thanks OP, got one delivered. :)

  • +1

    Any cheap spigen covers??

  • +3

Damn, impulsive buys. Bought two but now I regretted..

    • +7

Buyers remorse… it's an OzBargain staple

      • +10

Yeah, once I bought 150,000 staples.

        Regretted it.

        • +32

          Looked good on paper…

      • Want to sell one for a hundred bucks lol

    • not sure how good it is seeing the reviews below

  • I just brought a g4 plus last week. I would have brought the play instead if this offer came a week early.

    • +18

Where did you bring the G4?

    • +3

Isn't Plus more powerful than this Play?

    • +1

      Speak English or Die!!!

    • +3

The Plus is superior to the G4 Play in nearly every way; better processor, camera, screen, etc.

  • Can you play games smoothly on these?

    • +12

      You can play snake.

      • +11

sure, but what games can you play on the phone?

        • +7

you can take a picture of yourself playing snake with the phone.

picture may be murky though, this is a budget phone

        • +1

yeah …not sure what this gaming on a phone is …. if you own a console or PC you have real gaming and things like clash run on everything because the developer have to cater for old phones to get market uptake.

    • Umm what about Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Hearthstone?

      • +2

Have you searched any of the phone's reviews? Not recommended for games - lags.

      • Of course.

  • colour me stupid but this looks to be worse then a 3rd gen moto g which imo is pretty past its use by date - the camera in particular is pretty rubbish. But i guess its only a little $100…

    • +2

Reviews seem to support that. It's a budget version. Also recommend not to have great expectations!

Unfortunately, this processor was not upgraded from the third-generation Moto G. This processor was announced in December 2013 and it was specifically designed for lower cost devices in developing countries. Even though it is an outdated processor, it does a great job at handling productivity apps. However, you will notice games having lagging issues.

      • like to buy a fone for the apps, not the games. what is best value for money now?

        • Someone else may help - courier just delivered this phone :-)

    • +2

Not sure why youre getting downvoted because youre right. Probably the angry ozbargainers that already impulse ordered one and trying to justify their purchase they already regret.

  • NFC? Ordered one any way.

  • Can anyone confirm if this model has both sims configured to work with 3G/4G ??

    • +1
      1. Second sim will only operate on the 2G network.

2G network has been shut down already.

      • +2

        4G/2G only.

        https://www.motorola.com.au/products/moto-g-play

        4G LTE (B1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 40)

Micro-SIM nano-SIM compatible with an adaptor (sold separately).
        Dual Sim - 4G/2G⁶

        • Thanks for the helpful comments. I thought I read somewhere that after Android 7 Nougat update both sims were compatible with 3G/4G, that must have been for the Moto G 4 ( non Play version ) with the Snapdragon 617.

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:

Yep that's for the plus, the play lacks the hardware to do 4G/3G.

No Snapdragon 410 phone has 4G/3G dual SIM.

        • @StrayfireX:

Correct. Thought I read that someone with the G4 also had both sims working on 3G/4G after the Nougat update.

    • No, you need a G4 Plus, Moto Z Play or Moto Z.

      • Not sure if I need, but certainly I want those phones more lol.

  • almost bought then realised it was g4 play and not g4

    • difference?

This is a smart phone and therefore can at least do skype/whatsapp calls right?

      • yes … and it's a great phone with Australian support and android 7 …..

      • +2

The G4 Play is the budget version of the G4.
There's also a G4 Plus, which is the most high-end variant that has fingerprint scanner.

They are also very different when it comes to retail price.

        Main differences

Different processor (Snapdragon 410 vs Snapdragon 617)
Internal memory and RAM (G4 variants have 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage)
Display size and resolution (720p 5 inch versus 1080p 5.5 inch)
Battery size (2800mah removable versus 3000 mah non removable battery)
        Camera quality etc.

        • G4 Plus is desirable. But it's also $100 more..

        • @jhk365:

Would love to currently buy the Moto G4 Plus for $238 but missed out on the Mobicity 3GB version sale and stalled on the Good Guys Sale last month ( both G4 plus and the new G5 plus ).

If you find a G4 plus for below $250 locally, could you link please.

  • Anyone know why Click & Collect from QV Melbourne is not possible? With some other stores it says "No stock" but QV Melbourne currently doesn't even seem to be listed.

    • +1

Strange about that… But Uncle Harvey wants $110 more!

    • +3

      Same company.

  • So tempting although it doesn't seem to be much of a step up from my moto g2

  • Biggest difference would be 4G support. Really needed in a lot of areas as re-framing a lot of 3G into 4G now.

  • Terms & Conditions
    Special Price

    Offer ends 2nd of July 2017 (C339931)

    • With almost 2500 clicks so far, stock may not last that long. On clearance & sold out at other retailers.

      • +1

And it's gone after nearly 5000 clicks. Prepare for cancellations :-(

  • +1

I formatted my sd card as internal storage on moto g4 plus, it only lasted for 1 month. Sd card was then corrupted, couldn't be read and totally dead.
It was a sandisk ultra plus though, maybe the card itself is not fast enough (?)

    • I had similar experience with my Moto G2 and the dead SD card was a Samsung EVO. I don't think it's a card speed problem, but rather the flaws either from the phones or from Android itself. My Samsung tablet S2 killed a Samsung EVO a while back as well and it was not even configured as internal storage.

Bought - my dearest phone purchase since my Nokia101 (around 1992) ;-) Now have the Ozbargain sweats, waiting… for purchase to actually arrive. This phone will be 2-3 times the price of my previous Androids!

3 phones have died in last week (1 year old $54 Telstra Buzz failed at beach, 2 year old $40 Huawei Y550 lost its internal memory a few days later - both while in rural Japan, & much older $50 Huawei phone failed on my return this week). Only had a 3 year old $79 Huawei Ascend G526 still operating after a factory reset, but it isn't up to modern apps etc. Hope that one lasts until this phone is delivered.

    • +5

Maybe you'll soon learn that sometimes it's worth spending a bit more on items you use regularly, e.g. phones and shoes. Obviously never pay retail though.

      • +4

Oh great teacher, as a child, I was taught to buy as good quality tools as I could afford - "they'll last a lifetime". Was a good lesson when a product will be in constant use for a long time. Still use those old tools.

With time I learnt not to buy high price ephemeral goods like phones & fashion clothes, that would be quickly superseded, or only used a few times.

Discontinued models like this phone can offer good value for my current use.
So I upgrade my low value but generally well regarded (by Ozbargainer reports) phones annually. Phones usually cost no more than $1/wk of use. Once a phone is replaced, it is kept as a backup. Strategy had worked well for decades. Until a week ago, never had a phone fail while in use.

Last week an unexpected wave took out my phone in a sea cave in Japan. My intention was to stay very dry.

I think most phones no matter what their cost would have met the same end. I am very glad it wasn't expensive!

Unfortunately the old backup phone internal memory completely failed after loading it up with latest apps - just bad luck. Felt isolated with no internet in a rural village where no one spoke English. I was plannong my return to Tokyo early the next morning, when it failed.
On my return to Oz, even the landline phone line did not work (it's free). The third phone battery would not take a charge after not being used for years. Not that unexpected. Luckily a 3 year old Huawei is performing well. So wanted a cost-effective phone asap & bought this one.

        The lessons…
to invest in a good case (possibly more expensive than the cheap phone, so maybe not) or look after the phone & not take the phone into hazardous conditions ;-)
don't rely on tech - it may fail, no matter what the price.
        we all make mistakes :-)
and… don't rely on HN/Dom to deliver the goods you ordered😉

As for spending money on good shoes… took Timberland boots & very comfy Sketchers shoes on month trip to Japan - both free, like most of my clothes.

It's not such a simple lesson - more a matter of personal values & priorities. I look after my feet more than my phones. Phones are replaceable, feet aren't (well only at the cellular level).

        • +2

Although I agree with cymon ( and gave him/her an upvote ), your comment clarifies your situation beautifully.

A lot of people on here spend big money on phones, but forget that a lot of people prefer to just have a basic ( bought super cheap ) smartphone or two or three that does not make you cry if you drop it and crack screen, or in your and my case ( funnily both Huawei Y550's ) lost our phones to the Ocean.

I had one stolen on bus travelling through Thailand, that hurt as it was a nice HTC ( Optus prepaid $199 ).

Then you might have saved money to put towards a nice holiday such as yours to Japan etc. Did you use those phones on the Japanese mobile networks or just using wifi?

I think if you get the Moto G4 play you will be very happy ( after forgetting about your +$100 spend.

Equally if you get the Huawei Y6 Elite and get it unlocked and disable some not needed Apps etc ( do a factory re-set after the update download and install if needed to free up +-1/2 GB space ). Similar screen, performance, band support ( only lacking the B7/2600mHz not such a biggy ), and decent camera. For $89 ( +-115 unlocked and tempered glass screen protector installed + reasonable case from ebay will be happy days :-)

        • @ozhunter68:
Just used phones on Wi-Fi (where available) in Japan. Easily found it at convenience stores. Had an amazing $40/n beach house in rugged Izu Peninsula, SW of Tokyo for 12 days - used Wi-Fi there. Great holiday.

Just had a bad week with technology, on way back to Oz. Had cracked both phone screens earlier this year. But no great loss at those prices. Upside is I cleared my drawers of old tech. Never have lost a phone, luckily.

I enjoy finding novel solutions to problems, rather than just throw money at it. Having travelled OS on holiday up to 9 months a year for a decade until recently, money is usually not the issue.

Currently using 3 year old Huawei G526 on 4G. Solving memory issues & old Bluetooth (won't detect free Fitbit) by using a free locked 3G Vodafone mobile from Woolies deal last year - tethered to G526. Loaded it with apps that are less frequently used (like Fitbit). Not the most convenient, but the price is right ;-)

Thanks for advice on Y6 - took the same steps with the G526 of update OS, factory reset, disable or remove unnecessary apps. Might need it if order is cancelled. Not bothered either way.

Happy days, but I'd rather be back in Japan.

        • @Infidel:

Sounds like a great holiday with a little overdue tech bad luck.

Better than my last trip overseas where I had my bumbag which had my money belt bag in it which included my passport and back-up card as well as cash ( removed as not comfortable on bus seat and had false sense of security in aircon bus in broad daylight ), my main travel Master card as well as Australian drivers licence and a $400 camera complete with memory card full of photos.
Now that was a big lesson for me to learn not to leave my guard down like that and and break a Golden security Travel Rule by not keep all valuables in one place. It got worse after that, but that's another story :-)

Had a G526 some time ago and still now my moms back up phone. Not a bad phone especially if using on Vodafone ( can get one of their 4G bands used ).

          @ozhunter68:
          Ouch!
I keep my gear to a minimum (carry on only) & never travel with anything I can't afford to lose. Customs assumed I had lost my luggage on arrival last week.

I wear trousers with hidden zippered pockets to protect valuables. I have a full set of these convertable (to shorts) trousers & can pat them down to check everything is where it ought to be.

Travelling in Japan is very safe. When I once dropped my wallet in a bus, it seemed everyone made sure I got it back.

I've lost very little in my travels - mainly small items of little value when I fell asleep on long distance buses & forgot to check when exiting. Someone observed I must be a seasoned traveller, as I now check twice before leaving. It's often a long trip back if something is forgotten.

Phone was to be replaced on my return to Oz, it just was forced on me a little earlier than I wanted. $100 was set aside for purchase months ago. Was just waiting for a good deal, like this.

          @Infidel:
Hi, sorry to ask you this. Not related to this phone. I am planning to go Japan in Dec and I saw you comment on 40/n beach house in Izu Peninzula. I ma really interested. Can you tell me the beach house name? Rdgs.

        • +1

          @SJ898:
I contacted the owners directly to negotiate the price in off-season. You could contact through their Cafe e73 (big wave) & surf school in next town. They have several accommodation options. English language may be a problem, but artist Miki is fairly proficient. (Tell them Bruce recommended their place, so they know why you're contacting them.)

The former art gallery space by a steam & rock beach (with good small kitchen) I stayed in is not shown (called 1173 House (Front of the sea)), but is on Airbnb. Price is higher on that site & includes currency conversion fees!

Prices in Japan often increase with number of occupants - I was on my own, enjoying the solitude before returning to Tokyo for another Matsuri (festival). So paid 10,000¥ each 3 days. Price may vary.

It is located in Touji (beach), South of Shimoda - the end of the rail journey from Tokyo. 10 minutes walk through a hand dug tunnel to sand beach with amazing rock formations & huge cave - a tourist attraction. Bus #2 from Shimoda operates only twice per weekday - school run.

These beaches really only operate in July & August. There is a Local Shop run by an old woman, with bare necessities (milk, chocolate, packet ramen, alcohol). There is no where to eat or go out in local farming village. Closest other shop is 1 hour walk each way or faster by bike. Farmers market & supermarket is bit further. Its bloody quiet, but the trail around the Cape goes past the front gate & around to an amazing sandy Yumigahama Beach in next town. (Don't explore the sea caves with unprotected phone in your pocket!)

Bicycle with gears included. But vehicle would make access around the fantastic Geo(logical) Park covering the interesting Izu Peninsula, Onsen, & restaurants more enjoyable. There are hiking trails around most of the rugged coastline & many mountains.

          Enjoy your trip.

Are you asking about getting the Huawei Y6 unlocked? If so the ebay unlocker service which I used and recommended by other OzBargainers no longer has a listing, but I asked them a Question whether they still will unlock a Y6. Will keep you updated when I get a positive answer.
