Optus 200GB Wireless Broadband (up to 12/1mbps) - $60/Month to Month for Existing Postpaid/ $30+ Plan Customers (in Store ONLY)

171

Okay, so I signed up for this deal - 100 GB month to month for $70 with no modem, yesterday after chatting with Optus chat support and upon them confirming that they don't give any discounts for existing Optus customers. I walked into Coles and Kmart today to check the availability of E3315 and they were out of stock. The girl at Kmart advised to check in Optus store.

Optus store offered me this better deal as I am already an eligible customer with $30+ monthly plan. ($20 discount on original plan)

  • $60 a month for month-to-month - min. total $300 (For non-Optus customers, Minimum total cost in first month is $320 with $240 upfront modem)
  • $70 a month for 12 months - min. total $840 (For non-Optus customers, Minimum total cost over 12 months is $1080 including $80 per month for plan and $10 per month for modem)
  • $60 a month for 24 months - min. total $1440 (For non-Optus customers, Minimum total cost over 24 months is $1920 including $80 per month and $0 for modem)

Optus store rep cancelled my earlier order and helped me order the second one.

Extra $10GB at $10 and capped at 5 topups per month.
Edit: fine image

  • Great deal! Can you post a snapshot of your order confirmation (without your details - just whats included)?

    • +1

Have edited with an in-store flyer. Would that suffice?

Pretty sure this is home wireless broadband.

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-wireless-broadba…

    • -5

Yes it is. Different names, same thing.

      • NOT the same thing. Going from the 100gb plan to the 200gb plan, you are effectively cutting your huge speeds from the Optus 4G mobile network down to a max of 12mbs. In reality I have found it is even worse at about 5mbs best case scenario.

        • +1

well… some NBN are also at that speed, so it's not a bad deal when you can "Carry" it with you.

        • -2

@dlovep: my nbn speeds is 95mbps.

Dont compaire my nbn with that slow crap.

        • +2

@Axelstrife: Easy tiger, he/she was merely making a general comment, not specifically pointing out your internet connection.

        • -2

@cvas:I hate how people see NBN's slowest speed and use that as a comparison to adsl2+ 4g etc…

        • @Axelstrife: Who did ? compaire yourself ?

    • +1

Yes and it involves the Huawei modem …… Which you need to buy….recall it's on a different apn than the cheapy modems / dongles and it think it targets 2300mhz … Could be wrong.

I tried to just get the SIM, said I can fix the apn on my home modem, but couldn't close the deal without buying the $200 modem.

      • +2

        HOME WIRELESS…Different to MOBILE.

      • It's 2300 and 700 - 4G Plus networks

  • +1

It cost me $70 for 50gb last month :/

  • +2

Just be careful with it cos their usage meter is useless (up to 48 hours behind). I was charged excess last month.

    • +1

+1 I believe this is all part of their strategy. Sell the plans at a very slim margin and make money when customers exceed their usage.

      • +1

It seems all Optus postpaid usage meters are quite delayed even for calls and they don't make money off unlimited plan call.

        • That's because they use all the live usage meters on prepaid customers.:-)

  • would be nice if you could get the month-to-month 200Gb plan for $80/month without having to pay $240 for the modem… already have a 4G dongle ready :(

    • +1

Yeah just change apn and it would work. They try and have a set and forget bundle for most users so hence wireless modem bundle ….. Turn on and ready to go.

  • +3

Extra $10GB at $10 and capped at 5 topups per month.

So back to the bad old days of nervously watching your usage, and waking up to find Windows did a $50 self-update, and no quota left.

Actually, $50 limit is not so bad. People were getting $2000 excess usage bills in the past.

  • Do they offer uncapped video streaming on these deals? Similar to their mobile plans? Really enticing if they do.

Plus on their website they boast a free month of access with this deal? Wonder if you can combine it?

    • -3

They don't do for this plan, straight. But there is a workaround.

Add unmetered Netflix, iView, Stan to your mobile plan for $10 a month and then do a data pool with the Wireless broadband. Customer support executive suggested this. Don't hold me accountable though :)

      • Awesome, thanks for the suggestion! That first month $80 offer should also work by the way OP as seen on the webpage

      • +6

You can't data pool the Home Wireless Broadband product with any other product.
Sorry to say but you're giving out the wrong info.

  • I have heard the speeds on these are capped? 4G 5mb and 4Gx at 12mb? Anyone confirm this?

Edit: can see this actually when looking at the plan

    • yes…

HOME wireless broadband = capped at 12mb
      MOBILE broadband = uncapped speed

  • Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between this home wireless broadband vs what I currently have at home (ADSL 2+ I think, modem is connected to phone line but all my devices are connected wirelessly).

    • the home wireless broadband uses a modem that uses 4g instead of a phone line to connect to the internet. wireless broadband is also capped at a max of 12/1Mbps.

    • Home wireless broadband uses a sim card (just like phone sim card) and the only thing need to be plugged is power point (so you can move the modem around pretty much anywhere as long as there's a power point), whereas ADSL2+ uses phone line and power.

    • I'd stay with your ADSL unless it's really slow or unstable (shouldn't be dearer).

  • +2

This is their normal Home Wireless Broadband deal.
    Different compared to Mobile Broadband.

Home Wireless Broadband is capped at 12/1 speeds in 2300mhz areas, or 5/1 in other areas.

The sim is locked to the home broadband modem, so you can't just take it out and use it in a mobile wifi dongle while you travel.

  • i was able to get home wireless broadband through the sales chat on the optus website. they were the ones to bring up the discount as well. this was about 2 weeks ago. also I believe this deal is confusing 2 different plans. 1 is extra mobile data that you can take with you in a dongle and the other is home wireless broadband which comes with a modem and has to be used at home.

  • So basically 80 p/m, unless you are an existing Optus customer?

  • +2

As presented this is a good deal - $60pm, month to month for 200gb home wireless broadband however it should not be compared with the 100gb mobile broadband deal that OP references at the start of his post. It's apples and oranges. As has been stated by other commenters, Optus mobile broadband is not the same as home wireless broadband. The main difference being the speed and to some people this is worth having less allowance at a higher price.

    • +1

Thanks for clarifying. The home wireless is capped at 12/1, isn't it?

For that I'm just going to go for the 70/100gb deal as that won't be speed restricted.

  • Finally 4G plans are getting within reach. By the time my street gets NBN (end of 2018) I will be on 4G+ unlimited for the same price

    • -1

4G+ unlimited? What plan are you on? Why is it unlimited?

      • +1

You'll note they said "By the time my street gets NBN (end of 2018)" they never mentioned they have it right now.

        • Too true. 100GB for $70 on 4G+ is pretty good deal even now, if you dont download much. If you can get Netflix hack with extra $10/m on a shared data, then it would be even better.
My traffic in the last few years was mostly IPTV, PS4 and youtube. Using around 250GB at the moment. Hopefully in the next year we will get these plans on 4G. Was reading an article that suggested unlimited plans by the end of this year

  • Guys, I'm moving to a new home with no cable/NBN. I might not even have ADSL2+ but it's possible. So ADSL2+ vs Optus Home Wireless? 200GB is kinda not enough for the family (300GB/month average) but the ADSL2+ speed is slower than Home Wireless if I'm right? Any idea is appreciated.

    • +1

If you can't get a fixed wireless solution, maybe check out Vividwireless as a last resort.

It's the same concept as Optus Home Wireless except that it only works on 2300mhz and is speed limited to 10/1.
They have an unlimited data plan for $89.

Of course, if you can get ADSL2+ in your area then maybe give that a shot first to see what the speeds are like.

  • Can anyone recommend a decent deal operating off the Telstra network (but not necessarily Telstra)?

    • Around 100Gb would do
    • Cheaper is more important than faster for me

I'm moving into a town that has rubbish ADSL, no ports, and no NBN.

I recently picked up one of those Telstra modems from Woolies for $10.

    Thanks!

    • This Optus deal is better than you'll get anywhere else for wireless at the moment. Why do you need Telstra? From memory they charge around the $150 for 50gb monthly.

      • I'm currently running Kogan XL (Vodafone) from a previous deal. Great price and the coverage is mostly decent, except at home.

I've just moved to Kingscliff NSW.

According to Voda's coverage map I'm right in the middle of a full 4G area. My devices are all spending 80% of their time on 2G.

I'll definitely be giving Optus (or one of their resellers) a go but I'm not expecting much better based on friends phone coverage. 4G but barely, if you're lucky.

Hence me asking about what's out there on the Telstra network…

        • Fair enough I can see why you'd opt for Telstra. I was in the same boat. Crap 4g reception at my house with Optus on an iPhone but needed their cheaper plan as I couldn't justify Telstras pricey mobile wireless plans. Wired internet was out of the question due to no ports. Anyway took the risk with Optus and also purchased a couple of antennas off eBay for the modem less than $10 the pair and the erection is sitting at half bar. Sorry I mean the reception is half the bars all the time but the reliability is good and speed is ok. About 5mbps at all times.

        • Yeah, I'm going to play around with placement/antennae a little before I lock myself in to anything too pricey.

I have a feeling 4G congestion kicks in as well as variable reception, but will have to test that theory.

Ovo on Optus also looks worth a try but will check if they have a 'trial' period.

          Thanks for the input. :)

  • Hi everyone, I am new to Oz bargain but wanted to pick you brains a bit with regards to internet plans etc. We are about to live in an area of no ADSL or NBN but we can get Optus 4g. We use around 200 plus gig a month now. we don't do much streaming but it seems that may be the only way to watch tv etc. What do you think is the best plan for me to go for? I use prepay now but am happy to get on a plan if that's what's needed. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

  • This is just the Home Wireless Broadband service and the $20/month discount is available online not just in store for eligible existing customers. Where's the bargain if it's regular price?
