  • Has been a pretty good modem for our NBN (although it's only been a week). Only issue I've had is having to turn my iPad WiFi on and off a few times a day as it seems to lose connection (not drop WiFi signal).

    • +1

WiFi dropout for iPad probably due to channel issue with router, try lower channels, it did help me with diff router though.

  • $209 at MSY, but their stock is a bit patchy and that's not delivered

  • FWIW, I ended up paying a bit more and managed to get Officeworks to price match the Wireless 1 eBay store when they had it for $249. They've currently got it for $259 if anyone prefers to pay a bit more and buy locally for ease of return (my main reason).

It's strange that whenever there's an eBay discount involved the prices somehow skyrocket. This was cheaper many times in the past, and one example being this deal in April: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/304070

  • Be careful purchasing one of these for the NBN. I have one and when I switched to HFC NBN with iiNet the d7000 wouldn't pick up the Internet. When I chatted to iiNet they said they could only give support for their crappy modem router. From what I can tell iiNet have some hidden settings that are loaded straight onto their modem/router. Unfortunately my d7000 is just sitting here collecting dust. I still might use it as a router.

It's not a cable modem. How would it connect to HFC?

Nonetheless, it's interesting to see iiNet's policy, "If your address is serviced by NBN HFC you will need a $89 modem, supplied by us, in order to receive your service (discounted to $0 on a 24 month contract)". I'd seen quite a few posts on Whirlpool that suggest that a Telstra cable modem would work for other providers. What a mess, difficult to know what's going to happen, and NBN keeps everything secret for some "commercial-in-confidence" reason.

Some providers use a verifier on their routers. Dodo is another who does this. I have fttp and used to have dodo and optus. Can use whatever I like with optus but can't change the dodo router. I have since changed my dodo connection to myrepublic. No issues changing routers over with them.

        • Hi, just a question. I am not tech savvy enough to know what is going on but I bought a D7000 to use with MyRepublic FTTN NBN connection and I can't get it to work, I am currently using my Telstra supplied NBN modem with the MyRepublic connection without issue but I can't seem to get my D7000 to work.

I hope you can shed some light for me.

@MakingBacon: just looked up screenshots for that modem router. Are you connecting via the internet or dsl port? From what I can figure, fttn requires a vdsl modem so would need to connect to dsl port and not internet.
Hope this helps, it's just a guess from looking at screenshots.
I'll do some research online and see what I can find though. Would prefer to I've a definite answer and not a guess from looking at a picture.

@MakingBacon: Apparently the d7000 requires the latest firmware to be installed for fttn connections according to this list from whirlpool.

          http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

          Model: Netgear Nighthawk D7000
Status: Working, but needs the latest firmware. V1.0.0.32_1.0.1 or above. whrl.pl/RetRXM
          Chipset: Broadcom BCM63138 (63137 SoC)
          Firmware(s): 1.0.1.48
          RSP Providing: None
          Features: AC1900, 5-pt Gigabit, 2 USB3, 1.0Ghz dualcore
          Bridge Mode Available: Yes

If you are unsure on how to update the firmware, there should be a how to on the Netgear site as well as the link to the latest firmware.
Just read up and download the firmware using the telstra modem. Then switch to the d7000 to flash it.
          I do hope this helps.

        • @d1s34s3d:

Wow, thanks for that matey. I'll give it a try when I get home from work. Thanks again

        • @MakingBacon: All good. Looking at the issues nikovegna was having I also found another thing to try on yours. Make sure the d7000 is set to ipoe and not ppoe. Telstra's modems are apparently set to ipoe by default and that could be why it's working and not the d7000.

        • @MakingBacon:

I have done installs for people on FTTN before and they have this modem and it doesnt grab sync. But i plug my test modem in and no more than 2 minutes and syncs up.

      • Yeah, I have no idea but I figured that i could connect it to the NBN box installed with an ethernet cable. Shame it all can't be as simple as it is in my head. I eventually succumbed to the iiNet one.

        • Just had a quick look at iinet site. They state their service is supposed to be plug and play with any whitelist modem router. That being said, it may be the firmware issue mentioned on the whirlpool forum I linked in my reply earlier.
I'd try updating the firmware and seeing if it'll autoconnect. Another idea if that didn't work would be to log into the modem and see if vdsl2 is enabled.

        • @d1s34s3d: yeah I've done the update and the vdsl2 business but to no luck. I spoke with the chumps at the HFC support line and he said that he couldn't support me or else he would get "yelled at". He then suggested I turn to the netgear support line. I've spoken with a couple of tech friends and they have suggested that there are some hidden settings with the iiNet modem router.

        • @Nikovegna: Yeah. That sounds like what dodo does with theirs as well.

        • @d1s34s3d: thanks for your help though. Much appreciated.

        • @Nikovegna: Just had a look around on a couple of forums. Couldn't find any info on full connection settings, just that the main problem most have had is setting it as ppoe instead of ipoe. I didn't see anything on iinets site about this but it was on a whirlpool forum posted by an iinet representative.
You've said you've tried many things already but as this was the first and only instance I saw mentioning ipoe I thought it would be best to pass it on.
Might be similar issue makingbacon has as telstra's nbn modem is set to ipoe by default from what I just read.

      • You could also ask iinet to configure your iinet modem as a bridge modem. Then you can connect your Netgear as the router.
        That works.

  • On a side note, existing users- there's a new firmware update available. This device has had its share of bad security issues.

    • R7000 != D7000 (router vs modem/router)

  • +1

I have one of these and has been pretty reliable. but your modem router is only has good (or bad) as your internet connection/ISP. My connection is terrible… Telstra Bigpond sucks!
