  • Pretty regular price. 1.5TB HDD's are about $80 now. I guess it's only a good deal if you want the 5450, which would be a perfect HTPC GPU being passively cooled.

    • Most $80 1.5TB hard disk are 5400RPM but this one is 7200RPM which is around $90-$100.

Actually I did some checking with the model number. Turns out they are the problematic series of 7200.11 Seagate drives with self-bricking 'features'.

I would be very careful about purchasing these drives, as 1) they may come shipped with older firmware which has the problem and 2) a couple of users on the Qnap forums complains that the drive has poor performance in NAS drives.

If you guys are willing to take the gamble, go ahead. I have a 7200.11 (640GB) drive which isn't affected, but results on google shows that the 1.5 TB versions are (or were).

      • Did some quick research, and it looks like most of the issues with this drive are a year+ old. Is it still an issue? Or would it only be old stock/firmware that has an issue? Any links to current products?

        • Only with old firmware they become an issue. But, I don't know how long ago these drives were stocked or when they were produced.
Hence, check the firmware on these drives before you use them for anything important.

          • @scrimshaw: Can the firmware be updated?

            • +2

@stumo: I have added download links for the firmware updater on the main post.

              • @scrimshaw: Please bear in mind though, that the Seagate util reported both my 1tb 7200.11s as having updated firmware, but they still failed within 1 month of purchase!

The upshot is, if you're gonna spin the wheel, update the firmware first (it's cheap insurance), don't store anything on it you can't afford to lose for at least 3 months (not that you should ever with any HDD), & keep your ear out for clicking sounds!

One good thing, Seagate will honour the warranty, so you won't end up with an expensive door stop; my refurbs are working reliably, if somewhat slowly now; but take some steps to minimise your downtime should it happen is my best advice! :)

          • @scrimshaw: if they are selling them at a decent price, what are the chances of them being purchased wholesale 12 months ago?

    • where from including delivery ? any links u got mate?

  • $10.59 shipping for me in WA.

  • pretty good deal, dig the passive 5450 especially!

  • seems like a good deal, and appreciate the firmware links.

Good deal, but no free shipping.

  • Good deal - I got 1 :D

  • when does this offer end?

  • It's really not that great a graphics card though.

    see http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-460-radeon-h…

the HD5450 is worse than the radeon x1950 pro that I bought in 2006.

market value is about $50 for the gfx card. As someone said, if the disk drive is worth $80, it's a decent deal only if your graphics card is a few tiers worse than the 5450 on the chart, and only if you game. Otherwise, any ol' graphics card would do.

5450 is ideal for a silent, energy efficient HTPC setup. Anything higher would be a waste of money, not to mention the likely fan noise.

Nobody will buy a 5450 for gaming but a very good card for HTPC.

  • deal gone?

  • yes, all gone link is broken

  • +1

I have a 5450 in my HTPC running 2 monitors including the one off the HDMI, never any issues with picture display and it looks fanatastic, pity I already have it all set up cos I would love the extra HDD space
