If you know someone with a .edu email address you can get the surface book i7 256gb dGPU for AU$2,523.74 + approx $100 cashback from cash rewards.

    • from where? is that from JB Hi-Fi? let us know pls.

      • +4

        From the Microsoft online store.

    • +2

Plus up to 20 points per dollar spent with microsoft rewards —> potential to convert to ~$40 skype credit

      • +4

20 points for Xbox gold members, 10 points for Level 2 members without gold and 1 point otherwise. Thought I should mention that.

    • Does anyone have a link to sign up to the 10% student discount? I'm finding it impossible to find it on their website…

    • .edu email discount doesn't apply. This message from Microsoft support: "If the product is already discounted there's no way for us to add another discount. Once discount for one item at a time".

  • Microsoft Surface Book i5 256GB - $2356.80
    Microsoft Surface Book i5 256GB - $2598.40

Why would I buy the second of these?

    • it's a cleverly disguised i7

      • …and a cleverly disguised Pro 4 i7 with 512GB at that.

    • pretty sure the more expensive one has a Dgpu

  • surprised nobody has said "waiting for the Surface Pro 5"… :/ lol

  • Can anyone give some insight as to whether these are decent machines?

Will be using it for personal & work mainly web browsing, remote desktop sessions and general office type use. No gaming

Have been looking at the i5 variant surface book or the dell xps 13 for some time and still haven't decided.

Hoping that the battery life on them is decent too (going by reviews, people claim a good 6hrs use)

      What are you interested in?

If you are looking for a computer that can run full scale computationally heavy applications that is portable, and can be used for taking written notes then 16gb i7 is fantastic. I5 8gb is also good.

Without repeating internet reviews is there something in particular that you want to gain an insight into about them?

Just an overall experience from anyone who has owned or used one. I've been into store and had a hands on feel with them, happy with it in that regard.

Wondering if there is anything I should know before pulling the trigger and actually buying one, I know I had been looking at the Dell XPS 13 for quite some time but have recently been put off by the large amount of reported issues with them i.e. coil whine, screen, touchpad and hinge issues.. I'd even been warned by the notebook sales person in store to steer clear of the XPS range :s

The general feedback on the Surface Book seems quite positive, just curious as to if there is anything I'm not thinking of that I should know as a potential owner of one in the coming days

I like it, the biggest gripe I have is sleep issues. I have turned on sleep delay to be an hour just so I don't end up in the having to power reset sleep problem. So save work before leaving it alone and have a long sleep timer. It doesn't happen all the time but does just when you think it won't. Could be weeks before occurances or months. Basically you just need to hold down power button until it shuts down and then it won't power on for a few minutes no matter how long you hold down power, then after a couple of min it will be ok to turn on. This does turn up as an issue online so I don't think it would be a surprise. This may have been fixed on the recent ones but i don't know, I just save my work before I leave it alone.

The battery life varies.. depends what programs you use, what screen brightness you choose, what you keep on (wifi,Bluetooth, etc). Your processor choice will also influence your battery life. I would say 3 hours is more realistic with constant office use (one note, word, PDF reader, excel all open).

One USB port can be tricky at times so a cheap USB hub could be handy too. Same deal with displays, an adapter may be useful for you.

If you do want it as a daily work computer invest in a seperate mouse and keyboard. At home I use Lenovo dock and whilst out of home I would as a minimum carry a mouse (the surface mouse isn't great but better than nothing so a better choice would be something you find comfortable and has Bluetooth). The foldable keyboard is ok but external ones are better.

I carry it in padded case. In the pocket there is USB hub, mouse, mini dp to hdmi adapter and power pack. Something like Thule MacBook carry case could work.

        • Thanks for the advice.

I'd always looked at the Surface Pro but now that there is a sale on the Surface Book it is within price range.

I'm imagining quite a different experience using the Book compared to the Pro though.

        • @shibbii:
Ultimately the difference will be the keyboard, right? Unless you want discreet gpu.

The sleep problem, from what I read, is a CPU issue so may occur on the book too? Never tried to follow it up.

The battery life would make a difference. So depends on your portability needs.

I did forego the book in favour of pro with more ram. That was more important to me but your needs May favour the battery life?

They are a good computer. I haven't wanted anything else, oh and extended warranty from ms is awesome. Even the standard warranty, I had my power pack replaced because of cable wear, free of charge.

        • +1

A former work colleague of mine has one at his new job and he has just had to return it - it wouldn't return from sleep mode, would just be dead and would have to hard reboot, and it would do the same if it hibernated while connected to the official MS dock.

        • @MrFunSocks:
Yeah that is the biggest problem I have. Have to save work in case it does it. At time it does it daily, at times once a month.
It doesn't do it if screen is left on and it's locked.

        • just did a little review below you might want to check

        • I had the SP3 and whilst it was a good machine, boy did it heat up so easily. To the point I took it in and they told me that's normal! Not sure if they fixed that with the SP4. However, it was an i5 processor in a tiny frame. Gotta hand it to Microsoft for pulling this of.. Other than heat, great machine. One other gripe, 1 USB port is not enough no matter what usb dongle excuse you want to use.

    • -4

i have used these machines before and I think they are way over priced for what you get, and they are of very poor quality.

      • +1

What parts were poor in quality?

        • -3

battery life is poor, touch screen is not responsive at times(need to restart machine), it hangs constantly and just the overall look of unit looks cheap in comparison some other machines out there. I would never ever buy one but that just my opinion.

        • @dlakers3peat:
What would you recommend instead for the same processor, ram, weight, and touch screen with an integrated pen?

        • @dlakers3peat: can you show some examples of what's better? interested to know. cheers

      • +1

What makes you say they are very poor quality? I've heard nothing but good things from people who own them, and when I've had a look at them in store they seem alright.

        Edit: already answered above.

      • +5

Yours might have had issues, but the claim "they are of very poor quality" is clearly incorrect and foolish.

        • -3

thank you for that nice compliment.

After much research and back/forth i got a i7 pro 512/16gb just under a month ago from JB for the same price (actually $1.40 cheaper) by price matching the HN sale on at the same time. Don't forget you probably need the keyboard too (i got that for $160 instead of $200 or whatever it normally is). I'm coming from a long term macbook pro user and wanted a touchscreen component.

    The pros:
    - The pen is great. Touchscreen works great. Some apps are finicky but it's the best option right now if you want to run desktop apps and have touchscreen/pen. iPad pro seems to be the best touchscreen/pen combo right now but if it doesn't have the apps you need then thats why you get something like a surface.
    - Build quality is excellent. I can't really fault it except i already have a scratch on the back/aluminium. Get a case.
    - It has handled basically anything I've thrown at it pretty well, however note when it's doing something intensive the fans fire up quite loud (as noted below).
    - The kickstand works suprisingly well & is solidly built, although it is a bit awkward to use on your lap.
    - The charger is cool, it works kinda like the magsafe connector the apple unfortunately recently ditched. It also has an extra USB port in the power brick for charging, things? Would have been nice if this piped through as an full USB port though.
    - Built in microSD slot for future expansion?

    The cons:
    - Battery life kinda sucks compared to the MBP. Being so used to 9hours of productivity time away from power, it's hard to get used to surface pro's max of about 3 hours. Hot tip: learn to use the battery saver option more often.
    - Takes ages to charge. I can be using it and charging it for HOURS and it still wont have fully charged.
    - The fans fire up and get extremely loud when under load. A recent example was trying to sync a shitload of files to the cloud and it was crazy loud.
    - Only 1 USB port. However it handles my 7-port USB hub fine. No USB-C either if that's your thing (its not mine, yet).
    - There's some weird shit going on with my screen: certain apps make it flicker and ive even had overall flickering happening at 0% brightness. Other people seem to be having these issues, many report having to get the item replaced, sometimes multiple times, before it is fixed. Also the pen quite often double taps when I only meant to do one tap. Again, others have these issues and there appears to be no fix as yet.
    - Windows :/

Overall it's a great machine. It takes some getting used to and I'll need to throw some time into it to fully become a master at the pen for my creative stuff. I'd say i'm 70-80% happy.

    Please enjoy my unsolicited review.

    • maybe send for warranty repair? or get a brand new one…

  • What are the drawbacks of buying Surface Pro 4 from dwidigital vs buying it from JB ? I understand dwi had international version and no pen included, how ever what's the diff (besides DWI being cheaper)?

    • I bought local because Australian statutory warranty is 2 years. 1 with grey imports.

    • +1

I would say to get extended warranty from ms store in Sydney ( can buy it elsewhere just take it to store to get inspected). Would they honour an import? Need to ask them.

The extended warranty is amazingly good

      • +1

As much as the tightarse in me causes internal conflict, I will always buy my work PC with extended warranty.
I have a SP3 with extended warranty, in March this year the charging port started to fail while I was overseas and I lodged a warranty request online, was pretty simple but the turnaround would be roughly 10 days.

I rely on my surface for business and would not be able to survive 10 days without it so one afternoon I drove to the city (Sydney), parked my ute in a loading zone on Pitt St and went in the MS Store. I was back in my ute with a brand new SP3 (i7 instead of i5 too) before the 15 minute loading zone ticket had expired.

    • can we use amex with split payment ??

  • Will probably end up pulling the trigger and walking into JB this weekend to nab the i5 Surface Book.
Have been reading up on them for days now and everything seems really positive.
Also spoke to a work colleague who highly recommended getting one and he loves his.

    • Which config are you going for?

      • I went for the i5 8gb 128gb model..

I won't go into details but I ended up returning it the next day and am back on the hunt for a suitable work device

        • Considered XPS 13/15?

        • @sridhar: definitely looking at the xps 13 right now. I believe I read somewhere you can charge it via power bank and a usb-c cable

  • I am looking at a surface pro 4 for work

The note taking on screen looks cool - but ultimately all I need it for is being able to use online websites and microsoft word - and maybe watch movies on a plane. The purpose for me is to have something to be able to work with when travelling. The lap issue isn't a problem, nor is battery life.

Would the 15 4gb be sufficient?

Going to need to get the arc touch mouse and the keyboard cover and probably a case as well.

    • I think it would be sufficient so long as you don't open too many browser tabs. If you want to future proof it though, you should try to get 8gb ram.

  • +1

I checked the price of 256GB / i5 / 8GB Surface Pro 4 at Microsoft Store and it's just a dollar more. With 8% CR cashback, it will be cheaper to buy directly from MS.

    • +1

Plus you can get an additional 10% student discount if eligible. Looks like the microsoft store has a permanent 20% discount and hence the student discount is now stackable.

Edit: Student discount stackable only on the surface pro 4
