Curious at the differences between the new model vs the old:

Considering its $237 from Telstra Ebay with the 5% voucher:

New version is more of a downgrade in specs - half the Mpix (2x8Mpix vs 2x16Mpix on old version), half the vid resolutions and smaller batter but overall smaller size and easier to use because of the shape. The Megapixels in these cameras IS very important if you want to retain the detail and if you want to particularly zoom into any specific angle to view more. The newer is only better in the software with some extra features such as HDR.

I'd rather get the Telstra Previous model IMO. Cheaper by 100 bucks and better overall.

I've been watching all the impressions and reviews on youtube about the new gear 360 cam. Most of them said while the specs might be lower in some cases they can't really tell the difference in video quality. There are also a number of improvements for example better photo stitching, ease of use and better portability (it now fits in your pocket), and most importantly it is compatible with more devices including ios!

      • compatible with more devices including ios!

Smart samsung now they can charge more and still sell more.

I can't wait for the Apple i360 Camera, half the specs, double the price.

        • @tuzii:

LOL isn't all their products are like that

        • @tuzii:

I know you're trolling and OzBargain isn't the place for silly flamewars, but actually last year's iPhone significantly outperforms a Samsung Galaxy 8.

And prices for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are $1199 and $1349. Pretty much standard for flagship phones these days. The Pixel came out there too.

How about we just buy what we like and don't get religious about our choice of gadget?

Speaking of which, if you do pre-order an S8, you get free Gear VR headset (with the new VR motion controller), plus $50 of Oculus Store credit.

These items fit perfectly into the Gear 360 ecosystem. You can shoot stills / video on the Gear 360 and view it with the Gear VR.

        • @Crocfreefree:

I love that image </sarcasm>. Have seen it bandied about before. No mention of what the ratings are or mean, what benchmark - they are just a number. And the best bit - the Galaxy S8/+ doesn't even have a Snapdragon 830, it's the 835. The image is just a photoshop of nothing meaningful

      • It does matter when you do plain 360 photos. I have the LG 360 Camera (2x8Mpix) and it's a pretty neat toy to play with (although you end up forgetting about it after a few uses). The reason why the resolution actually is very important (along with the other factor, stitching accuracy) is that it needs to capture so much in comparison to a regular camera which only has a very narrow field of view. An 8Mpix shot on a normal camera is pretty nice quality but that is only a very small fraction of the entire 180 degrees (per sensor) up and down of the camera set. It is 8Mpix to be shared in the entire 180 degree field of view - so the clarity and details is lost massively.

The 16 Mpix makes up for this loss a bit by doubling the amount of pixels used to store definition across the 180 degrees. This is even more noticeable when you start viewing it in a VR headset whereby the pixels are enlarged to your eye being magnified and closer to your eye.

As far as Video is concerned - the movement action may take away some of the resolution problems - but dont expect great results if you want to zoom in on anything in particular during the videos.

  • curious to know the type of people who would buy this kind of camera for that price. seems to be a pricey novelty camera compared to a more practical action cam…

    • What kind of people? 3 legged people? People who like to shoot things.
This has 2 x 180° cameras allowing you to create vr style photos and videos. No traditional action camera does that without a 360 rig and multiple cameras - costing way more than this unit (10x!).

Landscape shots are the best on these cameras. Stick it on a tripod or somewhere and do a remote capture. Much better than a panoramic shot since you dont have to keep moving it to pan across a longer field of view. One click and its done. Photos are convertible from a 3D 360 view into conventional Pano shots too.

    • It is very much a novelty at this stage, yes, but Facebook is pushing it and actually have quite a good hosting platform for 360 images and videos, so it's possible it'll get more mainstream in the coming year. Maybe.

BTW.. these are also awesome peripherals to Drones / Quadcopters that can mount cameras. Fly it out with one mounted and then record the entire thing. Play it back on VR and you got yourself a pretty cool flying experience.

  • I thought of buying, but can't think of any reason to record 360… sigh… like the gear vr, cool idea, ozbargained it, i mean purchased it, used it once, and collected dust since…
