New model has a lower quality sensor and smaller battery though live streaming may be an important feature for some.

      • +5

Also the new one is compatible with Android 5.0+ and iOS 10+ devices, whereas for this one the app is restricted to "Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, Note5".

    • +3

thw new version has a smaller battery, no NFC, and takes photos with less detail and resolution 30 mpx vs 15 for new

What do people use these for, well obviously recording or photos but what circumstances?

I guess if you're on a safari you'd be able to do something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlOiXMvMaZo (meet the elephants - this video was taken with high end equipment costing thousands)

      A more realistic example is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joeu3b0FQF0

For the price I think it's a no brainer, and the new Samsung 360 looking like being almost double the price.

So i just spent 2 minutes watching that while sitting on the toilet and only figured in the last 10 seconds i could control the view by tilting my phone..lol

TLDR; I just watched mainly the camera itself for 2 minutes

      • in the comments of the first video it says it was shot with a GOPRO 360

        • I assumed they used the GoPro OMNI (US $4999) which uses an array of gopro camera's.

Noticed that there is a go pro fusion 360 that was announced a few days ago so that will be interesting to see how that works out for them.

Also on the IM360 corporate site there seems to be a 360 setup using gopros that would be lower priced than the OMNI (http://immersivemedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/hardwar…)

So you can look at the mantle peice and the fire at the same time eh?

      • or look at the mantle piece whilst stoking the fire?

  • Great price!
Got mine (this version) for $20 more 3 weeks ago.
I love it. Especially watching back through VR.
Puts you back in the moment.

  • Thanks OP got one. Was looking into getting a 360 camera to just test and play around. Great price.

Great price for a solid little 360 camera. Even if you end up rarely using it, it looks great on its included tripod — like a big eyeball, reminiscent of part of GLADoS from Portal…

I actually paid $550+ for mine a year ago, as I had it shipped direct from Korea before it was even out in Australia or the US.

As people above have mentioned, the upcoming new model which obsoletes this one (hence the clearance) actually has lower specs in some key areas. The older model holds it own well against 360 cameras which came after it, including the Nikon KeyMission 360.

Although it's really designed to work best if you have a Samsung phone (I used a Note 5, though I'm more into iPhone these days), it can in fact be used standalone, as long as you have a PC/Mac and you're prepared to remove the microSD card. (360 video is very much a PC thing because of the intense processing requirements.)

So it won't work well with an iphone and macbook? Damn…

Thanks for the helpful post though!

      • +7

        To clarify:

Standalone: camera shoots 2x 180 degree fisheye images side by side onto a FAT32 microSD card, .jpg for stills, .avi MPEG-4 at 30fps for video. If you have the experience and software tools to work with those, it's usable with no other Samsung items.

Tethered wirelessly to a supported Samsung phone: the Samsung Gear Manager app lets you control the camera and see through its viewfinder. You can snap 360 stills, start and stop the video, change modes, transfer images to/from the camera for uploading to 360 image sharing services, Facebook etc. This app isn't great and hasn't received many updates (hey, it's Samsung) but does do the job of a remote shutter and back in the day I upgraded my Android phone to a Note 5 specifically so I could run it.

Tethered wirelessly to any Android or iPhone phone: you can connect via Wi-Fi and run Google StreetView to capture 360 stills at timed intervals. Put the Gear 360 on a monopod, hold it above your head, and pretend you are a Google StreetView car! Works well.

Connected to a PC (or Mac in BootCamp / virtual emulation): the included licensed PC software (nothing to do with Samsung) can import the fisheye format videos and stitch and edit them into full 360 degree equirectangular videos as used in VR applications. The resulting videos can be uploaded to YouTube or Facebook and viewed in a GearVR, Oculus, Vive, Daydream, etc, (or just just by panning with a finger or mouse on a 2D screen). Working with 360 video can be slow and tedious depending on your motivation.

        Happy adventuring in 360 land!

    • What kind of things have you shot with your one?

  • SOLD OUT!

    • +1

Available direct from Telstra shop still for $250, no cashrewards or 5% off via ebay, but still a good deal.

      +1

  • Great deal, Thanks OP! i was lucky to grab one i guess before everyone woke up.

any good free apps for mac or windows for stitching the photos or videos together?

I guess the app won't work with an iPhone?

    • +1

Have a look at Google's StreetView app for iPhone. You can tether an iPhone to the Gear 360 and snap panospheres direct to it, no Samsung software required.

(When it comes out, it's possible someone might hack Samsung's presumably new (iPhone compatible Gear Manager to support the older hardware, but don't count on it.)

  • Thanks, just in time for snow trips!

  • They also have these headphones for $150:

    accessories.telstra.com.au/plantronics-backbeat-pro

Is this a good deal? Just wondering if the noise cancelling would be better than my QC20s.

    • Bose pretty much win at noise cancelling from what i have heard..

    • Is this version 1 or 2?

      • Looks like v1 to me.

        • Good price if it was version 2.
Not sure what improvements v2 has over 1.

modded APK to allow for "other" phone usage XDA Gear 360 Mod

    • non for iPhones :(

  • Is this 1st gen or 2nd gen?

    • It's the first Gen

      • Thanks Trent

  • Does anyone know who else sell this besides Telstra shop?

    • I think places like Kogan, Samsung store online & dick smith

  • thanks OP! bought 1 from the telstra store (no cash back) but oh well… :)

  • +1

its back in stock on there ebay store so you can get the extra 5% off

    • Yup. I squealed coz I thought Ebay was sold out and ended up buying on the Telstra website. Next day I found out it was back in stock on Ebay. /facepalm

  • I'd be all over this if there was an underwater housing. Samsung did apparently have one. But they're like hen's teeth.

    • Zip-lock bag ;)

  • I was gonna get this until I learnt of the lack of support for ios and mac. I'm actually thinking of getting the newer version instead. Does anyone know the price and release date?

  • +2

I swore I was never buying any Samsung product again after my dissapointment with the s6 Edge, s7 Edge and lack of ongoing support for Tizen based Gear 2 (now 'hacked' to run Android Wear, which is so much better).

I am glad that I reneged, as this has been fantastic so far.

I have the XDA modded Gear 360 APK running on my Moto Z Force, and it runs well for those who are worried about using the camera with non Samsung, non iOS phones. I've only been using it for 360 photos at the moment, so can't comment on video stitching yet. I also installed the 'Gear 360 (new)' app from the app store on my old s6 Edge and it works with a slightly better interface, so believe that Samsung and iOS phones with access to that app should work without issue with the older Gear 360.
