  • Thats a good price - i had to buy a crappy underpowered soldering iron over the weekend for emergency which cost me $25. This model is way better and worth more than $50 on its own so all the other stuff is a bonus!

How much for shipping to NSW?

  • +1

I got a 60W, heat adjustable soldering iron delivered for $11:

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.22253

    • not the same. this will last longer yours will last the same as the other things from DX.
specially if it's something that heats up to 400degrees!

    • +1 for DX. Btw, how long have you used it?

    • +2

great price for what it is, however the posted item is in a different class, and is far superior for these reasons:

      1. electrically isolated from mains (less likely to induce a current into your components)
      2. low voltage (if heating elements short to the iron tip, less likely to damage your components)
      3. temperature readout
      4. burn resistant cord, which is both a safety feature and an anti-annoyance feature. i loath the smell of accidentally burnt rubber
      5. advanced temperature control according to specs.

i would not hessitate buying this kit over the dx offers, as it'll save you lots of headaches in the future.

      • wow that dx deal is awesome for a backup iron, but lets be fair on the comparo, this offering is truly vastly superior for the reasons kimmik has already posted.

  • Would something like this be good enough for desoldering? I need to replace some capacitors…. I have an old DSE station but I can't get it to be able to desolder the damn things. Either I'm doing something wrong now, or the station I'm using just isn't powerful enough :(

    • Desoldering is a lot easier with solder wick. Those pads connected to ground or power plane can take a lot of heat though. Maybe try holding the iron there for more than a few seconds, and slide the solder wick in from the side instead of having the solder wick on top of the solder so you don't need to heat up both at the same time.

  • If your learning to solder wouldnt the cheap crappy one be a better less expensive way to start.

I have been soldering crap, for 20+ years and prefer the cheap crap ones, a good tradie doesnt blame the tools

    • for electrical work, cheap clunky ones will work fine, but electronic work will much benefit from a temp controlled, static free, low voltage iron, for which this is a pretty decent elcheapo version.

      '+' from me.

  • Great price when just the soldering iron sells regularly for $79.90 on that site. Sure, it's not a Weller, but it does have a digital temperature display. I'd be buying one if I either didn't have a soldering iron, or was in the trade as it would make a great backup, or unit to test.

  • cant see postage costs on your site. how much is postage to Perth ?

  • Depending on postage costs, I'm pretty sure I'll buy this. I also didn't know about this site, so I may be using it more often, of course that depends on how much and how long delivery takes.

  • I agree with the other comments here. This looks like a great deal to get a relatively good cheap soldering iron if youre starting out or just want a backup iron
But, it would be handy to know what the postage costs are without having to go through the entire checkout process…
