Forcing to Choose a new NBN Contract and Pay extra $44 a month for same plan I have on Cable

Hi, just wondering if anyone here has been told the same from Optus.

I am in a 90 superfast cable plan (a deal from ozbargain) which includes:
* Unlimited Internet
* Unlimited local/national calls
* Unlimited Mobile calls
* Unlimited 1300/1800
* Some International destinations free
* All Fetch TV channel packs
* Fastest Speed pack

Today they told me I have NBN on my street and I need to choose a new plan or be disconnected.

Their recommended plan is $80 and includes
* Unlimited internet
* Pay as you go calls:
— Pay As You Go call rates
— Local calls 30c per call
— Standard national calls 28c per min + 52c connection fee ($2.00 cap for calls up to 1 hour)
— Calls to Australian mobiles 28c per min + 52c connection fee ($2.00 cap for calls up to 1 hour)
— 13/1300 calls 35c per call
* One Fetch TV channel pack

To modify this to what I currently have now I would need to pay this extra:

  • Unlimited local/national (extra $5)
  • Unlimited Mobile (extra $5)
  • World Saver (extra $10)
  • Extra Fetch TV pack (extra $14)
  • Fastest Speed (extra $20)

That means I will need to pay an extra $80 + $5 + $5 + $10 + $14 + $20 = $134/month

Is this even legal? Has anyone on Optus Cable come across the same problem?

I don't mind moving to NBN just don't want to have to be paying extra $44 a month to have exactly what I have now.

  • why wouldnt it ? and there is already a speed boost in the 80$ plan , + another 20$ speed boost , that looks like 40$ you could reduce the price right there.

    do u still on contract? If so then optus need to keep everything

    • +1

      And if not on contract - switch!

    • Not in a contract anymore. I don't want to switch because it is a good deal. Have a look at the current deal they have on.. no where near in comparison.

      • +1

        if not on contract then both party can change, looks like it's time for you to switch.

      • But they don't want to offer the service arrangement anymore and they're under no obligation to either.

        • +2

          I mean to another ISP.

      • +1

        is a good deal

        FTFY - was a good deal

  • And why can't you choose another provider?

    I'm assuming what's happened is your area changed from being served only by Optus cable and ADSL presumably to being served by NBN cable where you can buy cable service from whoever offers services.

    • If I can find a better deal than what I am currently on then I would swtich

  • Today they told me I have NBN on my street…

    they actually explained this to you or you received a letter?

    I had the exact same issue - on cable and then NBN came

    they put me on a new plan with the same benefits for the same money- unlimited calls to local, national and mobile & unlimited data

    • They told me.. I called for another enquiry.. signing up to a mobile plan

    • How did they put you on the same benefit for same money… that's what I am asking for too.
      I have complained with TIO this arvo.

        some optus guy from the interwebz department rang me when the cable closing time was approaching and explained that they were putting me on the $90 unlimited entertainment package. i had, until that point been ignoring, been ignoring the letters from Optus (I had other things going on) and had been under the assumption from an Optus brochure that my internet/home phoneline would be extra expensive.

        they had to organise a guy to check my inside connection (i was on FTTP -or some similar acronym) . dude arrived and connected a box prior to the cable modem box - BAM , internet worked. then when the new NBN modem arrived I just hooked that up.

        for a week afterwards my landline (incoming) didn't work. I could make calls with no problem.

        I see no great increase in speed - actually it's pretty much the same.

      • This is a bit late seeing as you've already contacted them, but this isnt a TIO issue.

        You're not on contract anymore, so Optus arent obliged to provide you with a service.

        Unless they've said you have to change plans and can't cancel, or they've changed you additional fees, they haven't done anything dodgy. They've just said we arent offering this plan anymore, and offered you an alternative plan.

        You're free to decline and get your phone and internet service somewhere else. Just because other services arent as good, doesnt mean they're obliged to keep providing you the service you're on indefinitely.

        That said, what I'd do here is say you're happy to switch over to Optus NBN, providing they match your current contract. If they don't, say you'll be taking your business elsewhere. If you're lucky they'll say yes. If you're not then it's time to search for the best value plan again, much like you did when you first signed up for the plan you're on now.

  • I am on same plan depends on who you talk to I am currently getting switched over to nbn suppose to be switched over a month ago finalising tomorrow spokesperson told me a extra $10 dollars so all up $100 then further discounted it down to $95

    Thats unlimited Internet at 100/40
    Unlimited calls mobile/house
    Fetch with the goods and epl
    1300 numbers you get the rest

    • Maybe the people I talked to today are noobs since it's a public holiday.

    • Can you tell us what the plan is called that you gotten so other people who have to switch can attempt to get the same one.

        • I mean, can you tell us the name of the NBN plan that gets you pretty much the same thing as the $90 cable for $95 as you said above.

        • @cheapisgood:

          It's a continue of that plan there is no more or the new plans are no good

          If I was op I would try speaking to someone else if not change providers there are better deals out there

          Mind you I have been with them over 10 years so maybe loyalty comes into it

  • I had the same optus deal as you - $90 for the entertainment pack with fetch. (i also had a further 10% off for a mobile to the same household)

    optus called me some time in jan when they said NBN is ready - offered the exact same deal - however 50/20 speeds ($10/mth more if you wanted 100/40) and was offered 3 months free if i re-signed for another 24 months. I was however still within contract period.

    it actually took them 2 months after the technician came out for me to have nbn working do to some system issue.

    Afterwards, even though my speed is 50/20 it's pretty horrible at nighttime during peak hours (9/10pm). i barely get adsl speeds, lucky i didn't opt to increase speeds) Speedtest right now at 10.05pm is 24/5 to optus in east burwood (about 10km away). Sometimes it's less than 3/1.

    No point in advertising 100/40 or 50/20 speeds when it is unobtainable. I have never managed to get anywhere near 50/20 when i tested to local servers.

    Can't say that moving to another provider will help my cause as it depends on the subscription ratio, but i'll gather more stats and make a formal complaint. Hope to get some further credit

    • You're lucky to be getting 24/5 (or even 3/1) with Optus HFC NBN - I struggle to get 0.2mbs much of the time.

      I have a complaint in with the TIO, since Optus's only answer is to wait an unspecified time, because "NBN are doing work in the area".

      That's clearly rubbish, because neighbours on the same piece of cable in the same street are getting much better results with other ISPs.

  • Don't join , quit this mad cow company, it's slow and overpriced.

  • +1

    I'll keep you updated once the TIO gets back.
    Seems that Optus has already been in trouble. Maybe their sales boss is ordering dodgy sales techniques to their sales reps.
    Either way I have a grace period and won't be changing to this new more expensive plan. Have a read at this link provided by another ozbargain user:

  • Is Telstra doing the same?

    I don't want to lose my cable internet for the useless effing NBN. Just signed a 2 year deal.

    • its my understanding that as soon as the NBN is operational in an area the existing networks are marked for decommission, even the shitty FTTN is better then ADSL in general so theres no point keeping the old stuff running, when the nbn is complete in an area they send out letters saying such

      • But mine is through Foxtel cable into the house. Do they seriously stop the internet through the cable and force you to hook up new NBN equipment?

        It sounds ludicrous.

        • They disconnect your old Telstra cable modem and install a new NBN cable modem on the same physical cable.

          They then twiddle some bits on a computer somewhere, and your old Telstra cable connection stops working and your new NBN cable connection starts working (in theory anyway, sometimes it doesn't work out so easily, sigh).

          You can't use your old Telstra cable modem on the NBN.

        • @pjetson: FFS

          Better not be slower or cost more.

          Thanks for the explanation.

        • @Mr Gradgrind: Unfortunately, for at least some people, it is slower and does cost more. You can change to another provider with NBN cable though, so you might be able to find a better plan/deal.

        • @pjetson: And we're paying for this shit sandwich with our taxes…..extraordinary.

        • @Mr Gradgrind: No, you're not.

      • Well not really better if you're already getting the full 24Mb/s down via ADSL2+ and NBN is capped to 12Mb/s down….

  • As far as I am aware, the moment NBN is available at your address, you no longer have access to ADSL

    • +2

      That's not true. You don't have to change to NBN until your ISP tells you that they are withdrawing your non-NBN service.

      NBNco say this can be up to 18 months, but some ISP's like Optus are "forcing" people to move to NBN within weeks.

      • This is correct you don't have to and have a grace period of up to 18 months.
        Basically stay with your better service until they iron all the bugs and maybe nbn plans get more competitive.

    • As far as I am aware, the moment NBN is available at your address, you no longer have access to ADSL

      Maybe I read that wrong. The moment that NBN is available at your address, you can no longer sign up for a new ADSL service. Is that what you meant?

  • this is not surprising i'm sure pretty much all the ISPs will be using the end of life of the old services as a way to get customers on (real good) plans like yours off them and onto modern day (shittier all round) plans.

    your options are to take it, complain enough they give you all the extras for your old price (which they will put a time limit on im sure) or be angered by them and look for another deal elsewhere its been a long while since i've looked into bundles as they are almost universally rip offs but yours sounds alright, it also sounds like it would no longer exist in todays market

    • That's right is the best plan as far as I know. Don't want to change to other shittier plan.

  • +1

    My parents have just had NBN connected in their street and Telstra told them they have 18months to switch over from ADSL. Sounds like you are being bullied, stand your ground.

    • Will do. I have been happy with Optus so far, their tech support has been good too. Maybe change of management, can't handle the NBN upgrade and are getting greedy with new rip off plans.

  • Just started my nbn 3 days ago so far happy but have to call back to apply speedpack next week as my cable plan is still connected just done speed test and here is the outcome
