  • I have been thinking about something like that and got the email.

    Curious to know anyones thoughts?

It is only 720p video and 1 megapixel cameras. Honestly why bother.

You want at least 1080p and 3 megapixel POE. Anything less forget it. Even at 1080p you can have trouble making out number plates and faces - you will appreciate the extra res when you actually need it.

It doesnt specifically say it here, but the cameras are almost certainly 12 volt.

      You want power over Ethernet.

If you got this system you'd be disappointed you didn't get better fairly quickly.

OP has a HIKVision setup as do I. Look to EBAY or AliExpress for a bundle - and don't believe the BS about Australian versus overseas - thats just a crock made up by Australian sellers trying to maintain a high price…

If you want dome cameras I use these and recommend them -
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192098363265

Throw in an EBAY discount voucher and you can get a good deal. 4 megapixel, superior night vision, 1080p video.

      • can you tell me which kit you are using or point me to a similar kit.

        • +1

I didnt get a kit as I got an awesome deal on my DVR unit. I have already linked above to the cameras I use.

          I went for a HIKVision DS-7616-I2 with 6 x DS-2CD2342WD-I dome cameras and a 4TB hard disk.

16 ports is overkill, but they do an 8 port version too.

If you contact the sellers on EBAY and explain you want say a DVR and 4 cameras, they will do you a bundle price. Bear in mind too on EBAY they are paying 10%+ fees, so if you dont have an EBAY discount then talk to them about an offline deal.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter:

          Hi there,

Really interested in a setup similar to yours. I guess yours is the same camera as one in the link below :
          https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/DS-2CD2342WD-I-Engl…

Could you let me know what mm focus to go with ? This will be used external with two camera facing the front yard (14m width). Also, was it a better price for you in ebay ?

          Thanks in advance !

        • @sundeepguntu:

          I have 4 x 4mm and 2 x 2.8mm lens.

2.8mm gives you a whole front yard image, 4mm not quite wide enough in some situations, but 4mm good for closer view of stuff.

For those cameras you should be paying no more than $140 AUD each delivered if you are buying 4.

My EBAY link one does $145 each for 2 without hassling, and thats via EBAY.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter:

Thanks for your help. I will look into the link you provided.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: Thanks for your input! It really is valuable! I am just building a house, do these come with youre recommendation of POE? I was thinking i could wire the house for Ethernet and then just install these at the front of the house etc…
Im not really sure who else to turn too - a local recommended a package that was JUST over $3k!!

@XCelR8: There are better cameras but bang for back the HIK EXIR domes are good.

Any electrician can run the ethernet if you can't do it.

You want probably one at the front door and one or two covering the front yard - perhaps the back the same.

The higher they are, the more the camera will get in picture. 2.8mm will have a less zoomed in view. 4mm for door is good.

      • I concur, HIKVISION is reliable and value for money and POE is the way to go.

  • I was talking to one of the supplier about this one. seems to be cheapest price ever for SWANN. I had been quoted $550 the other day.

This set was much better value IMO

  • For those running a HIKVISION setup, can you please advise on what your using in terms of parts and total costs involved?

I see this brand get a lot of praise but these kits appear a bit more user friendly to setup for those that are not tech savy and are on a budget. I have no experience with IP cameras and have a basic understanding of networks but when I look into the cost of the cameras, switch, cables etc….I get the impression that it's going to be costly and time consuming. Happy to hear opinions/advice.

      I went for a HIKVision DS-7616-I2 with 6 x DS-2CD2342WD-I dome cameras and a 4TB hard disk.

Cabling I got done professionally, wasn't cheap but its a one-off cost.

DVR is exceptionally easy to use - plug in the ethernet cables, 30 seconds later you have a picture.

It is a lot more money than $399 - but its a hell of a lot better. Look for a 4 port or 8 port DVR depending on your number of cameras needed.

12 volt cameras are going to be a lot more expensive to install and harder to install in nearly every situation.

In the end you want decent video quality (1080p minimum) otherwise when you have an issue you are just wasting your time as the picture will be fuzzy and you wont make out faces and license plates.

      • I use a Synology DS415+ Diskstation 4Bay NAS Server for the DVR. Which i use also for storing movies and running other servers like plex.

Also have the Hikvision cameras, but i bought wireless so no cabling needed they work really well.

        • i bought wireless so no cabling needed they work really well.

You still need power source to power them. So definitely need some cabling unless you are using Netgear Arlo with batteries.

        • Yeah true… You need to power them, i just plug them into a power point using a TP-Link TL-POE150S PoE Injector. Atleast with wireless u dont have to run cables all the way to the DVR.

I just added to comment for people who want to do more than run 4 camera's. Its another option.

        • @Damned: Again, POE injector are good, but not great. Nothing beats cables…

    • These cameras for Swann are also made by HIKVision. I understand they are old, but normal HIKVision 6 camera setup comes out to be around 2k including fitting which is way over the current ones. Hardware alone is around 1.2k.
I also have 4MP HIK cameras and they look great. but at night, its ok. I used PC and was a bit complicated to setup on PC and mobiles. Night vision is ok and not great with 4 Mp ones. That is the time you need cameras the most.

So my suggestion is that these kits are good for basic home users and if owner adds some sensor lights near cameras so when any person is approaching, they glow and you get better picture compared to IR images.
This can be a good solution for basic home user taken cameras are IP cameras. You can always upgrade them and the NVR/DVR in future.

    • I got 5 x DS-2CD2345-I 4MP cameras and a 7608NI NVR to run/record them ($1000 all up on aliexpress singles day). Extremely easy to install. bought a box of 330m CAT6 cable for $80(ish) and a termination kit off ebay for $12 which included 100 plugs. Just needed to get a sparky to install the GPO where I wanted the NVR. Run all the cat6 myself, neatly in the roofspace. Avoid cat6 getting too close to any power cables and purchase some clips to run them along wood structure although this added neatness is not necessary, you can just throw the cat6 through the roofspace. Camera quality is excellent, great app to access remotely. I have also installed the same kit with 7 cameras for a friend. I highly recommend Hikvision. You are right, setup can be a bit daunting however it is really simple once you understand what is going on, not really any different to setting up any other network device. Camera placement and lens choice is of great importance and you will need to plan correctly.

  • Can anybody recommend a decent a HIKVision kit on Ebay using 2.4mp cameras for under $600. Preferably with 4 or more cameras and at least 8 channels. There seem to be a few on ebay but not sure which is good value for money.

A 3mp-4mp camera setup using 4 or more cameras is a out of my budget.
