Just be aware this is an SMR drive intended for backups - writing big slow contiguous jobs to disk and not constant read/writes of random sectors.

      Latest updates suggest the following:

Update - 10/21/2016: The drive uses platters that operate partly in PMR mode and partly in SMR, along with multi-tier caching (MTC) which includes DRAM and flash - The efficiency of MTC ensures that an empty drive maintains as much consistency as a PMR drive even under heavy traffic

I've never really noted much difference when compared to other 5400 drives tbh.

    • Thanks for that, not a fan of SMR in the slightest. Do we know if a PMR 2.5" 4TB disk exists?

  • Why not just get the 5TB one posted recently?

  • good price. i got the same unit unfortunately dropped on the floor and HDD died. a bit sad as I dropped my WD several times with no problems

To quote Oscar Wilde, "To drop one hard drive may be regarded as a misfortune; to drop both looks like carelessness"

    • HDDs are super fragile. It's not bad luck that your seagate died after a drop, it's just good luck that the WD didn't :P Be more careful with them. SSDs on the other hand can take a good ol' beating

  • SMR PMR pft
How much performance do you need for a media drive for your Android TV?
I think this is the best price ever for a 4TB 2.5" portable drive

    • This has nothing to do with performance and more to do with drives wearing out faster, due to the odd design of SMR.

    • I think this is the best price ever for a 4TB 2.5" portable drive

Cheaper last July I bought 2 delivered for $209 USD which worked out at about about $138 AUD each

So how do I open the referral link from the Amazon App(Android) itself ?

I've had several of these drives over the years, and most of them failed prematurely. I've got one that is still happily going on, but I prefer to buy other brands now.

    • I've got several (i.e. around 10) portables from Seagate, WD, Iomega and Transcend. Sizes range from 1TB to 3TB. All working fine, I stick to the major brands these days but realistically they have all been fine.

    • Edit: I'm only talking Seagate. I've had to return two under warranty and one I simply didn't follow up.

  • Using the Fast version of this drive, which is fantastic on consoles… given the fast version uses 2x 2TB drives in raid 0, no chance I will use it as a "backup" device… but great on consoles.. currently using it on the XBox One S

  • Any longterm tests using SMR? Seems like random writes are out of the question. But for media seems perfect?
