  • looks like a nice tab and been on the lookout for a 10' decent reviews on amazon .. i have $300 HN vouchers from amex deal - looks like HN have a price promise .. reckon they'll price match ?

    • JB they would no probs.

      • -1

Depends, a lot of the time JB use some bs cost price or manager's discretion excuse.

        • Sure, but he is matching at HN not JB

        • @Expon:

HN have pricematched - could someone confirm its the same model as descriptions are slightly different - and their price is $100 cheaper.

With the $300 HN vouchers i Got for $150 (amex deal) - this would be a total cost of $289 - a good purchase for that price ??

          thanks.

          @Expon:

thats what i thought - thanks mate - bought it :)

        • @droodle:

Awesome. Looks like a nice unit and cheap to boot. Even better with those vouchers. I'd be curious to see how you find it in a few weeks if you remember.

        • @Expon:

will check back in a few weeks .. now need to find a case …

  • Xiaomi max / redmi note 3 pro spec with large screen, I believe Snapdragon 652 can only run on 6 core at a time due to heat and power consumption.

    • those two phones only have snapdragon 650, only variants of mi max have snapdragon 652. don't know where you got that core information, does it matter when it comes to raw performance? it's still a great processor. i have both the mi max and redmi note 3

The only downside is update for this device will be non existstance.

is andriod even good as a tablet?

      • If your going to say that! I would question IOS as well. All have their merits depending on what your needs are. I prefer Android as it's more customisable compared to IOS's simplicity.

        • +2

I would politely disagree…the number and quality of proper tablet-optimised apps available on iOS leaves the Android tablet apps for dead.

        • @twister292: Fair enough. I agree IOS would be highly optimised for apps compared to android tablets. I still prefer android due to the customisable options without jailbreak.

Unfortunately, Android isn't a very good tablet platform. And I say that having used an iPad Air 2 at work, 2 Samsung tabs (Tab S 10.5 and Tab S2), and a Surface 3, a Surface Pro 3 and a Surface Pro 4.

Android itself is simply not optimised for tablets as much as it should be. Samsung gets around it with their own customisation, but the lack of proper tablet-optimised apps is a real sticking point. Most apps will simply stretch the phone UI to the tablet screen…some don't even bother rotating to landscape!

Hardware on the Android side is good. Unfortunately tablet apps is a real problem.

        • I don't really mind andriod for the ease of use for kids and the flexibility to customise it as I please. Given you own tab S2, what's your opinion if it? I am considering either tab S2 or this Lenovo device. Not quite sure which to get…

        • @HL2: I have a 10" tab S2. It will be my last samsung tablet/phone. Battery is awful. Even when I plug it in to charge overnight it randomly turns on the screen and starts burning up that battery again.

        • @HL2:

The Tab S2 was a loaner while my Tab S 10.5 was being repaired by Telstra (home button stopped working)…battery life was OK at best.

The biggest issue across all the Android tablets I've tried to date (including my sister's sony Z2 tablet) is more the software than the hardware…tablet optimised apps or rather the lack of them.

    • It is also significantly heavier at 637g than the tab s2 (389g) or the zenpad 3s 10 (410g). The reason is because of the relatively large battery.

      • The large battery is a plus. Good for long trips like this Easter or coming Anzac break. Kids will be occupied during the long drives with some entertainment in the back seat.

    Best tablets surface pro>iPad>Android tablets

    • +2

It depends entirely in what you are using it for. For example, an iPad is completely ill suited for what I use a tablet for, as a larger screen for looking at photos from micro sd. The surface is also probably the least kid friendly of the 3.

      Horses for courses.

      • That's true, don't have kids so that's probably why I like the surface

For those travelling overseas, after TRS rebate price reduces to exactly $400.

Considering this to replace my older IPS screen Huawei Android 7" ($29 from Coles!) which will live out its days in my car dash. Have a Win10 tablet that just doesn't get much use. Prefer Android for everyday use & viewing movies - maybe it's just what I'm used to.

    • Can i claim trs if the box is open and the device was used before departing Australia within the 60 days period? Don't see it mentioned on the website.

      • +1

        Yes.

      • +1

Yes. Claimed TRS on headphones last year and just had them around my neck when I had my claim processed.

      • As long as you can show you are taking the product out of Oz within 60 days of purchase - you don't need to take any packaging.

        But I'm a TRS virgin.

        • Nice! It will diffinitely be put to good use.

        • +1

          That's what I was thinking.
Flying to Japan again in a week, for 4 weeks. Took old 7" Android on previous longer trips.

Maybe time for a $400 upgrade.
But won't fit in my travel pants pockets like the 7", which was handy as travelling with only carry-on. Plus its twice the weight, but probably many times the pleasure.

Tempting. Popping down to local JB.
          Thanks for the deal😯

FYI - https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/ht501098 found this via lenovo website. Looks like this device may remain at android 6.01.

  • My local JB closes today, check before you go.

  • nice find… thanks op… Just got one for our 7 year old… great price for the high spec tablet… still in-store at Casuarina store…

    • Did you negotiate on the price further lower ?

      • No, as this was the cheapest i could find… HN refused to price match saying JB Berrimah is sold out… luckily got it in Casuarina store…

  • 637g weight. quite heavy for holding in one hand.

  • The deal expires today fyi

  • wtf, I was at JB earlier and that wasn't their displayed price :/ Bought one just then anyways :D now just to wait for the post.
Finally upgrading from my aged Ipad Gen 4

    • +1

Same with my local JB hifi. But there was a star sticker adjacent to the display unit to suggest the sale $160 off. Not very clear but that's how I do found out the deal expired today

  • Now sitting @ $479 anyone still keen - there are various ROMs available for this tab the latest being Nougat based on LinageOS

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet/development…

I'll prob keep as is .. but there was a few peeps above that had concerns regarding future proofing.
