  • Partially on topic, hijack. (I voted up to say sorry!)

I have a friend moving to Australia who needs a phone plan, I'm thinking of the 10GB Optus one, is there a way I can sign her up to this cheap?
Like can I buy a pre-paid $30 card for $10 or something (one of those cool deals?) and somehow use the $30 of credit against that specific plan?

How can I save a little bit more? Long term I'm guessing she'll be sticking with this one.

Unless someone knows an 8GB or higher plan in the $30 range.

Check out these plans https://www.jeenee.org.au/products/data-sims/ https://www.jeenee.org.au/products/sim-packs/ on Optus 4G network. Unless you are after long expiry. There have been some good Vodafone plans with generous data and low price.

      • I actually meant, more that if I want the Optus plan, how can I save money off the initial month?

        • officially no, as it's prepaid vs postpaid.

there's a small chance you could find an obliging customer rep who will give you the equivilent credit.

        • @supabrudda: Ahh makes sense, ok.

I'll keep my eye out, I kinda wanna do prepaid for her for a month or two, just to see if she's happy with the signal quality.
          Cheers

          @hamwhisperer:
Optus prepaid sims are often available at half price or less during sales. You can also try out the $1 Kogan prepaid sim linked in a comment below.

Good call on trying out prepaid first, it is usually a bad idea to commit to a 12 month contract from the get go.

You can start by getting Kogan Mobile for $1. Comes with unlimited calls, unlimited sms and 14 GB data, for 30 days.

      Link here

      • More on kogan's prepaid offer here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293705

The extra large prepaid option is equivalent to $30.49 for 14GB per month if you pay for a year upfront. Kogan uses the Vodafone network and they will even deliver a trifit sim to your doorstep for free. Both locks you in for 12 months, and imo the Kogan plan offers far better value than Optus' offer of $40 for 10GB per month.

      • Hey bill, do you know if it's possible for me to activate a new kogan sim I already have which has no credit, then but this $1 voucher and topup?

        • Yes, I've doing it for two months now. Just activate a new kogan sim with the $1 voucher.

        • @billevans: thanks mate, it worked just did it

  • Voda PAYG Plus is 10 bucks for a year. Aldi is 15 for a year.

    • +9

You can actually get Aldi for $5 a year. $5 starter pack in store gets you PAYG with one year expiery.

      • not bad

Good call, I'd recommend Aldi - good service at a great price.

      • +2

The really great thing about Aldi is that you can stick with PAYG with 365 day expiry and buy value packs from $15-$45/month which can be changed on month-month basis according to your expected useage. I personally save a fortune as I travel overseas frequently (roaming is available but I only use it for receiving SMS and keeping my iOS iMessage/FaceTime services alive) I buy the pack when home and mix and match according to my demand. When I am away, the charges are zero.

    • amaysim is $10 per year.

      • Anaheim on postpaid as you go is indefinite.

      • -1

Amaysim had 90 day expiry on PAYG last time I checked

        • +2

Your info is out of date, it's 365 days now. Source: I'm with Amaysim.

But I endorse the Aldimobile recommendations too.

  • $40 prepaid starter kit (includes $40 credits) is on special until 04/04 for only $20.

  • Thanks Op!

    Absolutely HORRIBLE suggestion.
Aldi mobile PAYG is 80% cheaper and comes with 365 day expiry plus runs on Telstra's wholesale network.
I see that most of the comments already here agree with what I'm saying but just thought I would spell out all the reasons why Aldi is far superior to the posted offer

    • What are their ongoing data costs.

      • Calls 12c per min
        SMS 12c each
Data 5c per MB (measured per KB)

    • Absolutely agree. Well said!

  • Optus have now extended this offer until 5 June.
