How much does it cost to run all these pointless rebates and discounts? How about pricing registration and CTP at reasonable prices for all.

      pointless rebates

I suppose that depends if you're an apprentice or not :)

It's good because apprentices don't get paid very much and usually require a car.

Where do you draw the line? Unemployed people get the same discount? What about low income people? Those that work part time?

        • Unemployed people get Centrelink benefits, and if they have a health care card they get a discount on vehicle registration also.

Part-time workers might also be eligible to a low income health care card which gives them a discount on vehicle registration (about $200-$300 off).

Apprentices get paid under minimum wage, so it's not just "low income", it's even less.

Our government already has facilities in place to assist low income citizens who actually can't afford basics such as vehicle registration.

I can't believe people are leaving negative comments on this. Apprentices aren't paid much and we need the next generation to be trained in the trades. It is not like apprentices can take public transport and they probably don't earn enough to make tax deductions worthwhile. To the people who are complaining, how much more are you paid than an apprentice - twice as much, three times as much? These people are trying to become productive tax payers and we are giving them a bit of assistance to get there whilst they are learning. Grow up and learn to share.

They're not negative comments, my point is how much does it cost to run these schemes with all the checks and the rubbish that goes along with this. A better system would see the costs to everyone reduced.

What about students? They don't get very much money whilst they are training so why not apply this to students as well?

If apprentices are not paid enough that is an issue that should be resolved elsewhere.

What a load of rubbish, you think it's productive hiring people to administer pointless rebates that drive up the costs for everyone else! To administer this probably requires around 8-10 staff so there is a cost of a few million added to everyone's rego. Shutdown all these rebates and associated rubbish and all of a sudden you have more affordable registration for all.

Your comments indicate we should have no Government at all. Why bother with all that pesky gathering taxes, building roads, running hospitals - after all they all involve administrators - let anarchy run free and people can die in the streets.

Given there is already an infrastructure for gathering Vehicle registration I don't think it would take much extra effort to setup a scheme whereby the reductions can be made, it only involves a couple of extra questions and, maybe, a reference to the tax office.

Here is a link to the NSW registration costs and concessions - given what is already in place this will hardly make a dint on administering the scheme.

I would much rather pay the extra for my registration and allow someone who needs it a rebate; particularly as the apprentice needs to the car to get to work.

"What about students? They don't get very much money whilst they are training so why not apply this to students as well?"
Well students already get cheaper public transport - and most education places have ready access to public transport - they also don't have to cart tools, etc around with them.

An investment in getting Apprenctices trained is a long term benefit to Australians - if you put too much burden on the employers they will cease to employ apprentices and we will all be the losers.

Society is full of people who are rorting the systems to avoid paying the taxes they should be. The people with the high paid tax lawyers and the International companies that use tax havens should be the ones we go after, and hard. Bring in overseas investment charges for housing, and stop people using negative gearing to build up housing portfolios. It would probably take a couple of minutes to save the money that this rebate will cost.

      • If you are truely struggling to pay the full price, you can apply for Centrelink benefits and/or a low income health care card.

Students do get it tough unfortunately, but they don't require a reliable vehicle to transport tools/machinery, and can usually utilise public transport. They are also eligible for fortnightly Centrelink payments if they earn under the threshold. Students also can get a low income health care card which gets them $200-$300 off vehicle registration anyway.

Welfare is a good thing that helps people who need the assistance.

  • Wow, they usually don't offer discounts on the TAC charge.

    Nice one
