  • How does this work of you already have an etag with an existing toll provider? I'm in Melbourne and have a CityLink account, can I just swap the tags over so the roam account gets debited instead?

    • +1

My understanding they are different providers. Im not sure which provider im with so I might miss out :(

Warning to users have multiple toll accounts(etag or not), you may be charged twice sometime by your etag company and the original operator of the tollway.
I had a breeze (etag) and citilink account before, I was charged couple of times by both companies for using the same trips on citilink. citilink charged me usage fees and recognition fee even when I already paid to the etag company. I only noticed when my $30 citilink deposit depleted and my credit card on the account expired,so they issued me a payment notice by mail. Even after I explained to them it was not my fault, I have to pay off the $5 debt before I can cancel the citilink account.

So maybe not a good idea if have too many accounts, especially when you have some deposit inside and you forget to pay much attention to them. When come to ripping off their customers, the companies will take every chance they can.

      • +1

better changing registered vehicle in one account into non-existent number plate, change back when you need to so you won't be stung twice

  • +11

Minimum $50 needs to be transferred to eTag when signing up

  • +5

    For those wondering "selected retailers"…
    https://www.giftpay.com/business/egifts.aspx

  • +5

$40 upfront payment refundable upon etag return

  • Cheers, was planning on sign up for my first one in the near future.

  • +1

Yep. $40 security deposit killed it for me.

    • +4

Why not choose the $0.90 Monthly fee and return as soon as you've activated the GC?

  • +2

Any deals for those who hardly ever use etags - eg. free tag and low to no deposit and no account fees (I'm being hopeful!)

    • +1

not going to happen with a free / no deposit tag - they are in it for the $$ not a charity
no such thing as a free lunch
$40 deposit is there to cover the loss / theft of the tag / non return
Although in Brisbane we don't pay a deposit on the toll units - not when I signed up anyway

      • Its their way of recovering cost + profit of providing a tag to use THEIR service.

Lets be realistic.. how many people end up returning their tag and closing the account? Less than those who keep it - profit

        • I have been refunded for returning my old flow toll account pass
when GoVIA bought them out it was given to me as a 43 dollar credit on my account
They even paid for the return satchel, wasn't any skin off my nose and I was 43 dollars better

          You're right though
People who aren't smart enough to return the pass or aren't savvy enough will always lose out
          Thats just how business works

      • +1

Pretty sure Breeze (now Eastlink) fits this description (or at least did when I signed up). No deposit, no fees, but had to put on at least $40 credit I think.

        • go via is much better, minimum credit is around $20.

    • +2

Look at GoVia. They are QLD based, but say they work on all toll roads in Australia. Last I looked they had no deposit, no compulsory topup.

      • +3

Thanks for mentioning this - looks like they have a $25 initial load requirement but no deposit/payment for the tag.

        • +3

          Anyone using them in NSW?

      • +2

Does GoVia charge a surcharge for topping up via credit card?

        • +4

Auto topup, no. Manual topup, yes.

        • +1

          @Kyanar: what's the surcharge?

        • +1

          @sween64: Top-up options
You have the choice of topping up either automatically (free) or manually ($1.17 per top-up)

      • This is nice product. Like video account except "additional video matching fee per toll point will apply" which is $0.47, no need to install anything, no trouble to remove anything (when changing car) :)

  • Should put NSW in title

    • +1

why, it says "travel on any toll road in Australia"

      • thats correct, toll providers pass on fees to each other anyway, it used to be a mess in Brisbane but GoVia basically look after everyone since they got rid of Flow Toll

Pretty much all one system, the cost from the tunnel / road / bridge is passed on to your provider, either with % fees or just the standard toll charge if they are a multi-state pass.

        • I also live in Brisbane. So does this mean i still only pay the advertised toll rate or more because its not GoVia?

        • @Riceboy:

Nope you only pay the standard toll rates up here mate
provided you brought your flow account across etc
its all ONE company now for toll billing
so even if your toll tag says Roam / Flow I am 100% certain you just pay the standard signed rates now

  • +5

note you will need to pay $90
    $50.00 Opening credit
    $40.00 e-TAG deposit - refundable.

oh putting the $50 credit holding me off

    • +1

Dont all tags have a deposit and minimum credit

      • +1

Yeah but RMS has $20 I think. I don't use tolls a lot but I just found even this $50 is refundable after you cancel your account. So I guess nothing to loss here.

        • +1

          RMS was $40 for me

        • @twig: me too

        • +1

@CandyMan: Does the credit have an expiry. I dont mind the upfront payment as long as i can get it back. But i only use Tolls once or twice a yeah. $50 will last a few years for me.

        • @twig: I paid only $20 couple of years ago when I opened my account

        • @dragong87: they said it was refundable at the time

      • +3

Eastlink in vic doesn't need a security deposit. Atleast I didn't pay one.

  • +1

I got rid of my Roam Express tag when they started charging me fees when they topped up my account from my linked credit card.

Never going back to greedy companies like this.

    • +1

Who are you using that doesn't charge credit card fees?

E-Toll (run by NSW Roads and Maritime Services) introduced a credit card surcharge recently, but from what I've seen they still have the fewest fees.

      • govia (Transurban Queensland) doesn't charge a credit card surcharge when auto topup is used. Roam Express (Transurban NSW) does apparently.

  • +1

I always forget there's such things as road tolls #anotherdayinwa

  • +2

Can anyone can comment on their fees?

I am currently using the rta etag.

    Their fees are:

    Initial deposit: 20/40
    Min balance: 40 (infrequent user)
    Min top up: 40
Credit card surcharge: yes (can't remember the %)

Anyone knows a better tag to use?

  • Govia is the better one if you want no upfront fees with the pass etc
Provided you set auto topup they're one of the better companies

I think you'll find all companies pass on the % of fees by credit card topups to cover their transaction fees

You would think though in Queensland the Logan MWY would be free by now, its well and truly been paid for 10x over by the tax payers up here

  • Should the minimum deposit be added to the title?

  • +1

    So someone please enlighten me.

I already have GoVia, which I never use but no issues there.

If I want to grab the $50 gift car here what is the best option?

Sign up roam express, top-up $50 and pay $40 for e-tag and once you receive the $50 gift card cancel it and get $50+40 back, is that possible?

  • Just to clear up some points:

    1. I will need to pay $90 ($50.00 Opening credit, and $40.00 refundable eTag deposit).
    2. The gift card is for a random store, it's not $50 eTag credit?

    Ta

    • -2
      1. Yes. But expect a battle to get a refund of your opening top up.
      2. No, it's a Giftpay e-card that works at a very limited number of retailers (Event Cinemas, Dominos, and I think Woolies are the only ones you're likely to care about), and expires in a piddly 3 months.
      • +1

Where did u get the 3 month expiry from? I saw this on the gift website:

        Do GiftPay eGifts expire?
Each eGift is valid for up to 36 months (3 years) after the delivery date. When a gift recipient makes a selects how they will redeem their gift by choosing a participating merchant's egift card or voucher, the validity of that portion of the eGift Card will change to a shorter period.

      • +1

Looks like a pretty decent selection to me?
        https://www.giftpay.com/business/egifts.aspx

add to your list: Coles, Myer, JB HiFi, Supercheap Auto, etc.

  • Any surcharge for topping up via credit card?

    • .42%

  • -1

Any free candy with the deal

    • Redeem here for $50 worth of candy :)

  • How does the tag look like? i have been using the big and bulky etag from rta for many years and want to "upgrade" it to a smallish etag.

  • +1

    My 5 cents
    1. Roam Express looks very good if you have 1 car. Then deposit is the same with RTA E-toll.
But if you have 2-3 vehicles in the family, RTA waves the extra deposits (so, it is same $40 in total) vs. $80/120 with Roam Express.

    1. GoVia looks very promising, but I can't find any note about Sydney M5 cashback.
I assume you can't claim it with GoVia (correct me if I am wrong).
  • Thanks for all the info peeps, free dosh always appreciated.
Considering how much money I've paid over the years into tolls that didn't do that much for what they cost, I'll call this a rebate.

  • Called GoVia and they said they don't accept NSW customers on the phone. Anyone managed to sign up with GoVia??

  • Dont do it.
I signed up last time, never saw the money. Account went to -$10 they sent it to a debt collector….

    • terrible feedback

      http://www.productreview.com.au/p/roam-express.html

      "
Extremely rude overseas staff that are very very unhelpful, I've been hung up on 5 times just trying to cancel my account they refuse to do it.
I do not use toll roads and they are still deducting money from my account.
      "

      • Is it a big surprise to you that a toll company has bad feedback from it's customers?

  • +2
