That is because the WAN port is the ADSL-2 Router that is built in. Of course it wont work. You need to get a general router with a WAN port instead of this.
You need a VDSL capable modem for FTTN
@bchliu
I think what you are referring to is for FTTP.
You can use port #4 as WAN port if you want to use it as a router only. For FTTN or FTTB, you need VDSL modem. But this product has ADSL modem only
oops.. sorry.. I was referring to FTTP.. But yeah, it is an ADSL-2 modem only..
(Only true NBN is FTTP.. FTTN is a joke).I have no problem with FTTN from MyRepublic always 80/40.
@superforever: And that will be the max speed you'll ever get whereas FTTP can eventually get 1000/400 and beyond. Not to mention the speed won't turn to crap when it rains when you consider the condition of half of Telstra's ancient copper.
FTTP can eventually get 1000/400 and beyond.
I understand but from what I see how the government put in NBN I think we may have to wait 10 years for us to get to that speed :p
Actually if you are in an FTTP area you can already get 1000/400Mbps its just not advertised as it makes FTTN look bad. Its also priced very high for the same reason.
Avalible in 2013:
http://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco/media-releases/201…@superforever: Not really. It wont take much time to get Gigabit speeds into the homes with FTTP since many other countries already have this as a service already (Most Asian countries can get it for <$150 a month). At the end of the day, Fibre is Fibre - when you have it terminating at the premise, it has enormous potential of ramping up to more than gigabit speeds considering you can basically Wavelength-multiplexing different signals down the same fibre for even more bandwidth.
@superforever: 10x10 you mean? It's been 10 year since Rudd's announcement and I still have to wait another year for NBN.
It is possible here, we cannot compare our Internet with Asian countries lol
@Cyberninja: Yes.. VDSL is for NBN if you are on FTTN.
The Harvey's link for the D-Link Viper does say it is NBN ready (click on the specifications), so it should have VDSL compatibility in it.
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/nbn_faq@bchliu: Thanks. Can't find if it has a VOIP port.
@Cyberninja: I doubt it does. What do you mean by a VOIP port BTW? as in a dedicated RJ-11 port that you can stick an analogue handset into? or a specific RJ-45 port that is VLANed off somehow? The former is getting pretty rare as the functionality is now with dedicated VOIP handsets that does it.
@bchliu: with VoIP port, you won't need a dedicated landline connection. So, much cheaper.
Pretty sure is ADSL only and the nbn ready statement was when FTTN didn't exist as this is an old product.
From the product page
NBN/UFB Ready - Configure LAN Port 4 as a WAN port with VLAN Tagging
FWIW I have FTTP NBN and use this router's WAN port.
Was on TPG ADSL2 and then upgraded to NBN when the FTTP came in.From memory you can set which port is the WAN port in the settings.
Great modem router. Had this one for maybe three years now and i think i even got it from wireless 1 too.
Hardly ever need to reboot it as it's fairly stable.
Only concern is that antennae are all internal so you don't get that same placebo effect of performance compared to those routers with 4-6 external antennae.
Will this work with a hybrid fibre coaxial NBN connection?
Only bridged to a HFC modem.
Yes. The NBN HFC NTD os a HFC modem, so it provides a LAN port on the back that you can connect to the WAN port of this device.
However you don't need a modem/router combo, you could just get a router which is often cheaper.
you can use it as Lan hub/switch, wifi extension. pretty good value.
How is this compared to Billion 7800VDPX?
billion is history now, 7800 series only offer wireless n
But how does it compare modem / performance / benefits wise?
Understand that however recently my asus dsl-rt68u was having very flaky dsl performance and sustained 7Mbit but with billion 7800 I have resurrected, I can maintain an impressive 10mbit. This is on TPG dslam. So question is, will this adsl router perform better especially in the adsl field? Can the SNR be tweaked? Cheers.
not sure about your dslam, but last time my ADSL line had the problem, changing modem didn't solve the issue, billion couldn't make it any faster than the dlink wireless g modem. Don't listen to those whirlpoolian maniac, rather live with it until the day NBN come to your 'burb.
@lgacb08:That nbn dream, it will be planned available… Jan-Jun 2019
Watch out if you use wake-on-LAN a lot, for some reason there's no way to configure this one to permanently save a route to the PC you want to reach. You can set a record manually with telnet/SSH but this vanishes after a reboot. Solid device apart from that though, I paid $60 more a couple of years ago and I'm happy with it.
WTH is a cloud modem router?
It's wanky marketing speak for remote management.
Netgear modems !!! Dlink = junk
I'm still using a D-Link DSL-502t which is ~12 years old and still works fine. I wouldn't call that junk…
Well well arnt you lucky. Had one for less than a year and kaputz. Netgear or nuffin
****PLEASE NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 'FTTN' NBN CONNECTIONS****
