Wow, this system is a beast.

  • +1

Can someone tech-savvy compare the improvements here over the Dell Outlet deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/296254

From what I can see it's just a boost in processor and video card? Worth the extra $200ish?

    • +4

I'd definitely be paying the extra $200. This has the 7th Gen processor (and a good one at that) with the GTX 1050 Ti graphics card which can run some games at 60fps.

    • +7

For CPU's here is a run down of the two.
      I7-7700HQ vs I7-6700HQ
Here is the comparison for the graphics cards.
      GTX 1050Ti vs GTX 960M

All other components are pretty much the same so as for if it worth the extra money it would come down to your own personal needs. If you want to game and play the newest games with it all shiney and pretty yes it would be worth it. But if you dont game much and when you do they are older titles then probably not. if you want to play games its always best to buy the best card you can afford so it will last as long as possible.

A decent middle ground option would be some thing like this.
      Metabox Alpha 15"

The storage is much better but the graphics is a little slower than this deal. the cpu being the same and as for ram you can add another 8 gig for $79, additionally the warrenty is 2 years.
      GTX 1050

      • Thanks for the info!

  • Need a laptop to take with me to South Africa. Will need it to be able to process large camera files. This looks like it would with the specs just unsure about size.

    • +2

It is a bulky laptop. If you want something a bit lighter have a look at this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-15-7th-Gen-i7-7700HQ-Qua…

I'd stick to the 15" for the specs you get. Once you go down to 13" you'll lose things like GPU's etc.

      • Thanks mate.
Looks a lot thinner, although would prefer 16gb ram.

Don't leave until August so will but just before leaving and claim TRS as well.

        • +1

          No worries.
Yeah, that's the problem. Unfortunately you either sacrifice portability or performance most of the time. Unless you're willing to spend big like this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-15-3Yr-Warranty-i7-7700H…

Not a bad price at $2599.20. There will no doubt be a Dell eBay sale closer to August, just keep in mind they will take a while to get here so give yourself plenty of time before you leave :)

    • I'm not too sure but I think this one comes with the worst screen that you can get, not great for color sensitive work

      • Need a decent screen for sure. To be honest I don't even like laptops. I have an asus 17" with decent specs and only use that to tether in the studio. I'm a heavy desktop user and for the price of a decent laptop I can update one of my pc's to an x99 or new ryzen cpu's.

The other option is to go for something like the Xiaomi laptop deal listed yesterday. Something I can transfer the photos of the camera and maybe a quick browse through them. I can pass it on to one of the kids after the trip.

        • I don't think it is a good time to purchase laptops. I've heard rumors that ryzen laptops are coming out in October this year and by looking at the power consumptions of ryzen, they are suitable to be equipped on mobile.

In feature and design section says: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960M

    In Tech Specs says:

    Video Card

    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB GDDR5 graphics memory

    CHECK BEFORE BUYING

    • +2

It's definately 1050 Ti. That section didn't get updated from the looks of it. If you check th specs tab next to it, it's all good there. Also, the listed price is lower for the older version (with 960M) on Dell website.

      • +1

Yeah it's the 1050 Ti. They sold out of this laptop on the last eBay deal so my guess is they copied the listing from the old model with the 960M and just changed the tech specs without realising it had 960M on the features page.

FYI the screen is so so bad on these laptops. Terrible colors and viewing angle.
Would recommend pairing with a monitor for gaming.

  • Damn, I just upgraded my PC, but if this was available then I would have gotten this instead.

    Bloody nice machine!

  • +1

Are there any concerns with the heat generated ? I have 2 normal Dells laptops and 1 of them has had to replace the fan within the first 4 mths…

    • I can imagine that they would get nice and toasty

  • +1

    shame about the screen though

  • Hi guys, can I hook this up to my 4K resolution monitor? I am currently using a laptop that has DP, which I connect via a DP cable straight into my monitor.

The specs for this laptop say as follows:

    Ports

    3 USB 3.0 (1 USB 3.0 w/Power Share)
    1 HDMI v1.4a with 4K Display support
    45 RJ - 1

Question is, can I connect it to my 4K resolution monitor? If so, how?

    • 1.4a, could be wrong but you wouldn't be able to do 4K @ 60hz.

  • +1

I bought this exact machine for $1519 during the last sale, it's fantastic. Heat is not a problem while gaming but the other side of the coin is that the fan noise can be big for a laptop. Runs most games easily. Can confirm that it has a 1050 in it not the 960

  • +2

i have this laptop, its great. everyone is worried about the screen, but to be honest, the biggest issue i have is the sharp hard corners of the laptop where your arm. i end up getting imprints of my laptop on my arm.

  • +4

The 1050 gfx card is pretty insane for a laptop. You can finally get a great gaming experience for not too much $

    • +1

Agree. Actually a reasonable price for a good gaming laptop.

  • how would this compare to my aging desktop i7 920 6gb ram, 256gb ssd and ati rx460? Thinking of upgrading to a fast laptop.

    • Well, from the look of things, it's got more RAM and a newer chipset. Plus, it's portable. If these ain't enough reasons to upgrade, I honestly don't know what is.

    • +3

actually i7 920 isn't too bad by today's standards. CPU performance hasn't improved much in the last 8 years.

      • +1

I whole heartedly agree with this. While my main computer is new and up to date i owned the first generation I7 aswell, its now been passed along to my brother in law. The machine still pays all games on the market at 60+ FPS with a simple ram upgrade 6 gig to 12 gig, and a gpu upgrade every few years ( r9 390's now but it started with a pair of 4870's). Unless you need to upgrade to a mobile platform the i7 920 will do all you ask of it, and you can add some extra ram and a gpu like a gtx 1070 for around the $500 mark and you will be able to play any game.

    • Well you would save $100 a year in electricity. Depends on the monitor and useage.

  • Really like the specs is there a 17.3inch version available?

  • Anyone know if this is 1x16GB RAM or 2x8GB RAM? And what connection is the 120GB SSD?

  • I need to change over my desktop PC. Although I don't care for mobility as I have a company laptop, would the specs on this machine vs price be worth using this as my desktop replacement? Or would in your opinion still stick with a new tower as a replacement.

It would be on always, and hooked up to monitor and keyboard.

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

For the price of this laptop it would be easy for some one to build a new tower for you that would leave this machine for dead.

Probably some thing to the effect of I7 or Ryzen, 16 gig ddr4, 250gig ssd + 1-2 tb storage and a 1060 6gig or 1070 8gig would come in at around $1500ish +/- depending on quality of parts.

      Example build

      • Compared to the laptop it is missing an Operating System. For a similar price the laptop includes screen, keyboard, touchpad and batteries for portability. The laptop obviously has the 1050ti instead of the 1060 you listed, but price for components this laptop looks good.

Infact if you look at Dell towers with similar specs, they cost more than this laptop without a dedicated graphics card.

    • This laptop is great value for money, you couldn't buy a tower with the same specs for less. However you can upgrade a tower.

A 1050ti is great for gaming now at 1080p and will be for a few years, but after 3 years if you want an upgrade, a tower you could swap out the video card and use the rest of the system. With the laptop you'll need to get rid of all of it.

  • This is a great deal

  • +1

I heard the display is a rubbish TN panel, or have they switched to IPS?

  • +1

After analyzing this for 3 days watching reviews and wondering if I care about the crappy panel, I pulled the trigger to replace my 4 year old laptop, all I need now is a decent monitor.

  • Bought it. Looks like a good deal.

  • +1

just received mine… terrible terrible screen, looking to upgrade to ips panel now.. few threads available. roughly 60 - 80 buck upgrade
