you can get two 1 TB drives for 80 bucks each and much more portable. Although I will not neg cuz of free shipping

That means you have to use up 2 power sockets and 2 usb ports, and carry 2 when you move it around.

How is it much more portable? I would say less portable because there's twice as much to carry!

    • i reckon 2*1TB would be better, if one is destroyed at least you havent lost everything :/

spawnpoint can get 10 X 100G Drives to make him even more portable.

the 1TB ones you can get are approx 500g while this one is 1.3 kgs, hence you can carry less weight around by having a backup drive as well, while this one doesnt seem to support backups cuz its just one drive

I found a coupon and picked up one of these from DSE (instore) for $157 about a month ago, quite a good drive actually, very lean, the entire unit is little bigger than the 3.5" drive inside it, and powered by a small, light switchmode plugpack (not a brick or laptop PSU like most); not at all inconvenient to use or carry, but each to their own! ;)

    • LOL!

  • Pretty good I guess. but I am still undecided between to go either internal or external.

WD inside and comes with eSata + the drive is removable from the enclosure.

$159 + $18 shipping to Melb though (but you can get 2% off with moneybackco). Pretty sure it comes with a brick though, not the slick power supply that StewBalls suggests this unit has.

    • Please bear in mind that the Astone 481E enclosure is not particularly reliable, the forums on the Astone website have 5 complaints & not a single attempt at resolution! If I was gonna go this route, I'd just be grabbing an internal drive from an online IT supplier (@~$140) & sourcing a different enclosure! ;)

FWIW, I wouldn't bother with eSATA; if you want a slight xfer speed increase go with USB3.0, it's far more reliable! :)

  • with all the hard drive specials going on this seems to be one of the weaker ones.

unless you need straight away wait for better deals

  • The good thing about DSE is that they take the woolies wish cards. Buy them through the entertainment book for another 5% off your purchase :-)

when will people learn, 2TB, USB slow… really need esata or USB3 to use these properly…

    now this deal is better..
