Since google map on smartphones getting popular, these GPS units are dying. My old Tomtom is still sitting in my glove box for ages and never been touched.

    • Battery in mine died after about 1.5 years. Initially Tom Tom refused to fix it as they claimed that unit is covered by 12 mth warranty only. Had to point it out that in Australia 24 mth warranty period is legislated. Battery was replaced under warranty. about 12 mth later, its dead again.

      In built product obselence.

      Just my 2c.

      Cheers

  • $287 for a gps is too expensive. You could get a cheap under $200 android phone and buy a car mount, download offline google maps, use it as a dedicated gps, and also as backup phone too.

  • Tom Toms aren't what they used to be (and unfortunately we just bought one of these). The UI is laggy and difficult to navigate these days. The screens aren't great either, really bad for glare and the fonts used are hard to read, especially through polaroid glasses. Will stick with Garmin if we get another.

    • Your description of the TomTom sums up my Garmin!

  • Just use waze.

I have the tomtom go500 annd go5000. Both are brilliant. The constantly updated traffic info is extremely useful as are the audible speed alerts. Maps update 4x a year and the new models have lifetime free maps for any area in the world they cover. Much better than the built-in unit in my car which updates 1x a year and doesnt warn if I am speeding (also seems to calculate speed from the speedometer rather then the GPS which is not as accurate).
The g0500 series have a cradle system that allows removal of the gps easily without having to detach from the windscreen.

However, I agree that the batteries are crap though. They tend to last a year and then it will only work when plugged in. does mean that each time you switch on there is a long time for the unit to 'boot' but otherwise works.
Tomtom service is dreadful. They try to get out of warranty repairs and deny warranty if they can. If you can manage to get them to acknowledge a fault then it needs to be sent to them in the E.States for weeks.

  • Driving to the store and collecting an item I want to buy is free now is it? I'm going to go tell Grandma. brb

On a long trip recently my TomTom with latest mapshad no idea about changes to Pacific Motorway/Highway in the top half of NSW and kept trying to make us backtrack hundreds of kilometers.

Meanwhile my LGG4 with Google maps was okay until it overheated and refused to charge. First time it has done that and 2A car charger was bearly keeping up. I pulled it apart to cool it down and used a cheap second phone and the worthless TomTom.

Things are definitely going backwards :(
