50% off Virgin Active Membership, up to 50% off Fitness First, up to $400 off Anytime Fitness Fees/Yr for AIA Vitality Members

960

Full credit for this goes to lawyerz for this, his post tipped me off to joining AIA Vitality for half price Virgin membership, and as his post expired I thought I'd breathe some life in to it and hopefully get people cheaper gym membership.

To get the deals and access AIA you need an insurance policy that gives you AIA Vitality membership. I signed up for Life Protect through RAC, for $8.38 a fortnight. I'm young, healthy, and wouldn't have got any kind of life or injury insurance so the fact I have it is a bonus, to be honest. RAC or RACQ allow you to join directly and access AIA, otherwise you can fill in a form on AIA's site and a financial adviser will get in contact with you to sort you out with a policy that includes AIA membership.

Joining AIA gives you either $400/year discount at Anytime Fitness, or 50% off at Fitness First or Virgin Active. On top of that, each time you visit the gym you get points (capped at 15k a year) and each time you do certain activities you do. For example, filling in a mental health review on Vitality gives you 600 points, or tracking your food for 7 days per quarter gives you 1200 points a quarter. These points go towards one of four levels of membership, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. Each one gives you access to slightly better benefits in addition to the gym memberships.

Gift vouchers:
5,000 $20
10,000 $40
15,000 $60
20,000 $80
25,000 $100
30,000 $150
35,000 $200

Cashback on Qantas flights (limited to 2 per year)

Bronze 10%
Silver 30%
Gold 40%
Platinum 50%

Endota Spa vouchers (limited 4 per year)

Bronze Silver Gold Platinum
20% 30% 40% 50%

Also, if you get 250 points or more in a week through 'healthy living activities' such as going to the gym or from connecting your fitbit, you get a $7.50 Boost Juice voucher (and if you're signed up to Boost's rewards club the drinks you get through the voucher count towards the free Boost you get after every 10!).

I'm not associated with AIA Vitality at all, I just think it's a really awesome program that's saving me a ton of money.

  • Does anyone know if it works on the fitness first Titanium membership?

    • Double checking on the site, and it seems not I'm afraid:

"Your AIA Vitality membership must be active for you to enjoy the discount.
You can apply the discount to the Passport, Platinum or Black label membership fees."

  • Is it online only? Would it apply to a negotiated pric?

    • At least with Virgin, I believe you can go in and give your Vitality number there, which they apply to your account. Best bet is to check with the gym mate.

Hey OP, any info on the monthly cost for Anytime Fitness?

    • +1

I'm currently paying $60.45/month for my local gym. However, they do vary at each location.

    • +2

Tip for joining Anytime Fitness is to join a new location as a foundation member. You get the cheapest rate available and its locked in for life.

      • That isn't the case actually, it depends on what the situation is like at the gym you go to most. There is a clause in the contract that whichever anytime fitness you go to most in a 30 day period has the right to swap your membership over to their gym and change your rate to whatever their going rate is.

Most gyms in the interest of keeping customers don't change the rate…. but it has happened to myself in the past. Also the clause states that if their normal rate is less than what you currently paying, you won't get a reduction.

        • I'm from Adelaide and signed up to an AF around the corner from my house as it opened, on a foundation membership at $9.99 per week. I was active there for 1.5-2 years before we moved a little further away and I didn't attend the gym anymore. I started attending one in the CBD on a day to day basis and found out months later when I went to change my direct debit details, that my membership was moved to the CBD gym.

They've retained by $9.99 per week rate ongoing and haven't brought it up with me at all, even after seeing the manager and updating my direct debit details.

After my first year they tried to get me to re-contract for another 12 months, but I never replied and they just moved me onto a month by month charge. So I can cancel at any time and only have to pay out the remaining month.

I don't know if I was just lucky or it's how they do it now.

        • @rickadlee:

Similar situation… signed up back when gyms weren't even mainstream so managed to get a locked in rate of $7 per week
Have had this rate for 6 years :)

        • -1

          @SevenSmurfs:

" back when gyms weren't even mainstream" LOL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gym

        • @Brissy1:

"Mainstream is current thought that is widespread."

I doubt gyms were considered 'mainstream' as they are nowadays

        • @SevenSmurfs:
Actually I think they would have been considered mainstream in ancient Greece, as they were as ubiquitous as schools.

        • @ricklee: @ricklee - this is amazing!
How did you managed to convince them to maintain your original foundation rate? My current AF is asking me to rejoin at the 'AIA discounted rate' of $18/wk

    • +3

      From the site:

"As an AIA Vitality member, you will have access to an Anytime Fitness gym at a special price of $59.50 per month. Plus, each time you work out at Anytime Fitness, you will earn 100 AIA Vitality Points and can get $100 cashback per quarter (every rolling 91-day period), saving up to $400 off your annual membership!"

      • Thank you, very helpful.

    • I'm paying 56/month at mine, haven't had a price rise ever (4 years)

    • I don't see the benefit of AF over say Jetts gyms (more branches only I think) - both are 24x7 no frills for most part yet Jetts is much cheaper especially if you sign up for 12 months, like super cheap. Anyone, why go AF and not Jetts? (I'm with jetts atm).

I want to have steam room / sauna and for that Virgin or Fitness First will do so I can see the premium price justified there AND I am considering joining them.

      • +1

Jetts standard rate is $64.80 per month. ($777.60 p/y)
Anytime Fitness standard rate is $67.95 per month ($815.40 p/y)

So yes, I see Jetts is cheaper…. BUT

With this offer, AF drops to $59.50 p/m ($714) PLUS if you go 2 times per week you'll receive a further $400 cashback, bringing the total for the year to $314.

So that's the benefit of AF over Jetts.

Now, that's not to say that you haven't got a "special" price from Jetts, but we're talking standard rates. Sign up to the right one at the right time and Af can be had for around $44 p/m

HOWEVER, if you're in VIC and after a 24/7 Gym, might be better off with Derrimut for $399 p/y, if their 10 sites suited, as they are usually much better gyms.

  • How does the Qantas cashback work?

    • +1

      From the site:

"AIA Vitality members can receive cashback on domestic or international tickets (one way or return only, Multi- City and Round the World bookings excluded) on flights booked on the Qantas website. To qualify for the cashback, there needs to be a 10 day lead time between the booking date and the departure date.

Discounts are valid for flights originating from and returning to Australia, and for economy and premium economy seats only.

Make sure you’ve completed your AIA Vitality Health Check before you book your flight to qualify for the status based cashbacks. Alternatively, if you haven’t completed your AIA Vitality Health Check you can still access your 10% cashback. The cashback, with or without completion of the AIA Vitality Health Check, will count towards the usage of your two status based cashbacks.

The first two bookings each membership year will be discounted based on the AIA Vitality Status at the time of booking, where the AIA Vitality Health Check has been completed (see table below). All further bookings will be at 10% cashback.

Once you’ve booked your eligible flight, send the E-Ticket PDF to [email protected] with your Member Name and AIA Vitality Membership Number and we’ll provide the cashback that applies to your AIA Vitality Status within three weeks of AIA receiving your E-Ticket PDF."

Full disclosure I've not used it myself, but I don't have any reason to believe they'd be lying about it.

      • Still not sure on this..

I'm a Qantas Gold member, so you're saying if I have AIA for roughly $8-$10/fortnight, and I book a Qantas flight, i'll get 10% cashback?

Provided I get 10,000 points which is 100 times to Virgin Active Gym, I'll become Silver and get 30% off Qantas flights? Also, just checked that points with AIA do not expire and status' are held

        Seems a little too easy

        • It is only off the first two flights a year, but I see your point regarding it seeming too easy. Unfortunately I've not booked flights through Qantas since I've had AIA so no firsthand experience - only thing I can think would be to call AIA and have a chat with them about it mate.

If you do though, let us know what they say eh.

        • I am skeptical about this as well, 50% Cashback on a premium economy flight to London return would easily exceed the annual fee you pay each year, can't see qantas funding this out of pocket?

        • +1

This cashback program does not run off your Qantas status, it runs off your AIA vitality status. So if you have reached Gold status with AIA Vitality you will be eligible for 40% off Qantas flights.

    • +1

Just got $500 back on my international flight (bronze status) and $200 on my wifes (silver status). Also, I`ve probably received $100 in vouchers and around 10 boost juice vouchers.

      • how did you get $500 off with bronze? A $5000 flight?

        • Sorry that should have been gold - 40% back, heading for platinum this year.

        • @saffers: how do you go up the tiers? that is amazing btw!

        • @chocfrogs456: Mostly by meeting my step/exercise targets. Every week you meet the weekly target you get a $5 voucher. You also get larger vouchers as your points go up, not sure of when, but it starts at $20, $40, $60, $80 is up to where I am ATM.

You also get points for completing some online health checks and one physical health check a year (this just going to a pharmacy/Doctor and having stuff like BMI, blood pressure, etc measured.)

          See here - https://www.aiavitality.com.au/vmp-au/points_and_status/earn…

        • @saffers: fab thanks ill have to check it out!

        • @saffers: hey saffers, did you tie this back to your gym membership or was this primarily due to weekly goals/ checkups.

The points for exercises etc caps at 15,000

  • From OPs example you need to pay ~$220 a year for AIA.

  • +1

Anytime fitness last time I was there was about 500 per year, so I'm guessing they'll use over inflated pricing for this.

    • +1

You get access to the special Vitality rate of $59.50 a month, and if you go 24 times in a 1/4 year (so 91 day period) you get $100 cashback apparently.

      • @goatcorn - where did you see or here it was $59.5/mth for Anytime Fitness rate?

  • +1

You need to have an AIA policy or u can join direct from racq or rac.

I wonder if the $ 26 a year lifestyle membership from racq counts

    • Don't believe so mate, seems it has to be from the Life & Income Protection category

  • Pretty sure you need to pay $120/yr for the AIA Vitality membership itself. Might want to add that in your title or description, as it eats into the savings quite considerably.

    • I double checked that on joining and the $8.38 I pay per fortnight includes AIA Vitality membership

      • Right you are. The $120 fee applies when you have an AIA insurance policy and add Vitality on top.

  • Does anyone know what the discounted rates are for the Fitness First memberships?

    • +2

Just screenshotted the details from my login page mate:

      http://imgur.com/a/XsW77

      • Thanks very much for posting that.

The discounts seem pretty good. On the cheapest tier (i.e. Passport membership, and assuming you qualify for the cashback), the net cost would be $21 per fortnight.

      • Were you a Fitness First member before joining AIA? want to see if this works for existing customer as well.

EDIT: Don't worry about my question. I noticed that there was a similar question - but I still wonder if it will be okay or not given that I am still within the contract period (if they will let me sign up a new contract)

  • +1

    hey! copyright infringement :P

his post tipped me off to joining AIA Vitality for half price Virgin membership

But but but I didn't get any referral time :(

    • +1

I'll send you next week's Boost voucher so you can drink your sorrows away! :P

Didn't think you were able to click the referral link and join to be honest, as you have to click on the link on Vitality to bring up the discounted Virgin page.

      • You could! You join first like anyone else then approach the front desk to apply your aia discount (effective next billing fornight) ;) Just FYI and to everyone else here. don't waste the referral time (one week free for referrer). :P

        No worries though haha.

For Virgin, you need a link to the referrer's link.

        • Well damn :( Though joining full price for a fortnight just to get someone else a free week is a bit of a rough tradeoff for one party :P

        • @goatcorn: that's…. true. HAHA. :)

        • You're living up to the username, haha. Shifty ;)

  • My next question, if anyone happens to know the answer: if I'm an existing member of Fitness First already, would I be able to apply these AIA discounted monthly rates? I'm off contract (been a member for over 10 years so far).

    • +2

"Existing members of Fitness First: download your Member Authority form (there's link on the page I got this info from, but you have to be logged in to get it obviously) and attend your local Fitness First club. They will sign you up on a new contract attached to your AIA Vitality Membership. You will then receive access to the full benefits and rewards including discounted membership fees, cashback eligibility and 100 Vitality points each day you work out!"

Seems you'd be able to get the rates, but it mentions putting you on a new contract. That said if you've been a member for 10 years, I can't imagine you'd be wanting to leave in the next year, so that could not be an issue.

      • Where do I find this information regarding Virgin Active membership?

Will I be able to use this if I am an existing Virgin member on a 12 month contract?

        • Unfortunately some info seems to only be available after you log in to AIA, but I can copy and paste/screenshot anything you want mate.

"If you have an existing Virgin Active membership you will need to finish your existing contract before taking out a new one at the discounted rate. However, you can start earning AIA Vitality Points for your club visits. Simply ask the club staff to link your membership to AIA Vitality by providing your AIA Vitality membership number."

        • @goatcorn:

          Ah okay that's unfortunate, thanks!

        • @goatcorn: Sorry for the ignorance, how does this work for someone who has been a member with virgin for over two years? I sign-up with AIA and then come to virgin with the membership number? Thanks!

        • +1

No worries mate, it's annoying that half the info isn't on the AIA site until after you join!

Copied from there, though (and can screenshot if you want)

"If you have an existing Virgin Active membership you will need to finish your existing contract before taking out a new one at the discounted rate. However, you can start earning AIA Vitality Points for your club visits. Simply ask the club staff to link your membership to AIA Vitality by providing your AIA Vitality membership number."

So basically they should be able to swap you over on to the discounted one when you provide your number, as you'll have served out any contract period. It's only on the flexible membership, so the month to month one, but still, $18.50 a week isn't bad!

        • @goatcorn: $18.50 a week seems amazing, at the moment I am paying $30.95 per week. So if my calculation is correct:

          30.95 * 52 weeks = $1609.4/year ($134/month) - $150 (nib claim) = $1459.4
          18.50 * 52 weeks = $962/year ($80.167/month) + ~$250 for the RAC - $150 (nib claim) = $1062

          A saving of ~$300. Impressive!

        • @blaque:

And a bit more of a saving, or bonus, with the vouchers you get. Even if you just get the 15,000 points a year through physical activity at the gym (aka scanning your card) you'll get a $20 card at 5k points, $40 at 10k and $60 at 15k. You can pick from Coles/Myer, Woolies, Rebel sport and the like.

        • +1

@blaque: Think you need to add in the joining fee for the Gym.

        • @goatcorn: Is your $18.50 per week calculation including your AIA costs? Because I'm paying $62.35 (I think) per fortnight at Bourke Street.

        • @misscathxoxo: No it's not.

This offer is only for the 'Active Me' membership, the flexible one, which is a bit more expensive than the one on contract. Bourke St is $36.95 a week full price, versus $18.50 a week at half price plus $4.20 for AIA. All up that's about $22.70 a week, which is a decent saving for something that after signing up, takes no additional effort.

        • @goatcorn: That's really strange, I definitely pay the lower price - but I don't think I joined any type of contract. I would have never agreed to a 12 month contract!

It's a super amazing saving & I love working out at Virgin. I'll have to look into this further, thanks so much!

        • @blaque: Elaborate nib claim :D :D

      • Thanks for the info goatcorn - very helpful!

      • Thanks for the info, am also an existing member of fitness first but on a contract (about to end). Would like to know if I have to wait until the contract ends, appreciate if you could answer that for me.

  • Is it possible to do the 30 day virgin trial and then join via AIA for a discounted membership?
Any way to waive/reduce the virgin activation fee?

    • +1

I don't think you can waive the activation fee unless they're running a promo but YES you dont have to join AIA before you join virgin. I was an existing member when I found out about this deal.

      • Thanks for the fast response! How often do they run promos?

        • Not very often unfortunately. Twice a year approx?

  • Goatcorn,

Very interested in this as I'm an existing Anytime member who regularly goes to the gym. Sounds like I can definitely save some money here. Can you tell me a bit about the process (I clicked the join AIA vitality button and it's saying they'll refer me a financial advisor?)

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    • +1

Sure, no worries. Basically you can either click through like you did, get referred to a financial adviser and they hook you up with a policy (though reports on lawyerz thread seemed to be about $33 a month for the cheapest) or buy a policy that gives you access to AIA through either RAC or RACQ.

I went on RAC and looked at their life insurance covers here and got a quote for all three (as they all give access to AIA Vitality) to work out the cheapest one. For me that was Life Protect at $8.38 a fortnight. I signed up online, and around 3 days later got an email asking me to activate my AIA Vitality membership. I did that, filled in my details and from then I could log in to AIA.

  • Can anyone tell me how much is discounted Virgin Active Membership fees plus any joining fees on top?
I may join too if there is a benefit?

    • +1

Joining fee is $135, and I pay $18.48 a week direct debited every 2 weeks.

  • +1

Does anyone know how they would 'count' how many times you've been to the gym? Does the gym provide them with entry/attendance data? How do they prevent gaming the system for people that will just swipe in and walk out 2 mins later some days? (Yes, I realise in the end you're just gaming your own health, but some days people may not have the time to go and still want to get the full discount)

    • +3

With Virgin my membership card gets scanned when I enter like normal, and then I log in a day or so later to AIA and see that my visit was captured in the system, and points allocated to me for it. I imagine it'd be the same with the others - there's no mention of a minimum time to stay in there, and at least with Virgin I don't have to scan on the way out, so could in theoretically do what you're thinking.

    • +1

as goatcorn said, this is based on how many times you scan your card while entering. as we dont scan on the way out, you can, just come in and out under 30 seconds.

  • +3

The full discount for gym visits maxes out at 15,000 points , so that's 150 visits per year which is done with 3 visits per week. I train 4-5 times per week so there is no point going out of my way to scan my swipe card for extra visits. To get platinum status you would need to do the health checks and extras but most should get to gold status easily. I signed up in January and have kept the same life insurance cover I had with rest but through AIA it's a win win. I was also already a member at anytime fitness and they gave me a new contract at a lower weekly rate. The boost juice vouchers are cool but they are full of sugar.

    • How do you go about joining AIA through REST super? I am with REST Super atm.

      • my insurance is with AIA, however it is paid (via rollover)for out of my rest super fund. my adviser set me up that way, so i wasn't paying anything out pocket for my insurance

  • @goatcorn thanks for this post!

Just a question, if I do a joint RAC application for my partner and I, will she also be able to get the AIA vitality discounts?

    • +1

Good question, and one I have no idea about! Best thing would be to call and ask RAC I'm afraid mate.

      • Ok cool thanks.

    • +1

I just rang RAC. They have confirmed that both applicants will receive a different email for AIA vitality membership.

  • Any idea how much they charge for a Fitness First Platinum membership?

    • Check out here, I screenshotted the prices. 30% discount basically, and then if you go 24 times per 1/4 year you get an extra 20% cashback.

      http://imgur.com/a/XsW77

      • Thanks. These prices are ok but I don't think amazing enough for me to bother buying insurance I don't need. I am currently paying $41 a fortnight for platinum so not too much difference.

Its a very good deal though for new members who would be paying the high new member rates.

        • No worries - seems like you got a really good rate for platinum. Was that just by asking? Big draw for me was that Virgin don't haggle, you pay what they ask or nothing, so AIA was the only way to cut down on fees there that I've found.

        • @goatcorn: I have been a member for a while so they offered me a discounted rate a few years back when I enquired.

      • hello. im confused. in the description i thought it said 50% off fitness first?

  • Thanks Goatcorn. With Virgin are you restricted to one club or can you go to any? Thanks

    • You pick one as your 'home' club, which is the one you're supposed to go to most. I picked Bourke St in Melbourne as it was cheaper than Collins, haha. Apparently if you go to another club and never your home one they can ask you to switch to the club you actually go to, but the woman I spoke to on reception at Bourke St said that generally never happens.

      • Oh that's great. Thanks for the quick reply. Guess I'll pick the cheapest as well. haha

        • +1

Just remember, if you get in trouble tell them a man on the internet told you it was okay. 100% sure they'll be fine with that response haha.

  • Just signed up through RAC for $218 annual. Got the welcome e-mail, policy number etc. Doesn't seem to allow me to login/register though. Maybe it will take a few hours.

    • In my welcome email from RAC it said

"We know that life is unpredictable but your decision to take out RAC Life Protect can help ensure that your family's financial future is in safe hands. With RAC Life Insurance you also have access to AIA Vitality, which allows you to enjoy health and wellness benefits. So not only will you help give your family financial security, you’ll also get great rewards – for simply being healthy! Shortly you’ll receive an email inviting you to activate your AIA Vitality membership. If you don’t receive this within 48 hours please call [AIA Vitality number]"

    • Just rang up RAC. Apparently only home and car insurance holders can register/login to RAC so life insurance holders will not be able to login.

The customer service rep also told me that it could take up at 72 hours before the AIA Vitality invitation email will arrive but usually comes earlier than that.

  • Hi Guys,

This is my first post in Ozbargain history and I am very keen on this deal.

I am an existing Fitness first Platinum member and I am currently paying $37.00 a Fortnight since I have been with FF for over 10 years.. Would the AIA discount be from $37.00 or would it be at RRP $56.00? (considering I join for 12 months). Wouldn't be that much of a saving if it's RRP.
