I'm tired of seeing the negative Samsung comments. I own several Samsung drives in 2.5" and 3.5" form factors including my 8TB RAID5 array. To date I've never had one fail, the worst I had was a 500GB 3.5" start clicking, annoying but still never died. In contrast I've had failures from: IBM/Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate. Now I'm no Samsung fanboi saying Samsung are better than any other, but if you're suggesting they are of worse quality simply because they have carry a Samsung label I have to disagree with you. Samsung put a lot of money into their HDD game years ago which IMHO today has resulted in some very reliable products. To me the negative Samsung comments remind me of people who still to this day refuse to buy a Hitachi based solely on their 30GB IBM "Deathstars" failures of 1999. Apples & Oranges.

Not having a go just saying you might be pleasantly surprised with the modern day Samsung :)

      • Does this have a 5 year manufacturers warranty like a Seagate?

        • +2

Seagate no longer have 5 year warranties on their customer based drives, only on enterprise drives iirc

          • @Trance N Dance: Bummer, that was pretty good while it lasted, was definitely worth consideration.

        • Western Digital still do though

LOL!!! Samsung omg omg omg Samsung

Cause everyone should have data backed up failing drives is no excuse and you know what every drive fails.
WOULD you rather take a short drive to your local samsung office or ship your drive to singapore?

I had a WD and a Samsung fail..

Samsung was out of my hands for 20 mins
Western Digital send to Singapore for 2-3 weeks

      You decide

      RMA 20 mins
      or RMA 2 weeks…

      • Yes, I should have added to my post above that at the end of the day it shouldn't matter which brand one buys because we (should) have backup/redundancies in place anyway :)

The short version, after having three successive Samsung Spinpoint F1s dying on me, I would prefer the WD and 2-3 weeks.

The long version, I bought a Samsung 3.5inch 1TB drive for backup only, I had it for over a year and half but it only had 300 hours of on time according to SMART when it died. I RMAed it, Samsung kindly and very promptly send me a dead drive. Ok, bad luck, I then returned the dead drive only to receive another drive that is already showing signs of a slow death. E.g. the spin up time is over 10 seconds.

Btw, Samsung send refurbished drives not new drives.

I didn't lose any data over the 3 dead/dying Samsung drives, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't be buying another one.

Whether you like it or not, Samsung does have a higher faulty rate at this moment.

        • actually this is crap… It may have a higher fail rate for you but it has a no different then any other for all the people who sell them. imagine if it was a higher fail rate then they would not be sold!!

        • could be how your local Postman/Delivery guy handle your parcel/HDD though..LOL!!

    • But but but what about Verbatim or Iomega drives ;-) Sorry this did remind me of that flame war not so long ago.

  • $85 isn't that cheap once you factor in the shipping… It was $9.95 for me which makes it $94.95 and there are a few retailers on staticice that sell it for less than that as their normal price… I didn't negative it though but just in case people think this is an awesome deal…

  • Can you stick one of these in any laptop like a desktop? Thanks

    • Yep, just needs to have a SATA interface.
