Lenovo has really gone aggressive on this one. Just received a new promotion from them for a very popular laptop here on OzBargain. Use coupon code OZE470 to bring the following ThinkPad E470 down to $919 delivered. Ships in 2 business days according to Lenovo.

  • Intel Core i7-7500U
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 14" IPS 1920x1080
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • GeForce GT 940MX 2GB

Comparing to previous E470 deals it only has 8GB RAM (instead of 16GB) but a little bit cheaper. Depending on your applications, 16GB might be overkill for some. GT 940MX on the other hand, is a bit underwhelming as a gaming GPU, but still a lot better than HD Graphics 620 (which is almost unusable for anything gaming). It sports only an HDMI connector anyway so will not be able to drive external monitor at high resolution / high refresh rate.

Overall to me (been a Lenovo user over the last 6-7 years) that E470 is a cheap, fast, solid-built but no-frills laptop.

  • This, or ThinkPad E570 / Gen7 i7-7500U / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD / 15.6" FHD / GTX 950 2GB Nvidia ??? Can get it for $934 via the Premium Store!

    • +2

That for sure if you can deal with the larger size

    • what's the URL?

  • can you get docking stations for these?

    • Nope. Only can use the standard USB3 docks, which is quite limiting. For ThinkPad you need to get at least L series for docking, and the latest T/X series also have Thunderbolt 3 for TB3 docks.

    • +1

Only via USB3, and in my experience, they're buggy af.
The video output is terrible from the dock, and there's software to improve videos on the external screen, which doesn't help much at all.

    • -1

      Lenvo…. docking stations…. just don't

Have had two onelink pro docks replaced. Even now USB/video through them is completely unreliable.

I can't imagine how their USB3 dock would go.

Bring back the good T460S deal, Lenovo!

    • +1

Whats so great or different about the T460S?

      • +1

This is covered quite well in the comments on the deal that I linked to.

    • They wont :(. I just bought the XPS 15 for $1840. A bit more than I wanted to spend but hopefully worth it.

    • Been waiting for that one too mate.

    • Can be had cheap in japan if u go there

    • I was going to grab that but the comments on battery turned me away.

    DO NOT BUY
I previously bought this deal three weeks ago, laptop would not turn on without crashing. Have had 150+ calls with lenovo since, worst customer support still waiting for a refund, going through consumer affairs at the moment.
0/10 do not give this company your money

    • +2

150+ calls in 21 days = 8 calls per day. When do you sleep?

      • +1

@ Seanbassie haha sorry bit exaggerated, been at least 50 then another 50 emails. Then resorting to messaging their facebook page as customer service stopped responding, they also stopped responding which lead to me going to consumer affairs Victoria

        • +1

          Fair enough

    • +3

Not denying your claim, but 150 phone calls in 3 weeks? That sounds a bit rough on the phone bill

        • Looks like a corrupted Windows install. Try to press F9 (Google recovery key for Lenovo) before boot and there will be a Windows recovery step. Follow the steps and you may restore Windows and get it going.
It will save you headaches for warranty fix … for now anyway!

        • @vinni9284:
I had this same issue with a Levono I bought in the US.

Called their help desk multiple times - had to provide details = 5mins each time (frustrating), only to be offered NO Help.

Each time, I was asked to purchase a support upgrade so they could assist me - I had bought the machine THE DAY BEFORE>

I worked out the recovery option and used that and everything worked properly.

        • @GC1: It just looks like a corrupted pre-install OS from the factory and a recovery can fix. Unfortunately, in my view that customer service eventually will(is) becoming extinct. Especially after a purchase.
          Cheers

    • CHARGE BACK. use the fiat shit system to your advantage. edit: crap i chose poorly, BTC up…monero down..why? do people not value their privacy? i wonder how many asses got owned from the cloudflare security issue…use 2fa peeps.

      • Hey another Moonero follower, I wish I had of saved some bitcoins for this dip.

Anyway does this laptop get very hot I only want to play skyrim, halo and minecraft so a dedicated graphics card isn't necessary but i cant seem to find laptops without one much cheaper.

Also any computer people know why a six year old i7 gets a higher score on passmark than these current generations do.

would it actually be slower or is it a meaningless test?

    • Mine works fine …..What did you do wrong ….

What did you do wrong ….

        Bought it.

    • +1

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

    • +1

Lenovo after sales support is very very bad.
slow at email, slow at returning calls/voicemails and they don't follow up most time.

I bought my E470 back in December 2016 and I still have not received it.
The first one was lost by DHL and I'm the process of waiting for DHL to confirm the second one has also been lost.

One might argue this is not Lenovo's fault, but they made me wait over a week for DHL to confirm that they have lost the package, then had to wait almost another week for management to approve another unit to be shipped, then I was added to the end of the queue for the replacement laptop to be built. I also requested the second unit to express posted but they decline.

Now I'm starting all over again. I would have been better off getting a refund and buying another one. Chances are all you guys will get your laptop before me at the rate I'm going!

I think Lenovo could have done a lot more on to make my experience better, but they didn't and most probably won't the second time.

You have to judge the service of a company by how they deal with customers when things don't go to plan, but when things don't go to plan.

    Hi there,

Edit:No problems with negs. However I like to be honest :-) No point bull-tishing Neg away lol!

    I wouldn't say it's fast.

I have had interactions with several similar laptop specs and in my view, any "U" type processor is gutless when it comes to Win 10.

It is all about reducing the size and weight of the laptop (cost cutting) and as a result, less battery size is installed, and a U processor to save power in processing. There is always a trade-off.

When new and and with fresh OS, it works OK, but then after updates, installing some programs including MS Office, it performs like an anvil is tied to it.

The 256GB SSD storage is adequate for now, but with a few updates and some programs installed, half is lost. Give it a year and you have to update the HDD. Not sure if you can open up and replace.

But for the specs and under a $1K, it is adequate.

    Cheers

  • I think the extra 8gb of ram for $20 is worth it even if you don't use it initially.

    • +2

      +1

Def better to have double the ram for a measly $20 more.

  • how long till cashrewards recognises this purchase? i bought one of these from the last deal late last week… which had double the ram.

    • I bought 3x E570 from a deal a few weeks ago. Still nothing… Ive submitted a ticket, and still nothing.

I also bought another 4 laptops 2x E570, 2x E560 and a M900 Desktop 8 days ago, and still not tracking from CR.

Almost $1k in cashback from CR that has not tracked.

Hope your experience is not like mine. My other purchases $10-$200 on Aliexpress and $2k on eBay have all tracked fine…

      • nothing yet either…i recently only just got a shipped email from lenevo.
so ill wait a bit….sounds like cash rewards is a scam. :)

        • CR finally got back to me and have added the cash backs to my account. No reason as to why they didnt appear automatically though. Now to wait the 3 months so i can withdraw it to me bank….

  • Dell XPS 13 (i7 7th Gen, 8gb Ram, 256gb ssd, QHD+ Touch screen) for $1670 or this?

    Thanks!

    • +1

Totally different class of machines. The XPS is a much better build quality and lighter, but lacks dedicated GPU. This is a very nice price for the specs, i'd take this. I think the XPS 15 for $1840 is better value if you wanted an XPS though, and the CPU and GPU are much better than this machine.

    • +2

Xps. You'll be spending a lot of time on it. Get something decent.

      • SO I gather by your comments, XPS IS clearly the superior product. But why…? What makes it better?

        • Better build quality, great form factor, good screen. Only downside is it can't really run modern games. I have a horize custom laptop. Spent $1500, but i don't regret it at all 3 years later. $1000 on something semi decent is a waste of money. The 15" xps is probably a better buy if you don't value the portability so much with the current ebay deal

        • @tomkun01:

I value portability so I need the XPS 13. I don't play any games at all either, so I guess that's no problem for me.

Also, I already purchased the xps 13 about 3 months ago. I was just trying to figure out if I regret my decision or not lol

Thanks heaps for the input - I feel good about my decision lol ;)

        • +1

@unistudent1: battery on xps 13 is amazing too.

        • @tomkun01: can confirm!

  • @scotty

It sports only an HDMI connector anyway so will not be able to drive external monitor at high resolution / high refresh rate.

Can you explain this please? Why does an HDMI connector impose this limitation?

My HP Notebook is driving a 40" Philips external monitor at 3840 x 2160, refresh rate 23 p Hz
Will this Lenovo not be able to do this?

    • 3840 x 2160, refresh rate 23 p Hz

You don't realize that refresh rate is… kind of low? The reason you're limited to 2160p24 is because your HDMI connection is probably v1.4, if it were v2.0 you would be using 4k @ 60hz refresh.

HDMI has different versions, on some laptops they 'only' give you HDMI v1.4, which is a bottleneck if you want smooth 60hz 2160P display.

      • @scrimshaw

        smooth 60hz 2160P display

I assume you are talking about gaming, etc.
On my oldish HP notebook with a 40" Philips external monitor at 3840 x 2160, refresh rate 23 p Hz I don't see any mouse lag.
I use my notebook for Excel and internet stuff.

In fact, since I changed to a Samsung SSD, my notebook is very snappy and I haven't felt the need to upgrade. Still, I am always tempted by "bargains" like this one :)

    • +1

This Lenovo has the GT940MX hence going by the specs, HDMI 2.0 should be supported hence "Theoretically" display 2160p60
It depends on what motherboard is used on the Lenovo however going by the 7th Gen CPU, it may support that output. But I would ask the question and get feedback from them first before purchase.
However, even if it does …. you would definitely experiencing a choppy mouse movement/lag hence I wouldn't recommend running at that res. The GPU is too under-powered to display smoothly at that res.
      Cheers

      • +1

        Doooooooooooooooooooon't hence me in

        • LOL. Yes .. too many h(f)ence's. I should build some! What do ya reckon?

        • @vinni9284: I think it was just the right amount of hences. Therefore the end.

        • @mossfrog: Nah,… hence you have mentioned my repetitiveness. A few more hences may be warranted. Ok ok … enough of hences

  • Hmmmm. This or the $999 T460 I ordered from centrcom today.?? (I reckon I could cancel)

    • T460 from CentreCom is not SSD hard drive. So not worth it in my view.

      • Maybe not but I'm not in normal bargain hunt mode as it's for work. They're changing hdd to 512 Samsung ssd so I figured its a decent option given the weird budget/s I've got to work to. $1500 from centrecom or $1000 elsewhere.

It comes down to gpu vs build quality. GPU isn't a big deal for my needs so T460 makes sense I guess.

  • Hey guys!

I'm wondering if this laptop would be capable of running Ansys and SolidWorks smoothly. I also intend to use this laptop for uni and I just wanted to ask if these specs would be sufficient.

    Thanks!

    • +1

3D CAD. I'd say this should be fine, but on the lower limits. Really depends how complicated you're getting. At least it has a distinct graphics card.

As for carting it around every day, I wouldn't with an 'E' series Lenovo. To me, they just don't feel solid enough to be carrying around a lot.

      • Thanks for the advice!

How does compare to the yoga 460 which is $1499 now with:
        -i7-6500U
        -8GB DDR3
        -2GB 940M
        -256GB SSD
        -14" IPS FHD touch
        -1.8kg

        • +1

I was considering a yoga until I real a few comments saying the keyboard isn't very good, at least not compared to thinkpads. Completely unrelated to how well in can run 3D CAD of course but thought it was worth mentioning.

  • -2

Any IBM ThinkPads as part of the deal, OP?

  • +1

I'm sure this deal is on every 3 days but with an extra 10 bucks off. Yawn.

  • only hdmi port kills the deal. i need to hook my laptop to an 4k external.

  • +2

    Weight: Starting at 1.9 kg

    • Look for deals on weigh protein if you want to gain weight

  • What's a good laptop deal that covers the following:
    - reasonably friendly with a 4K external monitor (if possible)
    - has 256SSD or more
    - reasonably lightweight for taking in car to work every day
    - reasonable battery life
    - under $1200

    Thanks!

  • Slightly more expensive but similar spec ideapad at harvey norman right now http://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-510-re-15-6-la… personally I would say the thinkpad is a far better product, but in case anyone needs to buy from a physical store.
