  • Nice price to play with the phone.

Yes. Quit play-ing around and get officeworks to price beat.

Oh i thought we are doing puns?

      • +1

Remind me of these 3 i meet in vegas, One is ok to play with, the cheapest one talk too much and the most expensive one can really sucks.

It sounds like you're talking about …Hookers… lol

        • @dlovep: That would be a device one uses to consume hashish.

  • What do people think about the Moto G4 Play?

Seems like one of the better budget handsets around. I'm after something for a family member as their first smartphone for internet, banking, Skype, etc. Something slightly durable and water resistant seems desirable, plus Aus warranty (so no Xiaomi for them).

Seems better than the HTC Desire 530 and Samsung J3? But I know nothing about Snapdragon 400 series (I've only had flagships myself).

    Thanks!

    • Further to this is the Plus worth the extra hundo?

      • +3

This is a tougher one, since they are actually different in physical size (Plus is 5.5", Play is 5.0") so in that can affect decisions.

The G4 Play is great value, but the G4 plus has a higher resolution screen, better system-on-chip (main difference is that the Plus has a 6 series snapdragon which uses the big.LITTLE architecture which can reduce power consumption significantly by using the lower powered cores for low level tasks) and GPU, higher camera resolution (and seemingly better results based on a quick online search).

This is a value judgement. You get what you pay for but you will get a good deal either way.

Thanks mate, since I just use it for internet and messaging these days I don't need a powerhouse. I do value a good looking display, battery and camera so might go the Plus.

        • The snapdragon 617 low powered cores are the exact same type used (Quad core cortex a53 clocked at 1.2 ghz) in the snapdragon 410, built on the same process and have the same clock speed. I doubt in real world use there would be a significant difference in power use from the s617 processors over the s410. I think the main benefits for the snapdragon 617 is marginally faster processors, faster memory, better modem, more powerful gpu (but then uses a higher screen resolution screen to offset this), support for better cameras and video recording, faster storage, dual band wifi, and better DAC. Those are the main benefits with the higher tier SoC.

If it was using a SoC like snapdragon 625, which uses the same cortex a53 designed processor but built on a new better process you'll see a gain to battery life. And would be a valid difference worth considering.

          @Ronnnie:

This is true. I missed that.

It will be a fine phone for browsing. The Moto G4s have marshmallow which support adoptable storage, that is, you can use the micro SD card as if it is internal storage, which can alleviate some of the problems of a 16gb phone. You will want a very good micro SD (with high write speed) for this, though.

Looking at the specs I would definitely choose the moto G4 play.

One thing to consider is whether the camera quality is acceptable, since it may turn out to be the smartphone's primary function.

  • Has anyone used it, any good? > Raw Audio Neon Portable Bluetooth Speaker

ugh, still waiting for the V6 Slim to be available for the bing lee/good guys ~$270ish price. i wont be able to live with myself if i pay more. but the house is also starting to get dirty…..

    • Have you considered crowdfunding the extra ~$30?

  • +3

thanks got OW to price match on the G4 Play

    total $188.10

    • Let us know how it is :)

Just last week I found the G4 play on the slickdeals website for US$100 but they don't deliver to Aus. So I used PriceUSA to ship for me… total came out to A$168 BUT I don't get the local warranty….

At the time, the cheapest local seller was selling for A $249 so I figured $A168 was worth the gamble… at A$198 local stock with warranty is not bad

    • Be aware though, the US model won't support the Australian LTE bands, esp the prized Band 28

      • Thanks for the heads up. In that case I don't recommend anyone do what I did..Lol,

lucky for me I only bought it to tether from my work phone where I cannot check my personal emails or WhatsApp

Does this mean I will only get 3G on it?

        These were the specs

        GSM 3G/3.5G UMTS, HSPA+: 850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz

        4G LTE LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 41 Bands

        • +1

The XT1607 (this deal and the slickdeals one) has all required Australian bands except 28.
The XT1609 is the US version to avoid.

        • @McFly:

whew! thanks for that Marty….was worried, I would have ended up with a wifi only device :-)

  • Moto G4 Play ($198) or HTC Desire 728 ($199)? which one would you recommend.

  • Has this deal expired? Because I see $249 when I go to the HN website.

  • Went for the Moto G4 Plus at Good Guys with a price match to the 5% discount Officeworks would have offered for $283.10.
