Free Open Beta's are considered deals?

    • +7

Consider it a public service announcement

      • +1

I consider Tightarse a national treasure.

"Granted access" to an open beta? Thanks Ubi!

I played the closed beta, it's underwhelming.

  • +4

Played closed beta - solid game. Worth the play before you buy it - I'll be buying.

  • Anyone know if its same files as the closed Beta or is it an entirely new 24gb download?

    • Was just under 20gb for me and I played the closed beta. I'm on pc though.

    • It will be a new download.

      • +2

Pretty sure it's not. The closed beta has been changed to the open beta on my account and it did a small update. That's all.

        • +1

It won't be a new download

  • +2

    24gb dl kills me

    • +2

      Overnight 😀

    • +2

      Not intended for mobile phones.

Unfortunately, gaming is evolving and most content is delivered by download rather than via physical disks. If you want lots of cool graphics, then the game size is going to be massive (and increasingly so as time goes on).

If you consider 24GB is a problem, it's time to ask mum and dad nicely to change their Internet Provider or plan.

      • +8

were in australia. your usually stuck with whatever snail service your able to achieve lol

        • +1

My 100mb/sec Cable certainly isn't snail speed… however the servers overseas seem to only ever dish out the download at 10 to 20Mbit/sec anyway.

From what I've seen it's largely irrelevant what service you have, a 24GB download is always going to take many hours (eg: leave it overnight).

I'd assumed that Verse's comment related to the 28GB being too large, and hitting the plan's cap.

        • @llama:

That's strange. I cap out my line speed (~100mbps) when I was downloading Wildlands for the closed beta. Took under an hour for the 24Gig download.

        • +2

@llama: Internet party at llama's house!

        • @gearhead:

I cap out my line speed (~100mbps) when I was downloading Wildlands for the closed beta.

Sorry I probably confused things with my comment, as I reckon it strongly depends on the game platform.

My comment was based on watching the slowness of a whole bunch of X-Box games we've installed since Christmas. Last knight I was listening to my kid on Skype whining about the DL of Rocket League onto his friend's machine so they could pay online… it's only 5.5GB and took a lot more than an hour.

So maybe it's only X-Box that's crap, perhaps because it's downloading from M$ Store rather than the Developer Server. Steam, Origin, or wherever PC games are downloaded from.

          Internet party at llama's house!

BYO Beer and Cat 5 cable.

        • +1

@llama: Unfortunately, there are many people in Australia stuck on slow ADSL2+ or ADSL1 with no immediate option to improve their download speeds.

        • @Xenocaust:

          Sadly that is so true.
As long as we keep having gormless, mouth-breathing, buffoons like Bill Morrow in positions of influence, we will always be a "communications backwater".

          E.g. https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/02/nbn-ceo-says-aussies-would…

        • @Xenocaust:

Unfortunately, there are many people in Australia stuck on slow ADSL2+ or ADSL1 with no immediate option to improve their download speeds.

I know, of course. However if (say) Microsoft only serves Xbox downloads at 10mb/sec, then it will only ever download at 10mb/sec irrespective of ADSL or Cable or NBN or 3G or 4G.

The servers will throttle each connection, to prevent leechers with a big pipe from taking an unfair share, and leaving none for Aussie ADSL1 users.

On this Beta there's an absolutely massive number of people all downloading 24GB at the same time, however the available server-side bandwidth is not unlimited. So they divide the capacity equally between each of the (tens of thousands?) of individual connections.

So, unless content is locally cached by ISP, my 100Mb/sec won't help me because they don't let anybody have that speed. We all might only get it at (say) 10Mb/sec, or whatever.

Anyway, the bottom line is that you have what you have and your expectations are based upon that. If you think your internet is too slow, then you are free to move to a new home.

      • I've got ADSL2 but it maxes out at 12mbps and downloading the 96GB Gears of War 4 from the Windows Store took multiple days. The only option other than ADSL is 3/4G which are much faster but you can't get unlimited and the billing is insane for any sort of reasonable use.

I played the closed beta for this. Think the division crossed with farcry style enemy encampments. But not as good as farcry, pretty similar to the division. The vehicle physics were also terrible lol.

    • I completely agree. Vehicle physics were totally dreadful in closed beta. I can't remember a good thing about the game, because I'm so stuck up on this… :(

    • +1

I thought it was completely different to The Division. Much more like Mercenaries or Just Cause.

Yeah the vehicle physics were a big downer. You can't even set up a roadblock with burnt out cars.

Think I'll pass. Ubi are known for phoning in this Franchise. They have been for over a decade.

    • Ubi are known for phoning in this Franchise

      What precisely does that mean?

What if you left the phone off the hook while you play?

      • +1

It means they half-ass it. You end up with a very mediocre to bad offering that sells on the Ghost Recon brand name alone. See: Advanced Warfighter 1/2, Predator, Future Soldier

        • +2

Yeah, I know what Ubi does… have ended up googling to work out what you were talking about.

Your shortening of the widely used American slang phrase "phone it in" into "phoning" completely threw me off track.

          Getting old, I guess :-D

        • +1

I thought the advanced warfighter series was still like old ghost recon.
They dumbed it down a lot for future soldier will admit. Sync shot was a cool addition.

After playing the closed beta Wildlands is really designed for casuals, which is a shame.

    • It's a free trial. I played it a couple weeks ago and thought it was pretty decent. Lots of options for completing missions.

  • I'll organise to DL this while I'm at work, whereby flatlining the connection at home…
Of course, this will drastically affect my wifes ability to watch Netflix.

    My wife may kill me…

    • +2

      QoS?

      • QoS… That would involve throttling the wife, to improve the overall quality of life, correct?

        • +1

Just throttle her to 360P videos. Then blame Netflix for having "shit quality films".

  • +1

Played through this (beta) a couple weeks ago. Was pretty good. Like a more serious Just Cause 3. I would potentially pick it up on sale, but not full price.

    • +2

$69 with JB on Day One sounds good!

      • $67.99 plus free shipping from OzGameShop even better

        • Guaranteed to arrive day one? Besides I like AUS copies better. Bought games from OzGameShop and they're imported, go to trade and you lose even more from them due to ratings classification.

        • @ThePriceMatchGuy:

I think you forget what site you're on, most people on here wouldn't care for day one availability and would rather get it cheaper.

        • @cdestratis: I hardly think a saving of $1.01 is getting it a lot cheaper. Besides most of their games have international rating classifications. So I boil back to my point about trading/selling later on.

        • @ThePriceMatchGuy: I never said it were a lot cheaper, but savings is savings and I don't think getting a game like this on day one is critical.

In regards to it's international rating, if you were savvy you would sell the game privately after you were finished with it.

      • Does anyone know if EB games can price match a preorder?

        • +1

If you have pre-ordered a standard copy of the game, yes EB Games will price match.

      • For PC you can get it for AU$63.96 direct from ubisoft if you use their 20% off code via https://club.ubisoft.com/en-GB/shop-discount

  • Can you get to this via xb1 ?

Never mind, I found it. It's not on the main dashboard or anywhere in games. Pre order + closed beta is there.

Ended up searching for “beta” and found it that way.

  • +2

bored to tears with the closed beta and just like all Ubishit betas they'll change nothing based on feedback.
    Nothing more than publicity.

  • Anyone else having issues being able to see this game come up in ubiplay under free games on PC?

I can't see it anywhere for me

  • I'm more of a car-sim gamer, but I have pre-ordered the deluxe version (same price as standard version) of this game for PC. Also downloaded the open beta. Looks pretty good from what I have seen on youtube.

When you pre-order you get a couple of additional features, including a bonus mission. Couple that with the UPlay offer of 20% off using 100u uplay credits and it's not a bad offer - https://club.ubisoft.com/en-AU/shop-discount

    • Have you actually played it yet? I don't think it's worth pre-ordering at all.

      • I have played the beta. Looks good for co-op.
Time will tell how good the final release is.

  • When dows this start and finish ? I downloaded on ps4 but when I try to play it says BETA OVER beta is now closed thank you for playing.

    • +1

      Seems it starts 23rd

      • It is 10:48am GMT of 23rd and it still hasn't started. No where in the world now is still in 22th (except if you are on the sea and near the International Date Line.

Correct -> the ad "preload now" is still on my UPLAY but the game actually plays now.

  • I got an email saying "PLEASE NOTE THAT A PS+ OR XBOX LIVE GOLD MEMBERSHIP IS MANDATORY TO PLAY IN COOP ON PS4 OR XBOX ONE. "

Will we be all gravy this weekend due to this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/292763

    • +1

Based on these factors I'd definitely say so.

      • Thanks PriceMatchGuy :)

  • I was hoping for a tactical shooter, but it just seems like Just Cause 2 with friends. [PC] Is there an option somewhere to turn up the realisim? Also, is there an option to turn off the dynamic brightness, the game is going from super nova bright to pitch black. I entered a room and started talking to a guy and I could no see a damn thing.

    • Agreed very hard to see in alot of scenes.

  • so how longs this running for ?
