dam, nice find i should have checked aliexpress

However you have a far better buyer protection with ebay because of paypal, compared to AE which doesn't offer it.

        • +3

AE offers buyer protection but its bs, better off buying from eBay

God damn it. Stop it. Just stop. I'm happy with my current phone, stop tempting me, please!

pretty amazing value for an fhd phone

i suspect the reason its cheap is that intel have discontinued the Atom line of processors for phones

4gb ram and 16gb rom is kind of a strange format too

    • kind of a strange

Kind of strange like all the other 16GB phones?

      • Other 16GB phones won't have 4GB of ram, they'll typically have 2GB of ram or less.

  • +3

Have this phone for 2 years now and still quite good and 4gb ram definitely helps.

    • +3

Yeah me too. The only down side is the camera like all 'budget' phones.

      • I agree. I've had mine for about six months and the camera stinks. Otherwise a great phone.

    4G: FDD-LTE 1800/2100MHz

Chinese version. Supports the least amount of 4G bands.

Good for Vodafone, but if you're on Telstra or Optus you really should be looking at the Taiwanese version.

    Edit: https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone_2_ZE551ML/specifications/

    4G :
    FDD-LTE: (TW version)
    2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700MHz AWS(4)/850MHz(5)/900MHz(8)/1800MHz(9)/800MHz(18)/850MHz(19)/700MHz(28)

    FDD-LTE: (WW version)
    2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700MHz AWS(4)/850MHz(5)/2600MHz(7)/900MHz(8)/800MHz(20)

    FDD-LTE: (US version)
    2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700MHz AWS(4)/850MHz(5)/2600MHz(7)/900MHz(8)/700MHz(17)/800MHz(20)

    FDD-LTE: (CN version)
    2100MHz(1)/1800MHz(3)

    TDD-LTE: (CN/IN version)
    2600MHz(38)/1900MHz(39)/2300MHz(40)/2500MHz(41)

ASUS phone 4G/LTE band compatibility varies by region. Please check compatibility with local carriers If intending to use your ASUS phone outside the original purchase region.

This phone can be flashed to WW (World Wide) so I wouldn't stress too much about it.

      • +1

Flashing to WW doesn't unlock the bands.

If you've found a working solution then please come share it at xda-developers

        • Oh? Is that so? My bad I didn't realise, I have the TW version and I flashed it to WW to get rid of the TW apps/languages.

      • Extra cost? Or free, at home?

    • +1

It's ok for Optus too - supports TDD-LTE Band 40 (which Optus also have). However, agree that the TW version is even better due to Band 28 support.

If the second sim is 2G, it's useless in Australia.
It looks, doesn't have nfc, wireless charging, water resistant, some sensors, removable battery, …
But it's very good for the price.
And obviously anything is better than LG!

    • +5

I have this phone and it definitely has NFC.

I've had this phone for about 2.5 years now. Battery is great and the screen is bright. Uninstall all the bloatware, use Google Launcher or Nova launcher and you're set. Asus Zen UI is great for people who LOVE to customise the sh*t out of their phones.

    My phone was from Taiwan.

  • I have this phone and I wouldn't recommend it for 2017. Unless you can get this for around ~$150 AUD, then it's not really worth it. Performance is roughly a Samsung Galaxy S5 and build quality is a hit and miss kind of thing. The only thing good about this phone was the 4GB of RAM and the half decent battery life (at the time of release), but unfortunately there are so many other options that are more value for money.

Other options, such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon 650 (I also have used it) or with a little bit more money, you could get a Mi5 which is miles better.

Another thing to keep in mind is that 16GB storage, it's horrible. Even with a MicroSD (MicroSD reader on this phone is really really slow), you will still run into internal storage issues.

My Zenfone 2 is starting to have defects on the screen, it's basically yellow tinting on the side of the screen. Very annoying. Thankfully, I don't have the touch issues that a lot of other Zenfone 2 users are experiencing.

    • Some offer 32gb for a bit extra…

Is eBay's 20% Sale for $150+ purchases still alive?

    • I'd pay this price for S5… Great phone

  • I purchased this phone back in March 2015. It is a great phone for the price, I even smashed my screen and got it repaired for under 100$. It is still working fine and now my friend is using it, no issues with the battery. If you want a budget phone this is a good choice.

  • Had this phone for nearly 2 years, still works fine, only paid $260 for it new..

  • Have had this phone over a year now, was good at the start then started having problems within a few months, unable to recognise 2nd sim (2G only) then when removed and replaced in slot would work ok for few days, Also kept locking up after ending a call, needing a reboot. I wouldn't buy this phone again

Replaced with Xiaomi Mi5 in June last year, and since changing to Global Stable Rom, has been perfect, spend a little more and get one of the Xiaomi phones

    • Second this. I've had it for a year and it's a dog of a phone. It'll just randomly reboot for no reason, sometimes while in the middle of a phone call.

The sensor is faulty on mine (a common problem) which I can't turn off on some apps. It means if I call someone, if they don't answer I have to take the battery out to end the call.

      • You can't take the battery out…

        • On my Zenfone 2 you can.

        • @SirFlibbled: So you have a Zenfone 2 Laser or Selfie, which is a different phone to this one

        • Doesn't give me much confidence in the rest of the review!

        • @Charlesberg22: Same make and model, I doubt they made completely different software as that's the main issue.

        • @SirFlibbled: For the record, my Zenfone 2 has been good for its 2 years. Hasn't needed to be rebooted any more regularly than any other phone I've owned

        • @Charlesberg22: Mine doesn't "need" to be rebooted either. It just does it - randomly.

  • +1

I have this phone for one and half year and can't wait to replace it. The battery life is incredibly short compared to my wife's cheaper Xiaomi Redmi note 3.
