Price drop for WD 4TB My Passport in White. Pretty good deal and if you have any Amazon referral discounts it will make it even cheaper plus save another $1 if using an Amazon ParcelPoint location.
According to this link can be used for PS4 as well.

Update: As per Jabba The Hutt's comments below not able to be used inside PS4.

Jabba the Hutt 53 min ago
This review suggests there'll be a WD40NMZW inside. There's little info on that drive, but going by this forum post, it may not have a SATA connector.
Long story short: wouldn't buy this for internal use.

Praeto has also mentioned for extra $10US you can get other colours instead of white - black, red, yellow, blue.
Thanks guys!

Here's the spiel:
Auto backup with included WD Backup software
Password protection with hardware encryption
Reimagined design
Trusted drive built with WD reliability
USB 3.0 port; USB 2.0 compatible

    • -3

It looks great. btw I negged ya because I disagreed with your opinion haha

    • +2

Looks like a pack of cigarettes

  • If it's Amazon, I assume delivery will vary by location?

    • Not sure when I had a look even without putting my address it just had $109.99 + $7.53 as the cost to be delivered to Australia.

      • Maybe it's because of Amazon Global Shipping program, not sure when they introduced that so it may be a standard price for Aus shipping.

  • Does anyone know what color WD hard drives they put in these things? Wouldn't mind grabbing one, opening it up and installing it into my PC. Please be black. Please be black.

    • +1

These are notebook size drives. Not sure if those are colored like the desktop drives.

    • +3

Also, in the past these drives connect via a circuit board and do not have a SATA connection, so I don't think it's possible to even use these outside the casing

      • Is this just the WD drives or particular capacities? Wanting to use as internal drive

    • +4

The case will probably be black metal for the main body with silver upper case.

Usually the sticker on the case will be white in color with blue and black inks showing the details.

    • No way they would ever put a black in these :( They are the green/blue for the passport series and red for the mycloud stuff

      • Tbh find me an external harddrive with a black in it.

  • +1

Using Amazon currency conversion, the price comes to AU$148.85.

      Order total: AUD 159.04

      how did you get AU$148?

      • +2

        You're right. Adding postage it's $159.04

        • If you use an international credit card and not use Amazon conversion you'll get a better AUD price. I think that's how the op got that amount

  • +1

Are these better than the Lacie Rugged Mini hard drives?

    • I got a neg, that would mean a no?

      • +2

Nah, just means someones an asshat. :P

I've found the WD Portable drives to be very good. I've had half a dozen over the last 10 years, and they're all still working fine.. The only reason I've ever needed to upgrade is simply to get the higher capacity drives. The one and only Lacie Rugged drive I have (while still functional), is fairly finicky and has not been as reliable.

  • +1

4tb they are getting huge capacities now.
What are they like for power consumption, are they on the limit for a USB port? I'm wondering if you plug it in permanently into a USB port on a router whether you are pushing the limits on the router over time.

    • +3

its bloody time for huge capacities. 2tb and 3tb have been around for ages now.

    • 4TB have been around for a while now I think?

These are over 2cm thick though.

They even have 5TB portable drives

  • Is this price only if you are an amazon prime member? ( seems so with my old eyes)

    • no.

  • Have been keeping an eye on these.

What are people's thoughts on using these as a backup drive?

    • +1

      They're a perfectly reasonable option.

  • +1

Personally I'd go for this one instead for the extra $10 USD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GKFQC82/ref=pd_luc_rh_sbs_03_02…

    • extra $20 USD?

      • Sorry, I was comparing it to the black version of the original drive that was posted. The white one was $109, but if you change the colour to black it's $119.

    • static will kill metal drive and its not in stock till 19th feb

      • You're correct about it not being available for a week, but I'm dubious about the static claim. I've owned loads of metal enclosures for drives over the years, and I've never had an issue with any of them. My carpet is notorious for causing static electricity and I've never had one of my external drives die.

        • that's a good sign I never buy metal drives thinking static will just kill it if not grounded properly

        • +3

          @ozdesi:
Not how electricity works. If anything plastic shell drives are more susceptible to static discharge because of the lower conductive mass. Not to mention heat dissipation, where metal obviously has the advantage.
No, the only thing plastic cases have over metal is lower cost to produce and lighter weight.

    • What difference is in the ultra other than purple colour?

      • Other than the aesthetics, it's a slightly smaller drive dimension wise.

    • $129.99 + $7.23 Shipping, is this what you get?

  • Cheers. Been waiting for something like this!

  • Omg why is there no Orange!

  • Can anyone tell can I use both referral link and cashback to buy the disk?
    Thanks

  • +4

FYI, for those not aware, even though this drive can't be used as an internal drive for a PS4, this will become a lot less of an issue due to the fact that the PS4 will soon be able to support external hard drives as system/game storage anyway. Still a good option (Price wise) for those looking at adding some more space to their PS4's as long as you can live with that extra storage being external. Unsure exactly when the PS4 system update will be generally available to support this though, it's currently being Beta Tested.

About the only thing wrong with this drive would be the colour :-)

  • Just to be clear about PS4 compatibility, it will work as an external drive with the upcoming 4.50 firmware for PS4. With the new firmware it'll work just like external drives with the xbone.

As per above comment, I have the 4.50 beta with external HDD support among other new features and can share my PSN burner account with anyone that wants to download the beta on their PS4s as well.

    • Can you move the external to another machine?

The main reason I ask, I'd be more inclined to update my launch day PS4 (with 2TB internal) to a PS4 Pro if I can easily shift my games onto an external, and connect onto the new machine. May as well keep the 2TB while I'm at it too…

      • Pretty sure the answer is yes, as long as it's for the same user between the machines. I read it on perhaps Kotaku or Whirlpool where it had been tested.

Edit: I'm not so sure about the ability to move a game to the external drive, but any games that were installed to the external can run when connected to either machine.

      • Yes apparently you can move the external between consoles, but only if you sign in using the same account on the 2nd console.

It probably won't work very well if you are trying to use your hard drive on a friends console for example as you can't have the same game installed on both internal and external (It will force you delete it from one or the other) but for moving the data like you would like to do I think it will work well.

        • Yeah sounds like it'd suffice, atleast it'd allow me to purchase a Pro without the hassles of re-downloading.

Not that the Pro seems to be worth it at all, even with a 4K TV…. I haven't looked into the supposedly upgrades there too in the patch.

I definitely won't be using other accounts and the like, so should be 100%.

It's so seemless with the XBOX, easily shiftable between machines, hope Sony got it right.

        • @scuderiarmani:

Update 4.50 also adds boost mode to Pro which improves older games that aren't Pro patched: https://youtu.be/ftBB3ffc5A8

  • Are these powered by USB ports or do they need to be plugged Into the wall?

    • hi I have the Seagate Fast HDD portable drive 4Tb 2.5" drive and it needs 2 powered USB ports to work (uses a split cable). Specs say up to 220 MB/s.

      Joel Santo Domingo

As time goes by, it seems like we always need more storage. Even a 128GB phone will fill up with files eventually, and for many, those files are photos and videos that can't be easily replaced. The 4TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive ($149.99) has the capacity to store hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of pictures and videos, as well as files from your laptop or desktop. It has the same capacity as the Seagate Backup Plus Fast, a top pick in the category, but at almost half the cost per gigabyte. That means that for general backups and storage purposes, the Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive is our Editors' Choice for portable external hard drives.

      Design and Features
The drive is a basic box that measures 0.8 by 3.1 by 4.5 inches (HWD), and weighs about 8.6 ounces. It has a black-satin finish on its top lid, along with a disk-activity light and Seagate's new swirly logo. The logo is also echoed in the bottom-panel molding. The base of the drive lacks rubber feet, so it has a tendency to slide off of a non-flat surface. There is a micro-USB 3.0 port on the side for the included USB 3.0 cable. The 2012 version of the Seagate Backup Plus has a proprietary USM connector for Seagate's Thunderbolt adapter. USM has since become obsolete.

Formatted for NTFS out of the box, the drive will work right away with any Windows PC. If you're a Mac user, you will have to install the included NTFS driver onto your OS X device in order to use the Backup Plus, but this only takes a few minutes. If you don't want to add another driver, you can reformat the drive for HFS+ to use it with your Mac exclusively.

The included setup program also installs Seagate Dashboard, a utility that helps you back up your data, and share your pictures and videos on social media, as well as save pictures and video from your social media accounts. Seagate also includes a free 2-year subscription to 200GB of cloud storage on Microsoft's OneDrive service, and the Seagate Lyve app. Lyve lets you turn the Backup Plus into a personal cloud drive, so you can access your documents on the drive from your laptop, phone, or tablet (Android, iOS, Kindle, Mac, or Windows) via the Lyve app. You can also share your pictures and videos with friends over the Internet by emailing them a link that opens in their browser. This is similar to the services you get with the PogoPlug PC service, as seen in drives like the 2TB Toshiba Canvio Connect II and the 750GB Canvio Connect. You will have to keep your desktop or laptop on for the duration, but it's an easy way to share files over your network without having to set up a network-attached storage (NAS) appliance. The drive comes with a 2-year warranty, which better than most basic drives with a 1-year warranty, but not quite as lengthy as the 3 years offered by the 2TB Western Digital My Passport Ultra.

      Performance and Cost
The drive performed well on our benchmark tests, scoring 7,504 points on the PCMark05 hard drive test and 1,985 points on the PCMark7 test. That's significantly faster than the Western Digital My Passport Ultra, the Adata HE720, the Toshiba Canvio Connect II, and the Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC on the same tests.
