Melbourne Return Hong Kong Direct w' Qantas $648 @ IWTF (Melbourne Cup Long weekend)

330

So this isn't necessarily the cheapest way to got to HK - There's also UNDER $450 flights with Air Asia

But this is DIRECT, it's with Qantas and the Departure/Arrival times are great.

Perfect time to take advantage of the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend, escape for just under a week, explore HK for the first time, live it up at Disneyland etc…
Play around with the dates and see what you can find - there are $648 Qantas fares that shoulder this date, and $549ea if youre bringing children

To those who haven't been to HK

  • No Visa Required for Australian residents
  • Clean surroundings compared to SE Asian neighbours
  • Signage largely in English as well as Cantonese
  • Warm climate in November (similar to Brisbane)
  • Easy to get around/explore in under a week

Hope this helps someone.

November/December is usually a recommended time of year for visiting HK. Plenty to see and do, even moreso if you decide to get out of the city.

  • Still waiting for Virgin to announce its direct HK flights!! Hopefully this year..

    • Latest was it hasn't been confirmed whether they'd be flying to HK or Beijing? And it's not known whether it'll be from Sydney or Brisbane?

  • OP technically the signage is in "Chinese" :P

There's very little signage that appears in "Cantonese Cantonese" (people that speak Cantonese will know what I mean)

      • Haha I was just being very technical, but was not offended and I don't think too many people would have been.

    • I'm afraid you are wrong. All the signage are still in Traditional Chinese. That is still the main written language used in HK.

I don't believe that you really know what you are talking about "Cantonese" Cantonese. There is no such thing.

There is only one Chinese written language originally which is Traditional Chinese. The same writing is pronounced differently in Cantonese and Mandarin. (Cantonese also has more slang so actually it is more difficult to learn as well, i.e some slang meaning for similar pronounced word)

Traditional Chinese was original written Chinese but it has many strokes to learn how to write it and as a result too difficult to learn.

Illiteracy rate was too high when Communist Government won the war and took control of China. At that time to make it simpler for ppl to learn, that Mao Zedong guy, the one who destroy thousands year worth of Chinese culture during his Cultural Revolution has ordered to simplify the Chinese writing. That is why they have Simplified Chinese which is used in China now.

FYI, Mao Zedong is the one on the Chinese Reminbi banknote.

Simplified Chinese is only used in China, Taiwan and HK always use the original Chinese writing which is Traditional Chinese. Cantonese is just a dialect spoken in the Southern part of China (Canton region). Taiwan speaks Mandarin and there written language is Traditional Chinese same as HK.

So get your fact straight ;)

      • Do you know what was previously written in the OP?

edit: Oh actually, it's still written there (hasn't been updated yet).

So the post says "signage is in Cantonese" and I said it should really be "signage is in Chinese". I don't see how this is different from what you've said. You've simply added that it is in "Traditional Chinese" as opposed to "Simplified Chinese" which is correct.. I don't see how we are disagreeing.

  • Good deal OP! Wish it was for December though…

still find the weather in November too hot and humid :(

As long as you drink plenty of water, dress smart and stay out of the open sun in the middle of the day it's fine IMO. I live in Melbourne, don't really like high humidity but soldiered on; it's worth it!

    Any Cathay deals?

    • Cheapest I found was $736 with Cathay. I scored $589 last year for the same flight. I'd hazard a guess that they are going to have a sale in the next month or so for November, but not guaranteed.

  • HK Disney is good for smaller kids. Not so big also, so you dont need to walk for km and km all over the place.

HK island is cool, especially on the other side where there are no apartments and simple beaches
