1,000 Bonus Points (Worth $5 FlyBuys) on a $100 Coles Prepaid Gift MasterCard [$105] at Coles for Flybuys Members

460

This offer appears to be targeted1 and requires activation on your Flybuys account. Purchasing a $100 card (for $105, which includes a $5 purchasing fee) will earn you 1000 bonus points, worth $5 FlyBuys.

From the terms and conditions2, the offer can be redeemed multiple times during the campaign period, with a maximum of 10 qualifying cards per transaction.

There's also a bonus points offer for the $50 gift card, but you only get 500 points (Worth $2.50 Flybuys) and the purchase fee is still the same as the $100 gift card ($5 fee).

So some usefulness about having these cards:

  • Convert your $88 EFTPOS cards from Woolworths to cards that can also be used online
  • Not using one of your main cards to take advantage of free trial offers (Catch of The Day Club Catch, Foxtel Play etc)
  • Collecting rewards when using your reward cards to buy these

Max 5 per person per day, ask Coles managers

EDIT: Technically it is 10 per transaction, but the managers sometimes have an 'error of judgement" like brownwent biship, and thus will think of the old limit of 5 per transaction.

1000 points worth $5 when you buy $100 coles card for $105? why would anyone want to do this?

      • +9

look i'll admit i'm a pretty new to ozbargaining, i was just asking a question though, i don't get what the deal here is, i just don't see the value someone will have to spell it out for me.

        • +2

@Turd: wow, I feel bad using your Macquarie referral now. Way to go Turd!

      • +9

I've read and reread. I can't see any value at all here - I reckon they must be joking. However, I'll stand by in case a turd wants to insult me. That would be professional!
I like extra cash, I hunt for bargains. But pay $105 for a $100 card, and win $5 worth of points? sounds like bollocks to me, unless you're running a complex money exchange setup after buying gift cards that you can't use.
Off to the alchemist workshop to polish something.
        (err… apologie's if I cause offence)

        • haha

A lot of us purchased or can purchase the $88 EFTPOS cards from Woolies at a discount.
We use these to purchase these cards at Coles.

Thus exchanging a eGift card to a Mastercard.

Overall it is a saving of 5-50% depending where you got the original cards.

Yes it is a complex exchange of cards inception type. But play your cards right you will be well off.

On the plus side we will get points fly buys AND credit card points

        • +1

@Turd: Coles checkout may not allow split payments for giftcards.

        • @Turd: C'mon.. you boys must be having us new guys on.. it's a joke post, right?!

        • +1

What I would use this for (if i had the deal) would be to use on ATO payments for this quarter's PAYG and BAS. I like to collect rewards points - normally ATO would be $1=1pt if you are lucky - plus if its an AMEX you pay a high fee of 1.45%.
using these cards, I could spend at Coles (which nets me three points per dollar, plus pay the lower mastercard fee (0.54% to the ATO). So in effect I am converting AMEX spend to Mastercard spend for no cost (as the $5 fee of the card is offset by the Flybuys points). It isn't really a "deal" to most people, but can be useful for those in particular situations with different cards/fees/expiry dates.

@tristanium: True.I am going to convert 20k FB pts to $100 MasterCard Credits to spend elsewhere instead of Wesfarmers' stores.Best time to make FB pts more useful.

        • @Neoika: I didn't know you could use flybuy dollars to purchase giftcards .If so that's a brilliant way to use your points , especially on these cards.

          @Neoika: It allows split payments.

        • @Neoika: Tried it didn't work for me , system wouldn't allow it ,supervisor said you can no longer use flybuy dollars to purchase giftcards.

        • +1

@Triple J: It worked fine for me.Flybuys card is just an EFTPOS payment.I even used my Card A to pay for my card B scanned transaction.

        • @Neoika: yer,i am going to try again different store.

    • Free points or make use of points.

      Also as indicated..

So some usefulness about having these cards:

Convert your $88 EFTPOS cards from Woolworths to cards that can also be used online

Your going to use your $88 EFTPOS card to buy a Coles prepaid mastercard that cost $105?

You do realise $105 > $88, me thinks your going to see error 'insufficient funds' appear on the terminal.

  • Convert your $88 EFTPOS cards from Woolworths to cards that can also be used online

    How to do this?

    • You can not "convert" them, you must "use" them to purchase goods at Coles, this case the "goods" are these $100 mastercards.

    • buy Coles Prepaid Gift MasterCard using $88 EFTPOS card :)

      • +1

…which was bought via 5% off eGift Card..Triple inception!

      • +1

My experience is that the self serve machines won't let you do partial payment when buying gift cards. You should be able to do it on a staffed checkout though (subject to the discretion of the staff member).

        • Just use plat edge with 3x spend and get points!! Imagine like 1trillion dollars = 3trillion points.

        • +1

          @Turd:

Let me know when you've reached the trillion mark k.

      • +2

No point using the $88 EFTPOS cards to buy these ones (unless you bought so many that you do not know how to use them :-).
You may as well use the coles 5% discounted gift cards to buy these.
The $88 EFTPOS and the $100 Coles Prepaid Gift MasterCard both have pros and cons.
EFTPOS you can only use at the shops or post office where they have a EFTPOS terminal. But you never get charged cc fees.
Coles Prepaid Gift MasterCard you can also use online or to pay bills over the phone but for some payments you get charged a cc fee.
For both if you get them with a coles or woolworths discounted gift card (minimum 5%) it is an immediate return on investment of 5% or more.
You just have to make sure that you use all the balance.
I imagine a lot of people forget it or leave some money behind on them.

After saying that these promotions on eftpos or credit gift cards are coming very often.
I wonder if it is worth stocking up or just get a few and wait for the next promotion.

  • You should also be able to pay for these with Coles Myer Gift Cards so for those who got a bunch of them with the First Choice Amex Cashback, you'll essentially be converting them into a Mastercard.

    • +2

Technically you can not, sometimes over zealous Coles workers and Managers will not allow you and ask you to pay via Credit Card and the card must match your ID.

      To stop fraud.

This particular store can be named - Coles World Square Sydney CBD. Most likely due to huge amounts of fraud in that area.

      • +2

I have purchased these cards at 10+ different Coles stores in Melb in past 6 months and split payment is allowed, however all purchase (split or not) need staff approval if via self-service. 20% - 30% of staff will enquiry about the payment method and refuse to let you purchase gift card with gift card.

On one occasion, using split payment and gift cards, an over zealous staff stop me half way thru my transaction (i.e. after I had made part payment with some gift cards) and try to cancel my purchase. Only problem was they could not credit back the value already deducted from the 1st card I used. Next they tried to put the value back on a Coles Refund card, but then said this was usually for small amounts only (<$20) and they didn't have the authority. Next they tried to get me to purchase something in store, but i refused. Ultimately, higher management were called to sign-off on a "high value" refund card (was only $150). Whole process took 30+ mins, and held-up much of the self-service area.

    • hope you realised that the Only 1 Visa cards were a more profitable inception than these prepaid MasterCards :)

      • +1

Yep, bought an Only 1 along with all the Mastercards and paid entirely with Coles Myer gift cards (accrued via Amex cashbacks). Mastercard points were credited within a day as well as collected points for the transactions. No sign of Only 1 Visa points yet.

Coles Brunswick had the cards secured in the service desk which I couldn't be bothered queueing up an dealing with them. Coles Fitzroy however had them in a gift card rack. Checkout person let me pay on multiple gift cards. Top stuff.

        • Yeah ,i haven't received bonus points for only visa1 card yet but got mastercard points straight away .

        • @Triple J:

interestingly, the mastercard offer had the usual wait for up to 4wks specified, but the visa one didn't - and my visa offer was also activated via flybuys email

        • @tonester:yep , i activated my visa card offer too via flybuys email.

        • +1

@tonester: FlyBuys have said there was an issue last time with the internal IT system for the mastercards, now they have fixed this and they come within 1-2 days.

As for the VISA1, they said they will have it fixed by Wednesday. As the people who got them had errors. IT will fix this.

Let's hope points update around 1pm or 3pm, which is the time they usually do. If not tomrow.

        • @Turd: Thanks for info .

  • +1

Just called Flybuys, who confirmed the deal is only for the main card member [the one the email is addressed to], not for other linked members. Hope this helps :)

    • Just add that card number to the stoapp and scan that

  • +9

    Sheessh!

    1. How much is your time worth to churn gift cards?

    2. Take a step back and look at the big picture - you're wasting society's resources as a whole by doing this - your time and admin costs.

    • For some people this is fun and enjoyable. Others might like to crochet a nice blanket for a hobby

      • -2

        Yeah! :)

    • +1

$2000 worth of Mastercard at 5% off for Coles eGift card is worth $100 to me.

Getting 5% off all your spend (bills, groceries etc) over a year is worth around $2400 - so yes it is worth it (however painful)…

      • Problem is finding a store with the $100 eftpos card AND allows you to use the eGift card, the stores I been to only keep the eftpos card behind the service counter so there's no way you can buy it via self-service.

        • that's a shame - no probs here.

  • Sorry for the dumb question but these $100 cards are essentially a debit card that can be used like any debit card in any shop and online bills/shopping?
And not limited to Coles group shops?

    • Yep, they are a "CR" debit card MasterCard with a load of $100 value on them.

      http://financialservices.coles.com.au/prepaid-cards/coles-gi…

There are resitrictions on them they are:

Any form of gambling and gambling related services
      Purchase of money orders
Transactions or transfers to financial institutions
Transactions related to any form of money transfer service
Transactions which may result in the ability to access cash (other than withdrawals from your reloadable cards at ATMs)

      • Ahhh fair enough. I was going to go to the post office and bring my suitcase full of $88 cards and annoy everyone
However if you can get your hands on these $100 it's a win win!

        That's if you can

  • Sounds too complicated to me. How much money are you wasting on petrol to go from Woolworths to Coles unless they are in the same shopping complex?
I love a barging but not this one
The Woolworths $88 card was better. No need to wait for points to appear on your loyalty card

    • +2

Only real diff is the $88 one was a eftpos card, this one is a $50 or $100 MasterCard can be used online or install

  • I had a lot of problems using these cards at the ebay checkout. I couldn't use them in the end. everywhere else I tried, including AGL worked perfectly when I used them through paypal.

    • @FeRGan
Are you linking your PayPal account to one of these Coles Master Giftcards? What happens if the amuont you have to pay through PayPal is more than $100? Are you able to link more than one card to use $100 from one then another $100 from the next etc…

      • If more than $100, the card is declined and the payment is cancelled.

        • Yes so essentially you can only use them for purchases less than $100 or in person if the checkout operator lets you use multiple cards in $100 increments.
A bit difficult for online payments when there is no way to split the payment.

      • I tried to link two of these cards to my paypal. I had no money in paypal account (I had $75 and $25 left on two prepaid cards) I wanted to split the payment into $75 dollars from one of the prepaid cards, $25 on another and then finish with $100 from a groupon ebay code I bought. The ebay checkout would always throw up an error. I couldn't use the groupon voucher because "it wasn't ready", last time I buy from those pricks. I ended up using my linked bank account through paypal and using the Prepaid card as the primary source. This seemed to work since the payment went through. Later I find out that my bank account was over drawn because paypal tried to take the full amount out instead of splitting with the prepaid card. Sorry if this sounds confusing.

        • ie. PayPal does not allow splitting of payments with different cards and/or bank accounts.

  • I'm a member of Flybuys but I don't allow it to determine my purchasing. The value is largely illusory. Anyone who has an Aldi close by will save FAR more than the pathetic return from FB without having to do any additional work whatsoever.

  • Purchased one card , paid for it with discounted coles giftcard had no issues and went thru normal checkout, did add some milk and bread with it though.

  • +1

A warning to anyone looking to purchase these cards check the expiry date printed on front of card packaging. I was expecting to get a years expiry from purchase date but when i checked my balance online it said expires July 2017,and sure enough it is actually printed on the front of card packaging in small writing .

    • +1

Might have been old stock? The new ones expire like 2018 or 2019

    • +1

It is printed on the card packaging.Just pick long life ones if you can find.

    • +1

Any card that has "NEW" in a green circle on the top right is very old and will expire soon. Those with just an expiry in the top right are OK.
