Woolworths WISH eGift Cards 5.25% off @ Cashrewards

3120

I recall one of the recent deals expired earlier than the specified expiry date/time, so don't leave it too long!

Don't think these need an introduction here, but in case anyone is new to Ozbargain/WISH eGift Cards and has no idea what these are…

WISH eGift Cards are the digital version of the Woolworths WISH Gift cards which can be used at the following merchants:

  • Woolworths (can top up your Opal card, for any Sydney people)
  • Most Caltex/Woolworths (i.e. petrol) - must be Woolworths branded! (Can be converted to physical WISH gift card to maximise acceptance - see guide below)
  • Big W
  • Dan Murphy's
  • BWS
  • Thomas Dux
  • Cellarmasters
  • Masters - have they fully died yet?

This literally means you're getting a further discount off your groceries/petrol/alcohol/Opal Card that you're likely to purchase anyway.

To give some monetary examples:

Handy info about eGift Cards:

  • Available in denominations of $5-500. If you need more then just make multiple orders
  • Handy way of reaching min spend thresholds of Credit Cards ("Spend $2500 within 3 months to get 75k QFF points!")
  • Multiple use (i.e. like a debit card, keep using it until you use it up)
  • No minimum spend when using the card
  • 12 month expiry
  • Do not prevent you from earning Woolworths Rewards points (these are just a form of payment)
  • Can be stacked with almost all other promotions (these are just a form of payment)
  • Can be stored within Woolworths Money app for ease of tracking balances, expiry and transaction history: (iOS/Android (Screenshot))
  • Can be paid for using credit cards including AMEX with no surcharge (no PayPal)
  • Are categorised as "Supermarket Spend" (great for Platinum Edge & DJ AMEX Card holders)
  • The eGift Cards will generally arrive in your inbox within ~6 hours of ordering
  • Handy for getting your partner/housemate who happens to be swinging by Woolies anyway to get you the milk you forgot and pay with your eGift Card (just send them a screenshot of your card details) - no need to do bank transfers to arrange returning money!
  • System allows you to use these to pay for other gift cards - but may not be allowed by human intervention
  • This can mean an effective 5% off at other merchants by purchasing their gift cards sold at Woolworths including JB Hi-Fi, Jetstar, Freedom Furniture, Accor Hotels
  • If you ask for a refund for something you paid for with an eGift Card, they cannot re-issue you with an eGift Card. You will usually get it in the form of a "Returns Card" which is valid for either 3 months or 6 months from the time the refund is processed. Sometimes they will just give you cash (if lazy). I believe these still operate as WISH gift cards (i.e. can use it at the same merchants as eGift Cards)
  • Can be converted to physical WISH gift cards at the discretion of store staff - important for maximising acceptance at Caltex branches

To pay:

  • At self check-out, select "eGift Card" (bottom option): Photo
  • At a manned counter/cashier, say "I wish to pay by eGift Card"
  • If you only have $3.51 remaining, you can manually key that in via self check-out. You can also ask the assistant to type this in for you if it is manned.

How to visually tell if Caltex accepts WISH Physical or WISH eGift Cards (credit to cwongtech)

Fully Independent Caltex Co-branded Caltex & Woolworths Fully-Woolworths Owned Caltex
"Starmart"/Myer One Points Maybe Maybe No
Accepts 4c Fuel Voucher No Yes Yes
Accepts Woolworths WISH (Physical) No Yes Yes
Accepts Woolworths eGift Voucher No No Yes

Use this link to find Woolworths owned Caltex that accept eGift Cards. This link is the standard supermarket store locator, but also includes the locations of fully Woolworths owned Caltex locations.

You can convert (digital) eGift Cards to physical WISH cards at Woolworths to use as form of payment at your local Caltex if it is a co-branded store and not fully-woolworths owned. Self-serve can be used but requires assistance from staff to manually enter the desired value to be loaded onto the gift card to be purchased.
Do not bother trying to convert at Big W as the system no longer allows it.

But does not specify payment methods allowed. No PayPal I presume?

      • +1

Don't think so from memory. AmEx is fine though

        • Yep, all these cashback-style offers require bank account or credit card. I'll keep waiting for a repeat of the Groupon deal on Woolworths cards, like the last one, where PayPal is accepted: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/283113

        • @Joe Sixpack: Why so keen on paypal?

        • @abb: Buyer protection, better than any other form of payment … saved me a few times.

        • @Joe Sixpack: Credit cards also have buyer protection called chargebacks or disputes.

        • @ronnknee: Yep, been there done that, Paypal is better, with an online dispute process that allows formal document submission etc.

        • @Joe Sixpack:

you may need to wait a while longer, haven't seen such a deal in a long time mate.

      Thanks :)

Sorry, hijacking to get positioning + to provoke some responses.

To all who are saying that 0.25% extra is not a deal - you know what, I agree with you and can't say you're wrong. Here are my thoughts:

      • If the original 5% post (here's an early Groupon one) is considered to be a bargain, then why isn't 5.25%? In the context of relativity (because the 5% is always available), it's not a deal, but if the original 5% is considered to be a deal then there's no way that 5.25% isn't a deal.
      • Another way to put it would be, if you saw a post for "5% off WISH Gift Cards", would that be a deal? I'm sure the first time you found out about it you thought it was, and the value technically shouldn't diminish over time, but I understand the mentality that "5% is now the norm"
      • Other deals that have been posted in the past (most notable example I can think of is Cashrewards increasing eBay cashback from 1% to 1.25%) are often controversial for similar reasons and you tend to get sarcastic comments come through "lol enjoy your extra $1 on $1000 spent", so using this logic, I totally get it.
      • Besides that, I think a key difference to me is the versatility of this deal. As in point #1, I'm sure many on Ozbargain here consider the original 5% to be a deal because of how versatile these things are. You can use it on public transport expenditure, groceries, petrol. Compare that to the extra 0.25% saved for eBay through Cashrewards cashback. You're only spending if you really have stuff to buy on eBay, and a lot of that is definitely more discretionary expenditure (compared to what you can pay for with eGift cards)
      • Versatility matters - it's definitely a factor for whether a bargain is considered to be a bargain, otherwise in theory petrol price posts should receive very little positive votes (due to minute absolute savings) and Business Class airfares should receive a very high number of positive votes.
      • The other controversial thing about the eBay cashback fluctuations through CR was that it used to be higher (was it 4%?). They subsequently said something like "due to increasing costs we can't sustain this anymore" and then dropped it to 1 or 1.25%. After that, they periodically increased it to 1.5%, 2% and said stuff like "because we love you guys we're gonna increase the cashback a bit" - so I think this left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths.
      • Any other merchant/poster (especially a store rep) would get burned for posting "0.25% off RRP" - can you imagine that?!
      • I shared this because I believed people here would appreciate it, but I was still expecting some comments along the lines of "wtf @ 0.25% how is this a bargain.." (and I'm fine with that! Open discussion!)
      • I thought I would also take this opportunity to write up a mini guide/tutorial/introduction on what they are (primarily for new Ozbargainers or those who have never used these for whatever reason), as I realised the last few posts for eGift Cards have had very little information (i.e. there is assumed knowledge)
      • Your initial votes (on your comment) are vital in determining the direction of your "wtf 0.25% is nothing" comment - look at Koey's comment and cpho's comment which pretty much say the same thing but have pretty different vote outcomes! These two comments should really be closer in terms of vote outcome. But hey, Ozbargain logic!
      • +2

These two comments should really be closer in terms of vote outcome. But hey, Ozbargain logic!

The different outcomes was due to Koey's negative vote on the deal, which was outside of voting guidelines.

        When negative votes are revoked:

The community casts a number of negative comment votes to any comment by the user casting the deal votes.
A moderator deems your vote to be invalid as it doesn't conform to voting guidelines (see below for a list of inappropriate negative votes that moderators will revoke)

With regards to your second last point, making it too clear what the benefit is for some posts may result in that loophole being closed. I know we are all here to share deals and make sure we can all be part of it but there is a thin line between exposing a "deal" and exposing a loophole that if closed makes that deal less valuable. Without going into details, the attention the $88 drew resulted in impacts to myself that would not have happened if that deal had not resulted in 50 cards being sold to 1 person per store. There are always risks with posting to OB as we have seen over the years, and I personally have been happy with the lack of detail with some of the Gift Card type offers as they are clearing very good if you know how to use and abuse them :-)

I know this is a touchy subject and expect those without the assumed knowledge to not like it. But in reading some of their comments, they felt it was all a waste of time anyway…

        Happy for thoughts here.

        • +3

Yep I definitely agree and I am a firm believer in what you just said. It is for this reason I don't agree with sarcastic "oh thanks for sharing" comments in response to comments when a "good deal" is posted saying "oh it was this price last week". They're not obliged to share, and when good deals get shared (on Ozbargain, especially), it increases the demand exponentially and quickly, to the extent that it's very possible that if it's something that was dodgy to begin with will probably draw unnecessary attention to it, and eventually get cancelled/pulled (so what was the point of sharing? you ruined it for yourself). This is particularly the case when what has been shared is borderline T&Cs/illegal/dodgy, whatever you want to call it.

          Recent examples being:

          • Bankwest Qantas Transcaction Account and churning $0.01 transactions
          • 8-12 (seven 11) Fuel app hack

My view on what I've posted is that it's not really dodgy and eGift Cards are already pretty well known, especially on Ozbargain. The dodgiest thing I mentioned is probably the ability to chain the discount by using your discounted eGift cards to purchase other gift cards sold in Woolies. However, this wasn't the crux of the deal so I don't imagine it'll be a main focus of this at all. I think everything else I mentioned is fairly legitimate and in fact genuinely useful information (I hope people agree?)

In addition, I don't see me posting this as affecting it's future availability at all. I'll say it - if I believed it would, I wouldn't post it. Prime example was me not posting the Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account "hack" which I had been doing/using since Jan 2017.

The $88 EFTPOS card on the other hand is a very pure post with one very clear, versatile deal. However, to truly see value in that deal requires two things:

          • Knowledge of discounted eGift Cards
          • Knowledge that eGift Cards can be used to pay for EFTPOS gift cards at Woolies
          • And maybe as a sort of third point, knowledge that Credit Card points will be attained from purchases of eGift Cards

Otherwise as I mentioned above, that deal alone makes no sense whatsoever. You're paying $88 for $88 worth of cash. Why would you spend time buying $1 for $1? Once you factor in the points above, the deal becomes extremely apparent. And, because of how well known discounted eGift Cards are on Ozbargain, the value is clear for everyone to see.

        • @illumination: Agree. Long story short, if you look at deals holistically, rather than on a per deal basis (i.e. you look at all the current gift card deals as a whole for e.g.) only then can you extract the true value. And I think that type of effort is not for everyone :-)

Method by visual inspection to determine the THREE different Caltex store types (when you drive by):

Fully Independent Caltex Co-branded Caltex & Woolworths Fully-Woolworths Owned Caltex
"Starmart"/Myer One Points Maybe Maybe No
Accepts 4c Fuel Voucher No Yes Yes
Accepts Woolworths WISH (Physical) No Yes Yes
Accepts Woolworths eGift Voucher No No Yes

Use this link to find the Woolworths owned Caltex that will accept it:
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/StoreLocator

Other tips: You can convert eGift to WISH cards at Woolworths, if your local caltex is a Co-branded store and not a Fully-woolworths owned. Self-serve can be done but requires assistance from self-serve staff to manually enter the desired value of WISH gift card to be purchased.
Do not bother trying to convert at Big W, apparently the system does not allow it anymore.

There are a few egift sellers in OzBargain classified section that offer a higher rate (most likely they use CashRewards portal anyway).
This is better if you don't care about AMEX or credit card points. However, use at your own risk, be vigilant.
Search link here for those interested

    • Good work @cwongtech!
Re: "You can convert eGift to WISH cards at Woolworths". As Egift have a 12 month expiry, I am guessing that this would be a good way of extending the expiry period if you have egift cards expiring soon. (eg if bought a lot to achieve spending requirement for Credit Card bonus points)

    • Interesting the store locator indicates that my local will accept it but when I was there last night there was a sticker on the pump saying they don't accept digital wish cards. Sticker looked like it had been there awhile and I didn't bother trying it in store.

      • The pay-at-pump terminals definitely won't work. You need to go in store to use it.

        • Lol it didn't even occur to me that the sticker was indicating that the browser wouldn't accept it but the store would, thank you :)

    • Thanks for this. I converted my eGift card to a physical WISH giftcard today, hopefully allows me to use it at the co branded petrol stations now.

Great job, OP as well as cwongtech, on collating all the info about Wish eGift card together in this post!

  • Great timing needed to get another one. Thanks OP!

      • -2

I don't understand why anyone would get excited for a deal that is 0.25% off the regular price.

        • +2

          Because it's 5% off (the 5%).
I'm always puzzled/amused at why people get excited by most things on here, but hey it makes people happy & that's all that matters.

        • @supabrudda: Great maths! I like my maths too but I never would have thought to look at it like from that angle.

        • +1

@supabrudda: it's still a shit deal as @cpho pointed out below, you would need to spend $400 to save $1 over the regular 5% discount.

        • Fair enough. Getting annoyed makes you happy, so enjoy

    • +6

You voted + for ING Direct - Savings Maximiser 3.0% Interest Rate which went from 2.75% to 3% so a bit confused here.

      • well I have over 50k in the savings account, I'm not going to spend anything remotely close to that amount on wish gift cards. Not really a good comparison.

        • +3

an increase of 0.25% saving on WISH cards is still somewhat comparable to 0.25% increase per annum on 50k:

          50 000 * 0.25% per annum / 12 months = an extra $10.41 per month.

          Cashrewards $1000 WISH cards * 0.25% = an extra $2.5 saving

        • LOL Busted!!!

Some people might spend 50k on wish gift cards, so 0.25% is a deal.

Dont forget about the poor in Africa or South America - 1 cent is a lot to them!

        • -1

          @Turd: LOL MATE!!!!!! BUSTEDD AHAHAHAHHAAHHA

        • @Koey: ;) by a mod!

        • @Turd: Yes, you still get at least something (not much actually - pro'ly a low quality lolly/toffee) for 1 cent in Africa. Not here! Even 50 cents sound worthless here unfortunately with the way prices have been moving up for everything :)

  • Time to stock up. Thanks op.

  • -2

the prices are better at coles

    • +32

I read this in the voice from the hungry jacks ad.

    • I have 2 next door to each other, and for a lot of things you are correct.
      But definitely not for everything!
I think that they both mix it up a bit to confuse people.
Especially on anything that you buy a lot of/stock up on, compare compare compare.

    • +5

depends how many kids you have in tow.

The kids reckon they need to have 2 pieces of fruit/day,
So I take them twice a day to woolies for the free fruit (saves me a fortune). And I get to tell them about the great banana crisis of 2006 and how that massive green banana they're eating would have cost about $5 and how daddy was able to still get them for $3/kg and would swap a few of them with the girls at work for whole chocolate cakes. Ahhh them were the days.

      • +2

You take your kids 2 times a day every day to woolworths to get their daily fruit???
I do not know if there is a honorary ozbargainers badge, but if there is you definitely deserve it!!!

    • -1

The burgers are better at Hungry jacks

  • +4

So will this work this for the macquarie bank spend 250 and get 40 cash back??

  • +14

0.25% more discounted than the regular 5% is hardly a bargain
For every $400 giftcard, you save a whole extra $1. Don't spend it all at once

    • -2

I'd rather that $1 in my pocket than Woolworths.

The Woolworths app to store the cards is one of the finest apps ever developed in terms of practical usage.

      • It really depends on how quickly you use it. E.g. if you credit card statement period ends up tomorrow, you can wait a couple of days - you will miss the deal but use the banks money a month longer, which is a comparable saving with less risks involved. I mean, it's really hard to justify any risks for 0.25% :))

    • -1

      This x10000

I'm honestly bamboozled why my comment which more or less said exactly the same thing as yours got negative votes

  • +3

It all adds up in the end. I saved over $200 in 2016.
Thats a lot of eneloops, or a domestic flight, or or hard drive or 2.

    • +1

You spent $80k on petrol and groceries in 2016?

      • +4

To save $200 you need to spend only $4000. Not a big deal at all. I save around $100-150 every month.

        • +7

To save $200 at 5% is only $4k spend.
But to save $200 extra dollars at 0.25% is $80k spend. I think that's what he means.

  • Thanks for the detailed post. Just what I needed to spur me into action and get on the WISH eGift Card bandwagon.

    • +3

and don't forget the woolies money app, that way you'll always know your balance (& how many fuel vouchers you have)

    You can save money

  • +3

This can mean an effective 5% off at other merchants by purchasing their gift cards sold at Woolworths including JB Hi-Fi, Jetstar, Freedom Furniture, Accor Hotels

Come to a dilemma on using Giftcard on Jetstar.

If I use WW to buy Jetstar giftcard and purchase a flight value @ $300. with 5% you save $15 and also save those booking fees say $10 I assume. Total saving approx $25.

However, if I book with credit card which will be approx $25 more but come with insurance… um…. I guess still paying by credit card is better so I don't have to spend extra money to buy travel insurance.

    • -2

      1+1= 2

    • I didn't know you can buy Jetstar voucher at woolies

      • Yep, if you want to save the trouble, entertainment book is 5% off virgin and jetstar gift vouchers (in case you want virgin).
If you go through woolworths you get 5.25%.. and possibly a bunch of 4c fuel vouchers. I received a fuel voucher on the docket when I bought rebel gift cards over $30. Doesn't work if you're buying WISH cards though (generating fuel vouchers while converting egift to WISH), in case anyone's wondering.

    • No cc fees if you book over over phone.

  • When is there going to be a proper deal on WISH eGift cards? I'm talking 10% or more!

Amex Dan Murphy $10 off $50

      • +2

Dan Murphy eGift = Woolworths eGift, for the uninitiated.

        • Could you share where you found this info? I looked on the dm site but it doesn't mention ww.

        • +1

          @ChillBro:
The woolworths app recognises the Dan Murphys digital cards as egift cards.

        • @cwongtech: can DM card be used then for WW mobile recharges?

        • +1

          @bkoolrocks:
If WW mobile recharges are done at the front counter, you should be able to. If it's done over the phone then no.
We can do opal topup with egift at the front desk with payment by egift.

        • @cwongtech: with the mobile app or online recharges?

        • @bkoolrocks:
Probably not through online recharge or mobile app.
I don't use WW mobile though. See what payment method is offered in the app?
Press the Make Payment button and see what there is?

        • @cwongtech: There is an option for Voucher or card and if voucher is selected, it asks for the 12 digit Voucher #.
I just ported to WW and hence the qns. Thanks for your help. :-)

        • +1

          @bkoolrocks:
Egift vouchers are 19 digits to use online, 10 digits to use in-store
Wish card is the same, however you just.. don't type anything in-store instead and is accepted at all caltexes that accept 4c fuel vouchers.
Both have a 4 digit pin.

I don't think the 12 digit voucher number is the same as an egift..
If you buy the voucher in store at a woolworths I'm sure you could pay by egift though!

      • +2

I never realised DM cards could be used at Woolies. And I have that deal sitting active on my AMEX. Great tip!

        • You been missing out on DM deals for like 4 times.

How many amex's do you have? Everyone is allowed 5 per card.

        • @Turd: Only 1 AMEX, but in the process of getting more. I love Shop Small and CASHBACK! (Building up a pretty big collection of unspent giftcards though – Harvey Norman, Woolies, First Choice…)

          @railspider: Me too!!

      8.88% for CNY is better

      • Good idea…
        I'll buy $888

        • Max is $500 unfortunately.

Due to anti money laundering and fraud best practises. all gift cards have max $500

        • @Turd: For real? How would it be different from purchasing multiple $500?

        • @ronnknee: Real. Each egift card must be $500. You can buy 10trillion dollars but each of them must be $500 per egift card.

        • @Turd: That's a silly restriction then; if they're only limiting the amount but not quantity.

        • @ronnknee: Like I said to avoid money laundering, it is a industry wide thing. You wont see many gift cards valued at greater than $500

        • +1

@Turd: Yea I know but what I'm saying is, laundering $10000 on one gift card is no different than 200 x $500 gift cards.

        • @ronnknee: 10k would be required to be reported to austrac.

          200x500 might not

    • +7

The margins are very thin for woolworths.
If you want 7%, go look at classifieds where a few ozbargain members are paying a small amount for amex points.
      Currently active sellers:
POTM Listing Here, rate is 7%
HappyPuppies Listing Here, rate is 7.5%, probably due to being new
Illumuniation Listing here, rate is 7%, he is the OP of this post

      Use at your own risk.
Disclosure: I am not affiliated with any of them, I have only bought from POTM as of writing this comment but am aware of the other two sellers.

      • Hello ATO!!

        • Hello ATO!!

Except for the sellers they are spending $2 for each $95 spend.. unless there is a monetary value that can be placed on points in a rewards program they should be fine.
Wouldn't ATO think they're reckless spenders?

        • +1

@cwongtech: Possible to get higher than the 7.5% rate. Just need to know how/where to get them. You cant say for sure where the source is from.
