Further Info/Tips

There are two "tricks" that can be extremely beneficial as there is a common trend experienced by 7-Eleven App users: 1) If you receive an error processing your credit/debit card, you can purchase a 7-Eleven Gift Card in-store and apply the credits instantly onto the App. 2) You do not need to use the funds on your App to pay for the fuel, you can lock-in the price and pay via Cash or Card at the checkout saving the hassle of constantly topping up, gift cards, etc.

Being running my late model 150 kwatt car on 98 after locking in recent prices

Fuel economy is the same as 91 unleaded. Performance is the same and if there is a difference probaly marginal

Can someone explain to me why this fuel is so popular. Unless you own a high powered sports car or the manufacturer stipulates you use a high octane then this is money down the drain.

    • Because people can be easily fooled by their fallible memory.

    • People think it's much cleaner for their engine to warrant the price.

      • Yeah my local mechanic reckons it's just cleaner. Showed me the carbon build up on the spark plugs. But I'm always unsure with mechanics how much is true and how much is just heresay. I've heard many stories over the years about which brand of fuel is better, that E10 is full of impurities and water, that Ford's are better then Holden's and that Toyota's are Jap-Crap, etc etc

Anyway I switched and I reckon the acceleration is noticeably better. Economy is marginally better. But when its been only a few cents more, I'm happy to use it. But if it's 8c+ more I won't bother. If 95 is 5c+ more I won't bother.

    • +1

Would help if you specified exactly which model car you are driving. But, yes, the performance benefit is mainly for high performance cars that are tuned to run on higher octane fuels. Don't expect to feel much difference if you are driving a Corolla, although the additives in P98 do help to maintain a clean fuel system.

      • -3

Didn’t specify car as I Don’t want to be identified lol

My car does 0-100 mid 6 secs which is faster then your average car. My fuel says use 91. Only ever used 95ron when e10 was the other option.
If I need better performance i just push the pedal bit further

        • How would you be identified by telling us what car you drive?

          • +1

@billy_bob: Must be 80K high yield investment vehicle

          • +1

@billy_bob: Yeah I don't see how that is possible but I'm curious now lol

            • @tarken: I know my cars and am just curious to know what car with around 150kW can do 0-100 in 6.5 seconds, and runs on 91 fuel. I'm guessing it's a hot hatch like a Golf GTi or something, but I'm pretty sure they specify 95 octane fuel.

              • @billy_bob: Veloster turbo, Elantra SR, i30 SR, Cerato Koup perhaps?

                • @shiznit: You might be right, but no way any of those are doing 0-100 in 6.5 seconds.

        • Just tell what car it is or it’s not real.

    • this is money down the drain.

Unless you get it at 91 price :D

    • If your car is tuned to run on 91, you won't get much extra gains running it on 98.
One area which 98 is better for any car is the lower sulfur content of 98 (50ppm) vs 91 (150ppm)
I only use 98 because my car specifies 95 and then I upped the boost so pretty much needs 98 to prevent knocking.

      • Is there any way to tell what cars are tuned to run on what fuel? I’ve 2012 Mazda CX-5

        • +1

Supercharged and Turbo charged engines usually require a higher octane fuel.

Your fuel cap lid should also specify minimum requirements.

Not sure if that answers your question.

        • Your fuel cap lid should also specify minimum requirements.

          +1

Open up the little petrol cover, there should be a little sticker that says minimum RON required or even E10 suitable

The sticker was labelled by the manufacturer, so whatever they designed the engine to use.. just use that.

    • Car requires minimum u95….u98 is cheaper than u95 at times so why not :)

      • +1

^^ This, plus none of the 7/11's near me even stock 95. I found that out the hard way.

        • Yeah i went to one the other week where only one bowser had 95…whicb5 is what i had locked in. Teach me for not using local one

    • Just get the fuel that your car requires. Unless 95/98 is cheap as 91, it's not worth it.
It's a marginal difference for regular cars.
There have been some experiments, can't find the article but it's pretty straight forward.
If the economy gain % is great than or equal to price % then buy, which was about 4% 91 to 98.
      Similar to 91 and e10.
Only get e10 if price is less than or equal to 91 by 4%.
Percentages may vary dependent on vehicle.

  • +7

    Excellent work by master131!
There's even a price trends function now :D

Wonder what would happen if it were to be plotted against national average..

  • +1

@master131 would it be possible to set up price alerts with a "if this then that" formula?

i.e. If the price of 98 is within 6c of 91 then send me an alert

    • The feature is already there. Subscribe to the alert

      • It isn't. You can't do a compare against another price, it only lets you hard code values.

saved $27.54 today Thanks last Sunday U98 bargain :-)

Just got grilled by attendant about my lock-in price. Called it a scam. He said that the lock-in price was never that low around here. Wanted to know where it was locked in, I said Victoria. He didn’t believe me. He was rude, even touched my phone to move the screen up and down. I told him not to touch my phone. He said he was going to take my details “ to report it to head office” ( his words) I Didn’t give the details. Asked for my details again. I said no. He was not bringing up the payment on the eftpos so I could pay saying he wanted my details again, I refused ,So I said this is legal lock-in and that I wanted to pay and “ are you refusing to let me pay” , all of this in front of several customers. He then let me pay , and I left after getting my receipt. He then chased me out, after serving the next customer I suppose, to write down my rego..
    Lock-in price 110.9 for 98.
Will not go back to that station again. He was rude.

    • +6

      Wow what a farce

      Definitely report him to 711.

My attendant didn't bat an eye when I paid with my lock in

      • +9

You need a local to go to. I bet he was Indian?

Don't want to sound racist but did have an unpleasant experience.

I had an Indian chasing me on foot while I was driving, waving his hands on the air, told me to pay. Thought I did a drive off.

Had to show my receipt. Didn't even apologise. Just looked sorry and disappointed. I was just in the store man.

We have a nice lady at ours. She's sweet. Likes when we get a good fuel lock.

    • I feel you my dude! The attendant yesterday said that there was a 'system issue' and that it would take a few hours to fix? Not sure if he was bluffing? He said that if he scanned my voucher, the system would freeze?

He said that I should contact 7-11 support and they will credit my account. U98 110.9. I had to pay full price in-store as he wouldn't even try scanning my voucher…Price was 160 for U98 at the time…What a big waste of money and time!

I feel like now that my account will get banned. Fingers crossed it doesn't!

      • +1

Telling the truth. Froze for me too. Sent a missed fuel lock and got a top up on my account within a day.

        • Was yours genuine though? I am in NSW so I feel like it will be suss! I sent them an email already…No reply yet

          • +1

@knight321: All I can say it was a great fuel lock when I was in Morisset. The day after it worked as well. They were having issues. It's not because of you.

            • +1

@Korban Dallas: Great! Yeah I was fully cooperating with him, and paid accordingly. It just annoyed me that after filling up I get advised that there was an issue aha.

      • +1

Froze for me too. Paid full price and chased up missed discount. Credited amount in less than 24 hours. No problems, easy as.

        • Fingers crossed I get it too! Sent an email 12 am today. Lets see what happens :)

    • +2

Will not go back to that station again. He was rude.

Which one was this? So OzBargain 11-seven road trippers can avoid

      • Too easy to identify. They have cameras and time stamps.

    • +3

Just tell him not his business and the app is not designed in the way this idiot described. It can only pick up the lowest price around a neighbourhood area however it does not mean the lowest price in a neighbourhood cannot used anywhere else in Australia where 7-11 is available so he is just an idiot. It could be you were travelling in another state where the price happens to be much lower than your home state - nothing wrong about it at all.

As to asking your personal details request, a completely idiot.

      • +1

        Completely right.
This fool is acting WAY out of his range.
Anybody can 'catch' any good local price they see driving around and lock it in. There is nothing area-dependent about the price ever.
        He needs to be reported.

    • +12

      I feel you.
This happened to me in Victoria the time it was 0.01cents for 95 petrol.
The attendant started filming me because his boss said not to accept it. He said he was going to press the button that they press when someone doesn't pay for their fuel.
I then took my phone and filmed him saying my app was fake and him abusing me.. I then said I won't use the fuel lock voucher and just the credit on the app as I don't have my wallet, he kept saying the money was fake on the app too. I ended up using my credit card and took down his details - he was very proud to give his name too.

So I took it up to head office 7/11 the next day(took them a while to reply) but the lady on the line was very sympathetic and I told them I have video evidence. She gave me the whole transaction for free (as it should be) And I said if I see that staff member working there again, I'll post the video. I still go there often and I haven't seen him since!

  • wow I never had any issues. I show only the barcode, not the lock-n price.

    • Yes I was just showing the code. I think now he thought I had somehow scammed the app as I had been there several times beforehand with great lock-in prices. On another thought is he was jealous that I had a low lock-in and he could not get it. P

    • How do you show the barcode and not the lock-in price? The "voucher" covers the screen with the lock-in price at the top and the barcode below. Unless you cover the price with your hand?

And anyway the system tells them how much you saved so it's not difficult to work out (roughly) what the price differential must have been, even if they don't see the lock-in price on the screen.

      • +1

Once it tells you how much is saved, it's all already been paid for so if they ask questions you can just say thanks and walk out.

Edit: just checked the screen with barcode, yeah, doesn't look like there's a way to hide price unless you screenshot and crop. It's a pretty crappy thing for them to hound customers where people got the lock prices from. Especially when they clearly dgaf when we ask them to get freebies from the back room.

        • +1

Split screen so that only the barcode could be seen.
Attendant always asks me what price i locked in, which means they can't see the locked in price on their monitor.

          • @zah: Thanks zah. Split screen is the answer. I don't usually use split screen but I see how it works. Not that I have ever had any trouble at 7/11.

      • Maybe it depends what phone you have? On my s7 I can conveniently scroll down so all they see is the barcode and then the saving.

        • Same here with my Mi6. Attendant nearly fell over when he saw the discount lol

  • Thanks everyone. Will take your advice and stories on board. Hope no one else has to suffer this experience. cheers

  • +6

Yes I get that "wow that's a cheap price" comment time to time.. I just reply with "yeah it is" and then walk off lol

    • +1

When I lock in for my 60 year old dad, if he gets asked about the lock he always says "I don't know my son did it for me" and never had an issue.

      • +6

Next time I'll tell them "I don't know, my dad did it for me"

  • +3

    I have a 72lt, 98 voucher expiring 11:50am today. Locked @ 110.9c. PM me

    • Tried to PM but says you don't accept new msg…?

    • gone

  • +1

Haha I have three accounts. Had two locked in at $1.10 for 98. On the way home from work I filled up my car, got home, changed shirt then went with folks to fill up their car at the servo. Arrived back 30mins later, same pump, same fuel, same attendant, same phone with lockin- I don't think they even noticed. Didn't say anything.

  • Waiting for another good price lock

    • I dont see why the negative votes… 3 of my local servos are cheaper this week so it's not worth me price locking

  • +45

I'm seeing a lot of comments around negative behaviour of 7-Eleven staff when shown a cheap 'lock in; price. As a manager at a corporate 7 eleven store, I can confirm that the company pays for the discount, not the individual franchise store. The commission a store makes on fuel is 4c/L flat regardless of a fuel discount or not.

Furthermore, I'd encourage you guys to send a complaint to our customer service at 1800 247 711 if a store gave you a bad experience. 7-Eleven representatives should honor your coupon regardless where you locked it in from. :)

    • Thanks. by the way are you gonna report us for using fake location :-)

      • +4

Hey I don't know about you, but I drive very far and fast (light speed) with my phone to grab these cheap fuel prices!

      • +25

Lol no. I use it for my families vehicles!!

      • +25

C'mon mate - Wtf are you talking about??? You're speaking for yourself because I never fake my location. My work requires me to travel a lot around the country. For example, for the last couple of weeks, my company has been sending me to Eltham North and Hampton Park frequently since we're sussing out business opportunities in the area. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I'm sure a lot of OZBargainers on this fuel watch thread have similar stories like mine. Trust us, we're professionals, not everyday consumers. :)

        • Me too. ;D

An odd thing happen to the modified 7 eleven app. My primary account with a locked in price disappear when i logged out of the account, log in to a secondary account and re-logged to my primary account. Anyone experience it?

    • Nope.

    • Not sure about the modified app, but in unmodified, you can view your lock history in your settings.

It will say what price you had lock for and when it was redeemed/expired.

      • Thanks. Realized what happen now, it expired on 12.27pm.

  • Looking in to this website https://fuel.ethergroup.com.au/, I believe it can only lock in 10L of fuel? It doesn't have the option on how many L you can lock in.

    • +5

Mine locks in the max amount of litres that my credit amount allows

    • +1

Yup depends on what your credit amount is,
      It locks max possible

      • Thanks both, shall give it a go.

    • Yes it automatically locks in the highest amount possible with what amount of money you have in your account.

    • It means you don't have much credit in your account.

    • I can’t find it. Has it stopped?

      • +1

        Yes

        • Dang. i got in just in time!

  • Do you guys change your password everytime you use https://fuel.ethergroup.com.au/ or do you keep it the same unique password?

    • well.. ideally you should. but then it depends how much you trust people.

    • +1

I believe the password isn’t sent to the servers it’s all done client side so it shouldn’t be an issue.
