  • this thing is very controversial in that its only kind of its device, very interesting to read review upon.

I wish they could find away to shove a phone into this, I would buy it instantly.

  • +4
  • just needs a slight increase from Intel HD Graphics 405 a 1080p screen and an inbuilt phone and this would be the like the nokia N Gage all over again :-)

  • +3

if only sony continue the sony xperia play line

    • +1

Sony lost their ways. This should have been a SONY device to be honest given I've owned most of their UMPCs in the past from the original C1 to many of the U and UX series (U101, UX50 etc). this is what the new U series should have been if they had decided to continue doing it.

I've got one and it's very very awesome for what it can do:
    1) Runs full Office 201x and every other real Windows App you can think of including Virtualisation - Photoshop, AutoCAD, Adobe, VMWare, Virtualbox, NOX / Bluestacks (Android)
    2) Plugs into bigger monitor, keyboard and mouse - and it will be a full computer. Plug it into a USB dock and its alive with up to 4 monitor outputs.
    3) Same Specs as the Surface 3 (basic) bar the monitor res and size
    4) Plays pretty much most games up to about 2012 in 720p resolutions in 30fps (eg. Tomb Raider, Skyrim and Fallout Vegas). Newer stuff is hit and miss, and will need tweaks to get it playable (Overwatch and Doom are good examples. GTA 5 and Fallout 4 will run with a LOT of hacks). With a 5.5" screen, it looks darn good even if you tweak the graphics right down.
    5) Inbuilt XB360 controller to play them all. Emulation works fantastic and is a very good replacement for my Nvidia Shield Portable. Has touch screen as well and can do Android Emulation via NOX. Controller also doubles as a mouse.
    6) Charges via a USB-C connector on 5V/2A. Battery life is excellent - playing games on it will last 4-6 hours whilst browsing and office work will get you 8-10 hours.
    7) Game Streaming from XBOne and from Steam is just incredible.

    Now the downsides:
    1) Relatively weak hardware - top of the line Atom Chip but still a bit underpowered in GFX side. RAM is "ok" at 4GB but hard to run virtualisation.
    2) Storage - 64GB onboard with MicroSD, USB 3.0 and USB-C options to expand. Not upgradable, so you cannot store much on there. Needs to be docked to have it expand out to anything decent.
    3) Quirks and bugs - Its not super refined because of the bugs in the system. Example is the battery drain when you have too many USB devices hooked off it (eg. 1 x USB 3.0 2.5" disk and a USB-C USB Stick will cause the USB stuff to be disconnected from the system as it cannot supply enough Amps to all of the devices). Screen defaults in the system as portrait mode (even for BIOS setups) instead of Landscape.
    4) Overheating is still an issue. The latest revisions all have two fans onboard but can still be overheated - especially if you apply the GPU tweaks onto it and it will overheat system to cause crashes and shut down.
    5) very slow manufacturing and delivery - they do them in batches and on limited amounts. First in, first serve to receive them.

The last point is what potential buyers need to be wary of. Geekbuying does not have any stock of these and will need to wait for them to get their allotment before they can be sent out. I waited 55 days to get the manufacturing done and another 5 days to be delivered from China via courier. Make sure you do the courier option if you are going with Geekbuying as it will take ages otherwise.

Thanks for the overview. Very interesting. I'll confirm with GeekBuying regarding stock.

      this is a stupid device

good intentions, but the hardware isnt ready for a portable WINDOWS machine that can run decent games

its just doesnt have the power or optimisation

      • +2

It's not intended to be a GTX capable device.

      • +1

The point is, it is the best that the current technology can do given it is extremely portable (ie. It really fits in your Pocket) running off 5V,2A (10W) with the core CPU running at 1-2W depending on throttle. Most of your video cards that run decent games are 30-60W, not to mention i7 CPUs that are 15W-90W depending on cores, speed, throttle etc. Plus the fact that it plays games like Skyrim or Sleeping Dogs for up to 6 hours. Is no easy feat.

I got one at the 11/11 sale last year (about $280-290US i think).
This one of those devices you need to accept what you get.
The main reason i got it was mostly for retro/low end gaming (have i high end desktop for everything else).

I knew it wouldnt be a power house but i have been surprised at what it can run, was playing Final Fantasy X (PC steam version) on it last night without any issue, Need for speed most wanted (2005) is also fun.
Emulation wise it will run dreamcast without a problem (Skies of arcardia and sonic), gamecube (Zelda wind-walker) with some slight tweaks. PS2 is a no-go (unless you are prepared for a lot of compromises).
Game streaming works perfectly and is surprisingly satisfying.

Have not tried anything like virtualization or productivity so i cannot really comment on those (although i know it can do it, i would not like to need to type too much on the keyboard).

There is some pretty active community support for the device on a couple of forums that ultimately sold me.

    • I like Linus. Good video.

Gaming? Perfect for playing solitaire and minesweeper

    • Actually meant to be spot on for emulation and games from a few years ago. Meant to be. Anyway.

    • Seems to be able to handle Skyrim well enough.

emulation: capable of playable speeds (min 30fps) for PS1, PSP, NDS, GB, NES, SNES, GAMECUBE, DREAMCAST, MAME (all 2D games), Android etc. plays Wii and PS2 games selectively depending on the game complexity.
games at 720p 30fps: skyrim, fallout 3/vegas, SIMS 4, Simcity (latest version), Dishonored, Diablo 3, starcraft 2 etc.
games at lowered res (640x360 or lower) @30fps: sleeping dogs, tomb raider, Rise of tomb raider etc.
games playable with tweaking and lowered resolutions / textures: GTA V, Fallout 4, DOOM (2016), Overwatch

streaming from: xbone & steam working at 720p, 60fps.

Ah I wish these crappy 'netbook' look-a-likes would just die already.

    • +2

Not even close to a netbook.

      • What makes it any different apart from it having a joystick for 'gaming'?

        • For starters it's not a laptop (netbook). It's a handheld gaming console.

        • @Clear:

So just because it has a joystick, it's not a laptop?

Gaming console is a very broad statement, if it can only handle emulators then it's no better than a smartphone.

        • @cdestratis: UMPC would be the most accurate term and is advertised as one. It's designed to run midrange games, emulation and game streaming. All of which it does very well. Comments above as well as my own post show games this can run and phones cannot.

        • -2

          @Clear:

All of which it does very well.

This is quite subjective, and the term gaming is thrown around very loosely these days to sucker in those that cannot afford a proper setup.

        • -2

          @bchliu:

I'm aware it can play games, as basically any device with a GPU can, but your definition of playable is obviously very different to mine.

        • @cdestratis:
i'm sorry.. It doesnt cost $4k worth of video cards and cpus to be called a "gaming" pc.

It is not by definition a Netbook - but it is a Ultra mobile pc (UMPC). Simply because this can fit into a pocket of even jeans, whilst Netbooks do not fit and typically are 7" screens and above.

        • @bchliu:

i'm sorry.. It doesnt cost $4k worth of video cards and cpus to be called a "gaming" pc.

I never said that was the case, I just don't see how slapping a joystick on a glorified netbook is anything to call home about.

Simply because this can fit into a pocket of even jeans, whilst Netbooks do not fit and typically are 7" screens and above.

This in itself is quite a gimmick and I feel is only suitable to a very niche market.

        • @cdestratis: you asked for a definition of why it isnt a netbook: the industry actually calls it a UMPC because it is another level of portability over the netbook.
It is a niche market, but can you bring your PC along without a laptop bag? i could literally replace my work laptop with this if i was only doing the normal Office tasks and only have to hook it up to a monitor and USB dock.

        • @bchliu:

you asked for a definition of why it isnt a netbook: the industry actually calls it a UMPC because it is another level of portability over the netbook.

The only thing that made netbooks special was their form factor, which was a gimmick then and not much has changed now.

i could literally replace my work laptop with this if i was only doing the normal Office tasks and only have to hook it up to a monitor and USB dock.

Sure, I probably could also, but at what cost?

        • +2

@cdestratis: So we are just going go by your "standards" of whether it is called a NETBOOK or if it plays games over what industry has defined it and what hundreds of happy GPDwin customers already playing games on? LOL. #WORLDAUTHORITYONGAMINGSTANDARDS

        • @bchliu:

Not at all, I just don't understand the hype surrounding it and would like to inform potential buyers it may not be all it's made out to be.

Like I said, just because it can play games doesn't mean it can do it well.

        • +1

          @bchliu:
Pretty sure at this point cdestratis is just trolling - he dosent have one and wont buy one.
If you want to argue about netbook/not a netbook or gaming on a low end device go for it.

I own one, i like it, it meets my expectations.

        • @cdestratis:

I just don't understand the hype

what hype? it has 12 + votes… many people have hundreds of low-requirements-indie-games in their Steam library. Name another pocketable windows device that can play them

        • @dmaca667:

Pretty sure at this point cdestratis is just trolling

Don't be so sure, all I'm doing is offering my opinion just like others have done.

what hype? it has 12 + votes

The praise it is receiving in this thread, why is Windows necessary for it to be considered a worthy portable gaming device?

        • @mr kindface:

          what hype? it has 12 + votes…

Votes don't reflect purchases since the majority of buyers are guests. I've had a deal with less than 100 votes and more than 1000 orders. This device is for a niche market and is targeted at the niche market. I don't expect many votes for that reason.

This device is popular within the UMPC community and many thousands of those are in Asia where this was originally crowdfunded before hitting Indiegogo and international sellers.

        • +1

@cdestratis: Does that include your substitution of reality as being the authority on all opinions like whether this is a Netbook or a gaming device? LOL.. Coo-coo?.
It's great to have debates on things here but when your opinions do not constitute valid arguments whenever you lose. Its like @dmaca667 says - You've never used one, never owned one, cannot even be bothered to look into it and just think its a shit device because thats your opinion.
As for why Windows is necessary for a gaming device? Because the majority of the games that have been mentioned are Windows based. You going to play hundreds of PC Windows games natively on your portable IOS/Android/PSPGo/3DS?

        • +1

          @bchliu:

Does that include your substitution of reality as being the authority on all opinions like whether this is a Netbook or a gaming device?

I said it is very much like a netbook, just because you don't accept my opinion, does not mean that it's incorrect.

You've never used one, never owned one, cannot even be bothered to look into it and just think its a shit device because thats your opinion.

You're assuming again, I've done enough research on it to base a valid opinion, sure I have not personally owned one, but why would I need to when:

          • I don't want one
          • I don't need one
          • There are enough reviews and YouTube videos available to warrant the above two points

As for why Windows is necessary for a gaming device? Because the majority of the games that have been mentioned in this post are Windows based.

          FTFY.

What you do on an under-powered gaming device is your prerogative, but personally, if I wanted to play games only available on PC, I would do it properly.

I'd just like to state that what I've written above is again my opinion only, it is certainly not fact, just wanted to clear that up as you seem to be unable to comprehend the difference.

        • @cdestratis:

I said it is very much like a netbook, just because you don't accept my opinion, does not mean that it's incorrect.

FFS, it is incorrect according to industry. You cannot call an orange a banana, or a dog being a cat. They have different uses accordingly for different circumstances and situations.

What you do on an under-powered gaming device is your prerogative, but personally, if I wanted to play games only available on PC, I would do it properly.

You are still arguing a moot point. Most people have full blown PCs at home that they can play things in luxury. But you cannot carry a Full ATX tower out in your pocket with a 32" monitor and a gaming keyboard and mouse out to play on the street or at another location. Your argument is dead in the water when you were challenged to find a better equivalent that some people have to have a very mobile pocketable PC to do a range of stuff including games. Why do you think people are dying for Microsoft to release the Surface Phone? This is about as close to it in concept (ala Project Origami). Of course, if people want to play Fallout 4, The Division or GTA V in luxury, they'd play it at home. This is a luxury that some people can have to take out and about to play whenever they damn please.

I have no problems with your opinion. The problem is you are arguing for the wrong sake (comparing a mobile UMPC to a fixed high end desktop) with some very wrong misinformation that can affect others. Hence why three people have tried to FTFY. We are not expecting you to change your opinion BTW - just that you have been wrong from the start to compare this very visibly low-end device to a high end PC when the value statement of this device is the pocketable portability that it plays most games up to 2012.

        • @bchliu:

FFS, it is incorrect according to industry. You cannot call an orange a banana, or a dog being a cat. They have different uses accordingly for different circumstances and situations.

Says who? I'll call it whatever I like.

You are still arguing a moot point.

That's your opinion, and I respect that.

Again I understand what you're saying, and I get that there are people out there that would see worth in such a device, although I simply do not, and as such I have expressed that in this post.

I have no problems with your opinion.

I disagree, I take it you own one of these and you are too eager to defend it's honour as soon as anyone speaks ill of it.

        • @cdestratis: LOL. Debate ended. See you next time. :)

        • @bchliu:

I'm glad we could come to some sort of agreement, and I look forward to our next run-in. :)

        • @cdestratis: er… it's not a netbook. It's a portable gaming device that runs windows. Games can be played on it - just because they aren't the newest games at the highest settings doesn't mean it isn't a mobile gaming device. Not everyone needs to play games in 4K to enjoy gaming.

  • can't you use the usb-c for external graphics

    • Yes it's using HDMI C.

Edit: Yes if you're wanting to connect a monitor to it. No if you want to use a graphics dock like dmaca667 mentioned.

    • If you are thinking about running a graphics dock like the cube from razer - then no (and why would you?).
You need to have Thunderbolt 3 over USB for that thing to work, and even then, on non-razer hardware it is going to be hit or miss (Dell and MSI laptops for example).

    • yes you can use the USB-C for external graphics. You have to turn it on in the BIOS though and you need a USB-C dock such as the MINIX NEO-C that has HDMI on it. I can confirm this is working and you can stick another USb 3.0 Displaylink module (such as the Toshiba dynalink) for another 2 more monitors to total 4 including the tiny 5.5" one onboard.

Here's a couple of sites to get any potential buyers started with community support:

    sub-reddit:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/

    GPD forum on dingoonity:

go to these places if you want to check out more youtube videos of games in action and any issues that people may encounter. It's not perfect device, but it's damn good and a real eye opener in front of people who immediately ask you what it is - "world's smallest laptop capable of running Windows 10 fully". I only know of one smaller than this - but no longer manufactured and only capable of win7 (OQO pc).
