Personally, I just have a few questions, like is there any backwards compatibility for games or controllers? Is it region free? How do you expand the memory? How much internal memory is there? Is multiplayer limited to 2 people only (sliding the controllers off)? How much battery does the main system get? Is the screen a touchscreen? Do you get a portable charger so you can take it on the go, or do you need to charge it in the dock? What resolution is the screen on it? What is the price, for the console, the games and the controllers? Is that square controller configuration actually comfortable?

any backwards compatibility for games or controllers?

Most likely not due to it not being Wii branded console, however i'd think there would be exceptions like the gamecube controller adaptor for smash bros.

      Is it region free?

Its pretty much confirmed by the 3 main leakers, and many sources but would definitely love for them to give a definite answer.

How do you expand the memory?

Micro SD card slot, but it better not have a limit to 128GB, i have a 512GB one lying hear ready to use…

How much internal memory is there?

Please don't be 32GB like the leaks have mentions, that is way too small in this day and age.

Is multiplayer limited to 2 people only (sliding the controllers off)?

Seems like to be a maximum of 4 as the HORI accessory can charge 4 at once.

How much battery does the main system get?

I'd assume VITA like battery, or even a phone with high usage.
just like the leaks have said 3+ hours depending on hardware clockspeeds.

      Is the screen a touchscreen?

Yea, it's in the patents, even the top of the screen is used for notifications when docked which is really smart instead of blocking the entire screen, would have loved to have the entire screen visible though.

Do you get a portable charger so you can take it on the go, or do you need to charge it in the dock?

Probably not out of the box as all their recent sales, they do not include an AC adapter, i just really hope it has qualcoms Quick Charge 3.0 as it is confirmed USB type C.

What is the price, for the console, the games and the controllers?

A SKU code from Best Buy said for Nintendo N2 Package was 249.99USD
GAME from UK insider leaked it as 199.95GBP
This system isn't as powerful as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One S,
      I'ma take a stab that it's gunna be 399.99 AUD or 449.99, since a 3DS XL is 230ish, and PS4 Pro/XBOX One S is 500ish

Is that square controller configuration actually comfortable?

I don't think it would be, i'm going to be using it mostly in handheld mode since I loved playing in bed, or netflix in the background and play Wii U on the gamepad.

      Fingers crossed!

      • +1

I just really hope it has qualcoms Quick Charge 3.0 as it is confirmed USB type C.

It won't, as the Switch has an nvidia Tegra chip. Still hope there is some form of fast charging.

Block-quote Is there any backwards compatibility for games or controllers?

No, there's isn't any backwards compatibility with older consoles, as the Switch uses Game Cartridges.

      Block-quote Is it region free?

      Yes, it's region free.

Block-quote How do you expand the memory? How much internal memory is there?

Internal memory is 32GB, but it can take up to another 256GB on an SD card.

Block-quote Is multiplayer limited to 2 people only (sliding the controllers off)?

Up to 8 players can connect to ONE Switch console.

Block-quote How much battery does the main system get?

They said between 2.5-6.5 hours, depending on the title you're playing.

Block-quote Is the screen a touchscreen?

      Yes, there's touch.

Block-quote Do you get a portable charger so you can take it on the go, or do you need to charge it in the dock?

      Not quite sure.

Block-quote What resolution is the screen on it?

The Switch's screen is 1280 x 720 pixels, running games at 720p while in handheld and 1080p on your TV (connected via dock).

Block-quote What is the price, for the console, the games and the controllers?

The console is $469.95, 2 controllers (joy-con) $119.95, 1 controller (joy-con) $69.95, view the rest of the accessories here, https://ebgames.com.au/featured/nintendo-switch

Block-quote Is that square controller configuration actually comfortable?

No one really knows unless you physically tried it, and for each person, there's a different comfort level.

  • I'm certainly interested (and a little jealous I missed out on tickets for today's hands on event in Melbourne!)

Main thing I'd want from today is pricing and release date, as well as further details on the undocked battery life and if it's possible to charge on the go.

  • +3

I'm intrigued by the concept, but will wait till it has been out for a while before i consider purchasing one.

  • I have mixed opinion of Nintendo Switch. It's not going to be powerful (at least its clock speed suggests so), but Nintendo's hardware were lacking in processing power compared to its competition, recently at least (at least, Wii and WiiU were).

That said, I am likely to get one after the price has come down a little, because of Zelda (if that Zelda game is any good, which I think it would likely be, but no harm in waiting for a review) and other Nintendo games. Though, I am going to wait for review on the entire console first, I don't like what the hardware is turning out to be.

    • As it's a Nintendo console, it's only going to be as good as the games that are available for it. However, now that I own a PS4, I can tell you that most multiplatform current gen stuff is such graphically masturbatory sequelly crap that the market could use a good odd duckling to shake things up a bit. So comfortable in their bland, realistic mediocrity that nobody is making the colourful blockbuster Nintendo is known for, however…

At what we currently know about the games, I couldn't possible buy one; the only thing we know for certain game-wise is that it has Zelda and there will be Mario games. But Zelda is also on Wii-U, and if there's no reason to get it on the Switch over the Wii-U I'll just buy it on what I have. If Nintendo actually try, there are no doubts they'll succeed; 2014 was the year of the Wii-U, and the game catalog made the Xbone and PS4's look like Ooya's in comparison to the Wii-U's lineup. But then Nintendo got lazy, Satoru Iwata died, they got comfortable Pokemon Go money, and inevitably stopped trying to make the Wii-U good and its lineup of releases got fewer between and significantly lower in quaity (Thanks a lot Star Fox Zeros)

Nintendo seems to have partnerships with a lot of third party companies this time, though, and I don't feel like people will port their games to the Switch with lower graphics as often as they used to; This is a good thing, as it won't crowd the console's catalog with bland mediocre crap that are drowning the core consoles. Overall though, it rests on Nintendo to try and stay current without thinking that means they need to be a BETTER console; just a different one.

TL;DR Nintendo is a good but dumb company.

      • I can't remember what reviewer actually pointed this out (it might've been Jim Sterling, it might've been some random article I read online since I vaguely remember the content), WiiU was also promised with third party supports. So there is that.

The problem that I see with the console not even being able to compete with XBOX One and PS4 in terms of the spec is, I can't imagine it being easier for the third party developers to develop. If Nintendo actually gain fair bit of market share and makes it attractive for developers to develop a game on it regardless of its difficulty, that'd not be an issue. But can Nintendo name alone can sell a console to that level? Maybe, maybe not. Hence why I have mixed opinions.

Slight sidenote but Nintendo didn't get much from Pokemon Go (which actually caused a dip in Nintendo's stock price after they revealed that).

        • Maybe not directly, but it caused the community at large to remember Nintendo. Pokemon Go was a good reminder to mid-late 20ers that Nintendo still exists, and their Switch advertisement, that contained literally 0 children, is an attempt to capitalize on that market.

The Wii-U had no third party support, or rather, Nintendo paid 3 devs to make them some games and called it a day. I just find it sad that Nintendo says that they have SKyrim on the platform and they think that showing off a 6 year old game on their console is going to win them points as a 'graphical console', further pointing at Nintendo's inability to keep up with the market. I'm the first person to admit that graphics aren't important, style over pixel count; but the majority of the community doesn't agree with me, and they prefer their games to look good rather than BE good.

If they hit their core titles early and with considerable quality, as well as pay out for some timed exclusives (There's a hint at Beyond Good And Evil 2 being timed exclusive, and that's apparently a real thing that's actually getting released but I'm skeptical) they could see a lot of people getting one, maybe not as their core gaming platform but at least a healthy distraction from Grey Shooter 2017. A console F-zero, Animal Crossing, CORE-F*UCKING METROID GAME, Zelda and a couple marios could keep renew interest in the console for the nostalgia-boiz of the 90s. However, what I'd like to see is Nintendo taking a new approach. Splatoon is such a strange concept and was so well received that they should consider whacky ideas like this all the time, like they used to.

        • +1

@FrankMcFuzz: We will see. As I said, my opinion on Switch is mixed. Part of me excited, part of me is cynical about it.

Everything that happened with WiiU is exactly why I am worried about Switch. A lot of criticisms on WiiU is applicable to Switch as far as I can see. WiiU was promised with fair bit of third party support (at least that's what I've heard), but promise meant nothing. Switch having lacklustre hardware to seems like Nintendo repeating the same mistake of making their console harder develop for third party developers.

All that said, I do agree with what you are saying as well. I think the worries I have with Switch really is going to be a thing if Switch do not sell well on release. I do agree that what you are saying might apply. It all depends on how things go in future. Nintendo's console does feel like a console I might be interested because I have a PC and it wouldn't overlap with my PC.

About Pokemon Go stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if it were all Niantic and not Nintendo. Looking at how Nintendo itself is handling mobile phone/tablet section, I don't think they know how to approach the market. If they wanted to ride on that nostalgia value, they would've hit the market harder with more titles on mobile as well. I frankly think it's bloody no brainer for them to port Animal Crossing to mobile.

        • -1

@Oversimplified: Well Nintendo's approach to smartphones was "We will release 5 - 7 games over the course of 3 years" which, if you think about it, is a crap release schedule even for 'Tendo. I really like that there's an Animal Crossing game coming for my phone, but chance of Nintendo butchering it and making it a weird fremium half-breed is scary large.

Nintendo, though, have recently been trying to purposely upset their core audience. Such as Star Fox and Metroid Prime; those were intentionally designed to stick the finger up to long time fans, and from the moment they were announced people said "I don't want this and it doesn't look good". Maybe they're trying to mix things up, but jesus christ, it's been 2 very bleak years for the big N.

        • +1

@FrankMcFuzz: Crap release schedule? Like announcing a game on Keynote and waiting 3 months before releasing the game? Never. Nintendo would never do such thing.

Eh, sarcasms aside, who knows. At least Nintendo seem to have learnt from WiiU with their marketing (people who watched the promotional know what Switch is and how it is different from their older console for one thing). I am probably going to wait for the release and see what Nintendo does.

Also, ugh, if they mess Animal Crossing up for the phones, I would be not happy. If they just port 3DS version to mobile phone with extra bits utilising smartphone's hardware, that'd be all we need.

        • "Pokémon Sun and Moon have become Nintendo’s fast-selling titles ever in the Americas"

"The numbers are in, and Pokémon Sun and Moon is officially the biggest European launch of a Nintendo game, ever."

A game that Nintendo didn't even make, got Nintendo this. How is PoGo not making money for them?

        • -1

@mnermner: Pokemon Go did not make "much" money for them because they didn't develop it. It was Niantics. They did get some cash from lending out IP, but it's little considering how much Pokemon Go made and little considering how Nintendo only owns certain percentage (fairly large, if I remember correctly) of Pokemon Company. It was more of a clarification since a lot of people automatically assume (and it shows with what happened with Nintendo stock) Pokemon Go's success directly goes to Nintendo.

To quote what I was basically answering to:
"But then Nintendo got lazy, Satoru Iwata died, they got comfortable Pokemon Go money…"

They couldn't have, they didn't earn that much from it directly. They needed to do something to capitalise on Pokemon Go's success (and its impact on IP value).

To quote an article directly on Pokemon Go and how Nintendo stock price skyrocketed then plummeted:

"In a press release after the market closed on Friday in Japan, the Kyoto-based company said the game’s financial impact will be "limited" and that it is not necessary to revise its annual forecast even after factoring in current conditions."

          https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-07-25/nintendo-…

        • @Oversimplified: it's a giant ad for the Pokemon franchise which got them lots of dollars through their other Pokemon games

        • @mnermner: Yes. Pogo would have added tonnes of value to the franchise and IP.

I was simply saying they didn't earn much directly from the success of pogo. Even Nintendo was saying they didn't earn much directly (they did not adjust annual forecast and said the impact is limited). Perhaps I didn't say that clearly in the original comment.

Nintendo doesn't even directly own the Pokemon IP, they own slightly over a third of a company that does.

I was simply replying to frankmcfuzz who were saying as if Nintendo earned a lot from it directly, at least from what I can read, said that they got lazy because of all that cash. I do agree it would've added value to the IP but they needed to do something like releasing a new game to utilise that.

      • +4

Nintendo was there at the beginning, and I betcha they are still there at the end, when we ascend from digital gaming to whatever the next level is, they have unbreakable bank, infinite talent and the fearlessness you need to innovate. Saying Nintendo is a dumb company is like saying Coke marketers are dumb. Nintendo does not let itself be run by "fans".

        • Yep, respect to Nintendo for not turning away from what they believe in… yet

  • Will I get one? Probably…. ::looks under tv:: … when I can find some space, and I'll give it 6 months after release so they can iron out the production process issues.

  • If it'll play WiiU games I'll pick one up. A lot of games came out for that console that looked great, but could never rationalise buying one (plus it never went on sale!)

    • It will most definitely not play the Discs for obvious reasons (it doesn't have a disc reader), but we can hope for digital copies.

      • +1

Nintendo's digi-store is pretty reasonable these days, so I reckon this'll come pretty soon if it's not gonna be there straight away.

  • -5

Have never owned a nintendo console so maybe.. More interested in a nvidia shield tab 2 or just new android tab.. ios is pretty expensive but if no new tabs come out this year i may get an ipad pro or ipad air 2 just for the hell of it.. Will probably regret it soon after but there are some actual good ios exclusives i want to maybe play.. Mostly older games too..

I am all for tablet handheld gaming.. Left pc and console gaming a long time ago just not as convenient right now for my setup in bed.

    • +3

App store is now flooded with free to play, ad, or pay2win timed bull shit, there are a couple of gems though, i have an iPad mini 4, pretty uch got it for on the go hearthstone, Pokemon shuffle and Netflix in bed, toilet browsing.

Good to have both but if i were to choose between the Switch or an iPad, Nintendo console wins, just depends what you'd use it most for, and a gaming console will always be better than a tablet in that aspect.

      • Vainglory / War Robots and a few go titles are all i really play it for. My hope is all those cute small little tiny mini multiplayer games i used to play as a kid with friends and online for free on pc will come true only in much much more portable and simplicity form. Mobile is still developing some have got it right others not so right but we will honestly eventually get there.

    • Sad to say, you are the demographic that is destroying the indie games industry. Hope you get better soon.

  • +4

Wait one year after launch to see software line up. Then decide to buy if it is worth the money/hype.

    • +2

Waiting a year for the games range to expand on new Nintendo consoles (except handhelds) is always good practice.

      • I disagree. It's selfish. When everyone waits then developers don't develop for the console. I like Nintendo and what they do so I support them from day one. Every sale counts towards the total and the total directly affects what's developed for the console.

        • If the games you want to play were announced at the press conference then pre-order the console so you can get it at launch date. There will be competition amongst retailers, which could mean good launch bundles for a "good" price. I can't see a "sell out" on launch day for the Switch unless Nintendo intentionally limits the number of consoles for sale - to generate some PR spin on demand.

I like Nintendo too, but I'm going to wait it out for a price drop combined with a decent game(s) bundle and a decent library of games to play (that appeal to me).

        • Not buying something you're not sure you want is now selfish? Brainwashed! Unless you have an unsettled bill, you don't owe Nintendo or any developer anything.

    • +4

imagine if the whole world followed that advice.. there'd be no support for the console at all.

      • +2

        Exactly…

      • yeah right, the have to have everything now, suckers for advertising will never let that happen, and Nintendo, Xbox and Sony are not struggling startup, they are give you something new to buy every 3 years multinational corps. As an indie game dev, i can tell you, we don't develop for a certain console really, it depends on the game engine, your skillset and who is willing to publish you, believe me we are whores, we don't care who publishes us, the more the merrier, and the indie devs are the ones who need your support if you want innovation in gaming, not the money to burn corps.

  • If that region-free rumour is true, I'll be getting one. But only for the first-party games. Sure we saw Skyrim running on it, but just like all their previous consoles, third-party support is going to be mediocre at best.

If the price is right, I'll get it. I'm willing to spend $400 on one of them, provided that's the deluxe version. I'm predicting they're going to do have a $320 or so starter bundle, and a $400 deluxe one.

I skipped out on the Wii U, the PS4 and Xbox One; basically all of last gen. Maybe it's time to get back into it?

Question: Would you even call the Switch next gen? It's being released right in the middle of the PS4 and XBox One life cycle. My guess is, Nintendo realised they made a mistake with the Wii U, so they're fixing it with the Switch.

    • The Switch is their next gen, but in terms of what's already in the market, no.

If you look at the past Nintendo consoles since the NES they've had either a 6 or 5 year till they released the next home console and the switch still fits in that timeline.

$320 is a bit small I reckon as its rumoured to be $249.99USD, with the Aussie gaming tax definitely be $399+ for the basic bundle, but i'd be happy if I were wrong XD.

    • Why so much hate on the Wii U?

      • -1

Because of its predecessor the Wii. Was great but for me it didn't last too long.

        • +2

Ah that's what all my ex's say too!

      • Is it not the poorest performing nintendo home console of all time?

        • I like it, has not done me any harm or any wrong. Loads like it aint no thing, has responsive motion controls, great graphics and lets me play all my nostaligic favourites from the 80's, I judge each person as they come, and i am the same with consoles. If you don't own or havent played a significant amount of time on one, your opinion is completely invalid and bandwagonish.

        • +1

@stormii: I own one.. My "opinion" is actually a factual statement regarding its sales.

        • @supnigs: Which ones, we have Zelda 3DS XL and the Red Anniversary one and two X & Y console plus a white, red and blue one. Spewin I don't have the Animal Crossing one, it sold out too fast for me, I pre-order them all now.

        • @stormii: nice collection!

I have an aqua o3ds in pal and ntsc. Red o3ds, grey 3ds xl, pokemon Y 3ds xl, white n3ds, black n3ds xl, majoras mask n3ds xl, blue n3ds ll jap, blue 2ds,pink 2ds.

      • Is it?!?! I didn't know! That's hilarious!

  • +2

I think i'll get one. I was interested before and more so now.

  • +2

Well, the price came out (along with other stuff), $469.95 (Australian price) according to Gizmodo AU. It's not that bad considering Americans are getting it at USD $299 before tax (in terms of "Australian tax"). That said, that's a hefty amount of cash.

    • +3

$470 AUD includes tax. Remove tax it becomes $427.27

$299 USD does not include tax.

$427.27 AUD at today's currency exchange rate is $320.26

Factor in wage differences, overheads etc, pretty good

      • Yeah, I do think AUD $30 dollars (so less than 10% difference) isn't too much to call it an "Australian tax".
They do have to factor in possible changes in exchange rate, as well as other things (you've mentioned) and I reckon that's not that bad.

I am kinda thinking it's because of removal of region lock (since significant price difference will cause people to buy from cheaper countries). It might not be, but eh, I am happy about region lock being a thing of past, I might as well use everything to make it look nicer.

I do think the price they are asking is tad bit high though, but I guess their product, their price tag.

        • There is also the consideration Australia is a looooooong way away from the rest of the world, it costs them to get it here.

  • +4

    Gonna wait a year.

  • Where can you pre order?

    • Yes, and are there any incentives to preorder? Otherwise, is the Woolworths 5% off e gift cards at Big W the best way to buy?

    • Our best firend EB games

Will definitely buy - when the price is right, I have owned every Nintendo made console except for Donkey Kong Game and Watch, which broke my heart and probably is why I am an adult gamer, I wanted that orange handheld device with all my heart and never got it because I was a girl. The only time Nintendo has ever dissapointed me was with the Wii, but they were trying new things, and I love that they always are innovating.

    • Do you have fire attack? I got that

      • No i do not, I may have lied then. I will rewrite by saying I have owned every console I knew existed except my beloved DK G&W.

    • My Donkey Kong is knocked around a bit, growing up with three boys, but my wife had one too and it is in perfect condition. :-)

      • I want to tell you to shutup, but your wife owns one, so that make it a little better, like a vicarious thing.

      • dupe comment stupid mouse.

      • So time for a new mouse … deals anyone on a Razor Naga?

  • It's pricy, but is the only way to play Disgaea 5 handheld now that vita is out

Only game worth buying at launch is Zelda. Probably going to wait a bit until more stuff gets released.

1, 2, Switch doesn't tickle your scrotum fancy?

      • +1

        Nope it suck balls.

A true Ninty fanboy will tell you that Wii Sports was the best selling game of its generation.

        • @Putnum:
A true gamer would tell you the only game you ever need is Solitaire.

  • +1

Of course I'm getting one. PS4 and Xbox are basically just PC's wth a controller. That's okay if that's what youre after but Nintendo have guts and innovate. I want to support that, even if I don't always like what they do. at least it keeps things interesting.

After watching that conference, I felt it was the Wii U all over again. It's way over priced for what it is and just like its predecessors - very gimmicky. The game line up was poor and 3rd party support is very questionable at this stage.

Personally, rather than get burned like I did with the Wii U, I'll be waiting this one out to see what happens. Price will need to come down to $299/349 and third party support strong.

Here's a link to a picture showing comparisons of Zelda between the Wii U and Switch: https://twitter.com/Dystify/status/819930330014646273

      • would be good to compare Australian prices and not US.

        • The exchange rate really (profanity) us hard.

          US299 = AUD399
Then add $40GST, and the true US converted price becomes $440. So a $30 'Australia tax" markup which I guess is reasonable compared to all the electronics scams we are dealing with.

Anyway as a broke uni student, I will wait till Zelda and Mario bundle in Holiday 2017.

        • @baktiar77:

I don't think you can compare as simple as exchange rates though. Our country is completely different to the US, market is completely different.
They should have made it $399 and they will make it up in game sales. $470 just makes it too easy to go and buy another brand of console.
Nintendo is a distant 3rd to the other two, they can't price it as a premium product or it will go the way of the Wii-U in this country.
The original Wii was a smash because it was cheap and came with a great game that the whole family would play.

      • That might be the case, but this console has considerably weaker hardware. The accessories are equally expensive. I'm sure the market will quickly answer these questions a few months after release however.

    • pretty poor improvement then for a new console.

    • Well I love the Wii U, having picked one up last year as an upgrade to the Wii. Just spent the afternoon playing Nintendo Land with my son and his mate. Maybe a bit of Wind Walker tomorrow or Mario 3D World.

I love the gyros in the remote and the tactile nature of controlling the games with movements and gestures. So different to the thousands of mouse and keyboard or gamepad PC games. Was really glad the see that the Switch controllers have similar capability to the Wii remotes. Even better that the Switch pro controllers have gyros, unlike the Wii U pro controllers.

      • We loved the Wii u too. I thought it was good value… I don't know why people expect the Nintendo hardware to be half the price of PlayStation and Xbox.

Just speaking from a business perspective I would be very pessimistic as a stock holder. Nintendo is single highhandedly floated because of strong handheld sales from kid appealing games. But that wasn't always the case as we saw during the 3DS launch, it almost failed due to price. Now if Nintendo intends to replace both it's home console and handheld with the Switch, they are not only pricing this thing beyond the prices parents would be willing to pay and on top of this the usual discount you get by buying handheld type games ie rrp $50 vs $99 (Switch exists in the $99 full price point).

Very risky move by them, and they've already fumbled their first step.

    • Nintendo are targeting a more mature audience, I am sure that the 3DS / 2DS will be around for at least another year or two, for parents who want to buy their children a cheap device.

The one area where Microsoft and Sony are paying no attention, is local multiplayer. People like to get together and have gaming nights / meet up in public, and most AAA games are 1 player with online multiplayer, and their consoles are of course not portable.

Games like Splatoon / Mario Kart / Smash Bros can be enjoyed by groups of people in the same room, and they will also release a few gimmicky games.

Nintendo currently holds Pokémon tournaments for the 3DS, I can picture them starting to hold Splatoon / Mario Kart / Pokémon (when released) tournaments at convention centres, where people can bring and dock their Switch's, and vs one another on the big screens with an audience. Possibly even streamed online with eSports becoming more of a thing.

      • I will say that I'm more disappointed in the Switch now. Why? Well, I thought Nintendo could've had made great shockwaves…
        ….with this strategy:
        - Tegra X2/ 14nm 2GHz ARM Cortex A72, 900MHz Pascal cores
        - 64GB internal memory (upto 512GB expand)
        - 4h (intense) / 10h (casual) battery life
        - 45'C warm temperatures
        - (~1.1 TFlops) 720p, 35fps, Medium-setting XB1 performance
        - Lots of 3rd party involvement, like the Xbox (example Red Dead Redemption 2)
        - No gimmicks, just great hardware and a clear product

-Free online for 12 months, US$39 yearly thereafter
(online subscription has No Value unless you have games, features, and hooked users)
        - US$39 games (halfway between mobile and console prices)
        - US$399 launch price = Target adults that have money
        - US$219 discount price = Target kids soon after phasing out the 3DS from the market

What we're getting, and their strategy:
        - Tegra X1/ 28nm 2GHz ARM Cortex A57, 700MHz Maxwell cores
        - 32GB internal memory (upto 128GB expand)
        - 3h (intense) / 6h (casual) battery life
        - 50'C warm temperatures
        - (~0.7 TFlops) 720p, 25fps, Low-setting WiiU performance
        - Some 3rd party involvement, like the GameCube (example Fifa 18)
        - gimmicks galore, subpar hardware and a confusing/misleading product

-Paid online subscription, US$59 yearly thereafter
(this steep paywall ensures their online services will be lacking and unprofitable for years)
        - US$59 games (console prices)
        - US$299 launch price = Target kids with rich parents
        - US$199 discount price = Target kids who probably moved onto iOS/Android now

I think its smart for Nintendo to realise and act on the fact that they really were becoming obsolete and bankrupt, and focus on bringing their best divisions together. The Gaming Market is one of the largest and most profitable ones there is. And in this market, the biggest Sub-category is Mobile Gaming, followed by PC Gaming… console gaming is very small in comparison. So to build an ecosystem, services, and a hardware that could possibly do multiple categories and bridge the gap is a move of brilliance.
In theory. The execution is very very important though. Details do matter.
….The Nintendo Switch is being more of a PS Vita and less of a PS4. And we know how those systems fared.

        • The spec you want is borderline unachievable I reckon. Even Tegra X1 was fairly power hungry, I don't think they could've been able to use Parker (which by my knowledge is called Tegra X2 as well, though I don't think Nvidia specifically called it that). Parker uses A72 as its little cores.

The console doubles as a handheld console and I think that pretty much sealed its fate in terms of performance. High performance basically leads to the device heating up and shortens battery life. If they made Switch to be a normal console, that would've been changed. Though, I do think one of Switch's sales point comes from the fact that it doubles as a portable console so, I reckon only time will tell whether that trade was a good one or not.

I guess if nvidia and Nintendo designed a chip from scratch and used bleeding edge technology on it, a lot of that would've been less severe. Then the price would rise.

        • @Oversimplified:

          Yes, and no.
Faster hardware generates more heat, requires more power, which requires a bigger battery, which charges slowly and weighs more. I get that there are trade-offs.

What my point was the Nintendo Switch's hardware is "okay" for now.

But it looks like it drags behind the likes of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, and 821. Let alone the QSD 835.
So the Nintendo Switch's hardware will be obsolete by the end of 2016. …which has passed already, and device hasn't even launched.

And companies don't typically make the investment into a console for a short term… they look at the long-term profit.

The fact that the hardware is closer to a Wii U's performance, rather than a Xbox One's means: very little 3rd party support.

What that means is less games.
Less games, means less developer confidence in the console.
Which in turn means less games.
          Which means less sales.
Which in turn means less profit, and overall a downward trend.

The specs I put up there is 100% POSSIBLE.
This is Nintendo cheapening out on the consumers.
They are selling a cheap console, at a mid-level price, with crappy services at mid-level price.
The chance of the Nintendo Switch having as much success as the PS4 just dwindled overnight.

Nintendo in their infinite wisdom (/s) thought they could pull another Wii/Wii U.

I just don't see this being more than a One-hit wonder.
There's loads of people with a PS4, and grandma's that actually know what a PS4 is.
This will just be holiday banter until Nintendo realises their mistake.
They rely too much on nostalgia, marketing, and human stupidity.

Just like Microsoft's attitude when it came to the iPhone and Android OS.
Times have changed, and the dinosaurs have to fly with it…. or face extinction:
(Nokia, RIM, Palm, Motorola, Compaq, MySpace, Zynga, Sega etc etc)

        • @Kangal: I should correct myself. Parker uses A57, not A72 as little cores. Anyways, the little core would use as much power (On CPU end) as many phone's big cores on low load condition. In big.LITTLE combination, LITTLE cores are there to save battery, so "Denver cores" would probably use more.

So the only way they'd be able to make something like what you are saying is build one from complete scratch. There is only one company that does that for tablets and that's Apple. Only reason that I think they can do that is because they have most of the high end tablet market to themselves and even then they've started to lose profit with iPads. So yeah. I don't see building a new chip from scratch is plausible with Nvidia and Nintendo, I cannot imagine it to be profitable nor even viable.

I do remember hearing that Tegra X1 and Parker's GPU are based on desktop architecture, it's different from other ARM chips in that sense. They support more API, if I remember correctly? i.e. Tegra X1's GPU is Maxwell based and Parker's GPU is Pascal based.

I have mentioned my dislike towards the hardware spec somewhere already, literally because of the same reason. That said, I do think you are basically asking something unrealistic. I do think more reasonable expectation would be cheaper price (which is more plasuable since Nvidia Shield TV is USD $199).

        • Nintendo has never been concerned about having the best specs, nor do they need to be. The Switch is significantly different to the PS4 / Xbox One, it is really a handheld first, and a home console second. I am guessing that you don't own a 3DS or a Wii U?

Most people who own the 3DS (61 million sales) are excited about the idea of being able to play games like Pokemon (proper version) and Animal Crossing both on the go and on the big screen. People who own the Wii U are excited about being able to play full versions of games like Mario Kart 8 / Splatoon / Zelda on the go, and will be more than happy playing the games in 720p when out and about.

I am not saying that the system is perfect, a bigger battery would have been nice, can live with the storage considering the microSD slot. The one thing that they really need to fix up, is their online service, especially if they are going to charge people for it. No more of this tying digital games to consoles nonsense.

Whilst 3rd party support is important, a lot of people who own a Nintendo console, also own a PS4 or an Xbox One, or simply play those games on PC. As long as Nintendo releases good first party games, most Nintendo fans will be happy. Gamecube emulation will also be a big plus if it comes about.
