WaniKani Lifetime Membership US$199/~A$280 ($100 off until 4 January 2017)

110

If anybody is interested in learning/memorising Japanese Kanji using the popular spaced repetition website Wanikani - there is currently a sale off their lifetime membership (normally $299 USD).

I'm currently subscribed to Wanikani and i have learned more Japanese in the 8 months than I ever learned in school + 1 year of living in Japan :) It may work for you too.

(alternatively you can get 50% off their normal subscriptions (ordinarily $10USD a month, $100 USD per year) by using the code "CRAB YORI GATOR" - just tested and can confirm it works).

  • These guys been emailing me for awhile cant remember signing up but I got alot of accounts for Japanese study Im pretty sure also Japanesepod has an xmas special going(got 2 years premium for 100 dollars last year).
I have been using Jisho.org and other sites to prep for the JLPT

    • I think you can sign up and do the first couple of levels for free if you are interested in giving them a go. It starts off slow though so it'll probably be very irritating for you to do :)

  • The 50% Off voucher is much better value, it'd take 40 months before the lifetime subscription becomes more valuable and it's only a 20-month (or so) course.

I used that same coupon in May and as far as I can gather it's always available. That's the real bargain here.

yep - i'm currently on the annual membership too, but at the rate im going (one session a day on public transport before work) i'll probably end up way past the 40 month mark :) coupon needs a bit of light googling to find since i think its aimed at subscribers of their other website - just thought i'd post it up for everyone's convenience :)

As a time frame for anyone who's interested:

I started a year ago, and my daily routine is about 1 hour of practice on public transport to/from work. The estimated year of completion given my progress thus far is 09/2019.

I have the lifetime membership from a previous sale and I don't regret buying it at all. It's a hard slog and there is no real value in me knowing a lot of kanji, but I guess it makes me feel more productive than browsing reddit or playing games on the train.

    • Thats what i'm doing too! So far i found knowing Kanji helps me speculate on the ingredients on the back of various sauce bottles. :P You know, essential stuff like that

  • Thanks Beansean! Great one.

    • Thanks :)

I haven't tested WaniKani yet but I have a two years Premium subscription on www.japanesepod101.com which allows me to listen the lessons on my iPhone and so on, anyway for comparison purposes, here are their prices (in USD):
    Free - Free :)
    Basic - 12-Month Subscription = 60 / 24 months = 96
    Premium - 12-Month Subscription = 180 / 24 months 240
    Premium+ - 12-Month Subscription = 316 / 24 months = 549
I remember I got a great discount, the trick I guess is to create a free account and use for 7 to 10 days then you will start getting the "offers" to subscribe, you can see what each subscription offer here:

  • Thanks for the deal! Wondering whether it's worth it to go all out for the lifetime membership or to get an annual (50%) membership?
I'm probably around half way through N5 level.

Guess it depends how dedicated you can be with your practice - if you can finish it quicker then subscription would be the cheaper option :) they do have that thing where if you subscribe, but then decide to buy an annual membership - they will deduct your outstanding credit from the price of the lifetime membership. Maybe something to consider? :)

      • Thank you beansean, I can probably pump out 1/2-1hr of study a day.
Is $199 USD the lowest it's ever been for a lifetime subscription?

        • I think the way it works with spaced repetition, its actually fastest if you do your reviews regularly during the day whenever you get new review reminders. I'd hope an hour a day would be enought to progress quickly! I havent been looking into it for too long but Im pretty sure they have "winter sales" every december - havent ever seen it for less than $199 so far though.

Ive been using the free wanikani for about a year, and have almost maxed out at the capped level 3 (about 100 kanji). doesnt cover all the N5 kanji, but because wanikani has been the most consistent kanji learning app, i'm definitely ready to pay for subsciption and join.

I did the N5 in July this year, and passed barely for the listening test (scored 24/60, the passing score). i would encourage you to do as many online practice tests as possible, and even do some of the N4 grammar study, as there was some of that in the grammar part. its hard to find a reliable source for content to study as it changes each year. N4 in July next year.

Thanks again Beansean for the OP

      • i signed up for the 50% off annual subscription. you need the 2100-2200 kanji for the N1. After about 1000 kanji, you have enough for most japanese things. This is really good for vocabulary building too

  • There are alot of Japanese resources online I keep getting emails from Italki also as I was going to do online classes, I have been alittle lazy with my japanese pod sub I should use it more often again, became bored as it was either too slow or too fast or I would find gaps in my vocab and spend hours going studying different areas.
