Good deal, too bad Acer does not hold a reputation for manufacturing high quality and reliable products.

    • +3

I have 4 acer's laptops at home and must say that reputation is way too old.

      • I am talking from current experience. We have Acer laptops at work and they are loud, lack performance and overheat quickly.

        • I call bullshit.

We've had dozens of different models in our worplace for years with no hassles…

    • yeah and keyboards are not covered by warranty.

Here is the last ozbargain thread about the same laptop, also from good guys but at $999: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/264344

Here is a notebookcheck review of the laptop I THINK (it says "F5-573G" but good guys code is "F5-F73G"???): http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-F15-F5-573G-53V1-No…

Keep in mind the following things

    • TN panel
    • 1TB mechanical hard disk, you will probably want to add a m.2 SSD or replace the HDD. The review says it is possible, assuming the review unit is the same model.

Who buys an $899 laptop if they are planning on using a m.2 ssd..lol

      • +3

Plenty of people. An $899 laptop can easily handle most tasks, including some that a high end user would be interested in (eg programming), with disk performance being the only factor of relevance.

The price seems good but wouldn't take a Acer notebook for free.

Serious question… if we are all scared of Lenovo stealing our data, Dell has their pannel lottery and Acer makes sub-par products, what manufacturer is left?

    • +3

      Asus

      • True…I dream of a ROG for under 1k. I have been looking at a refurbished one here: http://www.cfonline.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&p…

They are all same thees days, all depend on particular model.
I had couple asuses, many of my friends suffer with broken hdd and bulged batteries on their mac's.
I have 4 acers at home and have not had any issues with them. Clean them from dust and coffee every year or so, but that is normal maintenance.

      HP

    • MSI ? Metabook ? Gigabyte ? Samsung ?

    • Razer Blade? Apple?

Can't understand the hate for Acer still, yes several years back there computers were crap, we dealt will a lot of there low end office stuff but they seem to have moved on.
I have a 4 year old V3-571G and it has been flawless in heavy everyday use, maybe I just got lucky but for around $600 its been excellent.

    • I had an acer tablet that refuse to charge after just 2 months following some windows updates, but Acer is ok to fix it free of charge, although the trouble to send it back and forth and the wait for 2 weeks to fix.

    • +1

Agreed. I would take an Acer laptop over Asus any day going by my past experience with both brands.

I agree, I have same model, bought nearlt 3.5 years ago and never miss a beat, still going strong. And my cousin has got one as well but different model from last years 6 years and he is happy with it too.

    • Same with me: I7 3630hq, nvidia 640m, 8gig RAM, replaced hdd to ssd, fullhd IPS.

Only recently ordered new battery. Replaced fan a year ago as it was becoming noisy.

    • We've been using them at work for a decade now, with almost negligible issues…unlike the HPs they replaced…it's just edgy & hip to parrot the same old drivel that's been going around for years.

  • No Wireless 802.11AC?

FYI, When I saw this deal here last Friday, I went to The Good Guys Bundall on the Gold Coast and grabbed this Laptop for my son, HoHoHo…

Anyway, the specs above are wrong, my son was installing Steam this morning and started screaming at me to go check the tech specs Steam was reporting and I double checked in Windows and as it turns out this machine comes the new Kaby Lake processor i7 7500U + Intel® HD Graphics 620 etc.

What a shocker…thought I had bought a Laptop using last year tech (Skylake i7 6500U, etc) and turns out the deal was better than I expected.

So far the kid is over the moon with it :-)

I'm curious to see if anyone else has got the same deal…

  • Looks like it's been reduced to $899 again until 5 Jan.

  • If anyone is interested in this laptop, I bought one yesterday, booted it up and then realised it has a glossy screen, not matte that I need so I'm selling it for $850.

    PM me if you're interested.
