I wouldn't say unbelievable, but they're pretty damn good specs for under $1000. Not to mention it's from The Good Guys and has their warranty and service.

      Yeah, I don't really see OP's excitement..

No AC Wifi - on a $1k laptop, really?
"U" Series CPU isn't worth getting excited over (but good enough in the budget end, not here)
No SSD and 2.25 Kg … too heavy at this price point.

      • U series CPU gives better battery life. Intel 6440HQ and 6700HQ are very power hungry.

  • +1

Very good price. Should be able to run heap of new games on low to medium settings on that grahpics card

    • +1

Not sure how well the games would run with that CPU and slow disk, Gfx on it's own isn't enough.

I would consider the ASUS X550JX-DM244T @ $1095 if gaming was your concern. It contains a GTX 950M.

    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/notebooks/16808-asus-x550jx-…

    Personally I'd also replace the sluggish 5400rpm 1TB HDD with a $75 240GB SSD.

    • +4

I would take out the dvd drive, put the ssd in a hard drive caddy and put it in the dvd drive slot. So you can have both ssd and hdd inside the laptop. And buy an external closure for the dvd drive if you need to use it

bit tricky to get a caddy for this model, even on eBay, wish it was as easy as. MacBooks .

we have 2 of the i5 versions were got when dicksmith did them for $500, and though big and plasticy the acers are Great value for money.

hmm upgrade to i7 and sell my i5 so that I have i7 and FHD ?

        • i have an older asus model in the same family (n550jv), and it wasn't very hard at all to get the right caddy to replace the disk drive with an ssd? it uses the standard generic caddy shape, 12.7mm height i'm fairly sure. very cheap on eBay.

cursory google check says the x550jx would take the same generic caddy.

      • better idea just to add an msata, m2 or NVME drive, been a long time since i saw a lappy that coupldnt take one

    • Asus is only i5 and 8 GB ram……

    • +1

      I don't know man. 4th gen i5 vs 6th Gen i7? 8GB vs 16GB ram? It's true that it's a GTX 950 but this has 4GB of Vram so I think I'll stick with this.

    • +1

Why would you consider it's better? The CPU on this ASUS is Intel 4th Gen. Core i5-4200H
Definitely not as good as 6th gen. Core i7-6500U
Furthermore, 8 GB RAM on ASUS vs 16GB on Acer.
The only thing which is better is the graphic card. But then it's only 2 GB on ASUS vs 4GB on Acer.

My view is that the above Acer is the way to go. And it's cheaper too.

      • big problem is that its an ACER, among the least reliable laptops. The ASUS is the far better platform

        • Luck of the draw with laptops really, length of warranty is more important if anything

        • @buckster:
No, the warranty actually being worth somethign matters more. Acer are legendary for crap quality AND non-existent support that takes months to repair

Personally I'd spend $100 more and get a metabox n150rd with 960m and current i7-6700hq, granted it doesn't come with OS or hdd, just scrounge a key from an old laptop and install, then add $75 ssd.

  • +2

    Needs an ssd.

    • +2

      so add one

As per Whirlpool comments - "The good guys is currently have a promotion for this Acer aspire model. You can get $50 off with the current zumbo sweet deals bring the price down to $949." Not sure what is Zumbo deal!!

    • +1

Another 25 dollars off with the voucher too if you haven't used it?

      • +5

Another $50 off if you find a pineapple in the car park.

        • +10

My days of making 50's in carparks are well behind me…

  • I don't know if it could handle any game, but it's very good performance for a laptop and for the price

  • -3

heavy, low screen resolution and graphics card

    • +4

      1920x1080 is not low resolution…

      • We are not in the nineties anymore, well CRTs had a far better resolution! Even UHD screens will be a thing of the past soon. Imagine your phone has 550 DPI resolution and these screens have 70-90 DPI! Apart from difficulties with low-resolution text and graphics jobs, The worst thing about this is that you can not work with 4 windows in one screen and need 4 screens.

        • Why would you want a higher res screen on a 15" laptop though? It's like 4k phones, seriously overkill

        • It's still the run of the mill go-to resolution. Sure its not blindingly good but it's not 1366x768

1366x768 IS low resolution for sure.

        • @buckster: 4K phones will have their place for using in VR goggles though.

        • Sure they could scan it, but most didnt have the dot pitch on the shadow mask to actually display it you know, the exception being apature grille displays like trinitrons.
I scanned 3k on a 19", but VERY few people had reason to do so.

Uh "tech freaks" wouldn't be getting excited over a dual core low voltage cpu and 940mx gpu. It isn't bad for the price, but it isn't great either, should have an ssd and AC wifi at this price. Don't buy this expecting games to look pretty, you will be on lower settings, and will not even be able to fluently play taxing or badly optimized games like GTA4.

  • +1

    All is good except these

    Processor Model: 6500U
    Wireless: 802.11b/g/n BT
Graphics Memory Card: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 4GB

    • so even graphics not good enough, cant we upgrade graphics on this machine.

      • its not usually possible in laptops. So I would assume no we cant

  • +1

the 940mx isn't bad for a laptop, but given the new 10 series 1060 and above has already been released and is a massive jump to parity with desktop chips, think it will be worth waiting to see the lower end 1040 etc as this could possible be double the performance with similar power consumption and cost

    • +1

by the way, i'm one of the few non-acer haters on here. Proud owner of a very old timeline 4820 that with an SSD upgrade still servers me very well as a secondary small form factor lappy ;) reliability has been great!

      • Timeline is fine because they're high end premium business models.

But the Aspire series is the consumer grade stuff normally peddled by big box electronics stores and they are the worst in terms of reliability — they're a valuebox model like the defunct Compaq and eMachines back in the 2010's.

      • My Acer Aspire Timeline X 3830T has been all over the world with me plus it gets used ever day as I sit at morning TV, total reliability and toughness I found. Its original battery still gives hours of use as well. My ACER Netbook (much older) is still going strong too although it's battery is kaput. Acer non-hater here too!

        • Agreed. I have the Acer Timeline X 5820T with original specs (Intel i5 first gen 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive + Windows 7) and it's still going fine after 6 years of moderate to heavy use (think high school and uni).

Purchased in 2010 for only $750 from Good Guys - I have never seen a deal that good ever since.

Except now its graphics card is old and can no longer support most new-ish games (Civ5 runs on the lowest settings but is sluggish) and weighs a tonne.

Therefore I am looking for a replacement at similar price. Minimum specs required would still be Intel i5, 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive and decent graphics to handle occasional gaming. If anyone has a recommendation please please let me know!
