VividWireless Free Delivery (10/1mbps Unlimited 4G Data for $89/Month)

190
del10off

Was looking to replace my abysmal 2.5Mbit internet connection from TPG with something better and stumbled upon Vivid Wireless. They're offering free delivery on their modems if you sign up online for any of their plans or month to month contracts.

We signed up yesterday morning, had the modem delivered by Startrack overnight - standard service - and am up and running with the following result on 1/3 bars reception according to the modem.

This can be paired with the referral code bonus by clicking below my description (to get a random referral link from one of the OzBargain members) where both you and the referrer receive a FREE SECOND MONTH of your selected plan. This code is entered when you take delivery of the modem. The Coupon Code attached is entered when purchasing the modem initially.

Check coverage before applying. 14 Day Money Back Guarantee if it's unreliable and their ETF for their contracts never exceeds the cost of the modem only. Can't lose.

I tell you, going from a degraded ADSL2+ line to this feels like a breath of fresh air.

      Says you, Mr. I'm-going-to-ponder-the-existence-of-life! :P
I don't even know how mine got there.

Edit: Oh.. "OzBargain utilises Gravatar to provide the profile avatars."

      • Hahaha, nice deal

  • +1

does the connection drop out or degrade? or are you constantly pushing the 10/1mbps speed?

    • Only had it for the afternoon, but while updating Steam games - finally - it pulled ~9GB at a constant 1.2MB/s.

For the CSGO players, we were getting 50ms ping in Competitive Matchmaking (Melbourne -> Sydney) but it was stable and extremely playable.

      • interesting, was gonna ask about gaming pings as well.

one of the concerns i have is the distance from the tower. how do you know how far you are from the nearest tower?

        • For a mobile phone, you can use an app like OpenSignal to find out which tower you're connected to.

          https://opensignal.com/app/

Go here and select Optus only, then put in your suburb. Once you've searched, go to map view and find the tower closest to your house that offers 4G 2300MHz.

Once you know where the tower is, open Google Maps and right click where the tower is (roughly) then select Measure Distance. Click on your house. A distance calculation will come up.

Mine is 700m from two towers in either direction, the modem is not directly facing either one and this is why I think I only have 1 bar. I could get it better and may try to get better ping. Playing upstairs where the modem is gives me 28ms so it could be internal wireless latency too.

        • @DarkRyoushii: cheers, set it up today and used your code. lets see what happens with the free month

        • @rogr: Didn't use my code but none the less, you've used an Ozbargainers code so I'm glad to hear!

  • It says VividWireless isn't available in my area yet I get reception with optus, whats going on there?

    • same

    • +1

2300mhz is not going on there.

    • +2

You can checked on https://oztowers.com.au/Home/Query and check if the 2300mhz is active on the optus tower. It is more up to date that the vivid website.

      • +1

This is the best way to confirm coverage, and to check distance from the tower.

    • Mine says that for my address too but I get a the max 10Mb/s. So try the suggestions as per above. Think vivid just wanna cover their asses.

  • Not really a deal because:

    • Buy from HN or TGG and get 2 months FREE (One from retailer and one from referrer)
    • Buy a modem from HN for $200 + Another $100 item and use the AMEX $100 off $300.
    • Wait for ebay promotions like TGG 20% off and get the modem for $160 upfront plus 2 months free

    YMMV

    • +1

Agreed the retailer option is better but you risk losing money.

$200 upfront cost. If you don't like it after 6 months you've paid $200.
If I don't like it after 6 months on contract I pay ~$150 ETF but the modem was free.

Going to sit on this until NBN comes to the door

      • -2

But then you saved one month ($90 for unlimited) and a further discount if you use the AMEX HN deal or the usual TGG ebay codes ($40) saving so your still ahead

  • -4

Ping time is horrible. Unless you are used it from your previous provider. My ping is about 2ms

    • +1

I don't get 2ms ping in my local network, let alone out to the internet!

      Tracing route to optus.com.au [104.97.248.187]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      2 16 ms 13 ms 15 ms 10.53.0.1
      3 * * * Request timed out.

      • You aren't using faster than light networking yet? Lame!

    • OMG! I would kill for a 2ms ping while playing games online… where do I sign up for that??

      • -2

I am with exetel. Here is a screenshot of the current speedtest but now is peak and it is a bit slower than usual. Don't understand why i am getting downvoted.

        https://postimg.org/image/rj46edpxp/

        • +2

Probably because you're comparing a 100mb/s cable/wired connection to a wireless 4g type of connection. So your comment is irrelevant. Not everyone has access to NBN and not everyone requires a 2ms ping. And to even get that 2ms ping, you must live 1 node away from the test server.

  • I've got one of these boxes, have yet to set it up yet, we're on the unlimited.

    • cool story

  • Both my home and work is in coverage. Is the modem locked to a certain tower/location, or is it portable, meaning I can bring it to work during the day and use it at home at night?

    • Not locked to a tower, take it with you

      • I suppose the other question is: is the Vivid sim locked to a specific Vivid modem, or can I buy a second hand Vivid modem and leave it at work so I just need to carry the sim card back and forth?

        • I'm not 100%, but I think you may be able to, they wont work in any other modem though.

        • My opinion is, they might maintain a white list with all of their modems - like Telstra Bigpond 4G…

When I was a BigPond customer, when I insert their SIM on other modems, I can get full bar signal but I cannot connect them to the Internet… Someone on the Whirlpool suggest to call Telstra to put the IMEI on the list (by saying it's a Enterprise grade Cisco device…etc….) It would not be the case for Vivid I believe…because they are designed for home users…

  • Thanks for posting the deal, I am about to sign up but one of the requirements to be eligible for 2nd month free through referral is:

    Your friend
Is signed up to a month to month or fixed term plan
Remained a vividwireless customer for over 21 days

You haven't been with them for over 21days?

    • Chances are you won't get my referral code anyway (there's over 60 in the pool of OzBargainers) but if you do, I have called and confirmed that you can refer ASAP and it gets credited when all conditions are met.

      • Ohh i thought the link in your post was to your referral code, it would only be fair to use yours since you posted the deal anyways if that is the process than I'll follow it.

  • So i ended up getting the vivid wireless modem from the good guys for $149 ($174 - $25digital discount). They have the modem on special until 24/12 and someone mentioned that you get 1 month free + if you use a referral code get the 2nd month free also.

  • -1

Warning guys, you can't torrent using vividwireless. They blocked it. I'm currently on them while waiting for NBN

    • eeekkk serious.. no way to bypass this? Do you mean they blocked the websites?

      • +2

I just called them to help you out and get an 'on record' answer.

The CSR told me that they don't block any protocols, but their backhaul provider DOES prioritize P2P during peak times.
It's no different to a standard ISP connection, just rate limited to 10/1.

        • +1

This seems correct, tested with downloading torrent and it was pulling 600kb/s on average while the ozspeed test was as promised, 1.2mb/s.

This is great, going to disconnect TPG tomorrow!

        • +1

          @radem12:

Really glad to hear it's working out well - this was basically my reaction too :P

    • Absolute BS
The traffic is lower priority and you know what I think its good because it means fair usage for all people not a bunch of leechers slowing the connection rates down

  • Got a 10% discount and 1month free on the home gateway at Harvey Norman very happy setup in 15mins and used the referral code generator for a extra month free as well kicking goals went from 350kbs on adsl2 exetel $65per month to 1000-1100kbs let the downloading begin

    • Glad to hear you're having a positive experience! Going up to 1MB/s+ downloads is an amazing experience, even if that's the standard speeds of vivid.

  • I went from 300kbit 4.5 ADSL2+ to 1.2mb/s with vivid, never looked back
Great for areas with congestion on rims and in horrible pair gained areas
sure its not a replacement for the NBN but it works and does the job
Can play xbox live on it no problem

    • I think they got bad reputations with their old WiMAX technology…

      2300MHz should be a much better solution….

  • Merged from Vivid Wireless 4G Gateway Free Delivered on 24-Month $89/Month Unlimited 4G Mobile Internet

Vividwireless provides wireless broadband using the Optus 4G 2300mhz spectrum, speed limited to 10mbps down / 1mbps up. According to VividWireless, the technology is purpose built for data rather than mobile phone services.

    It is simple to setup,
    * There is just one dedicated modem to connect with the wireless network
    * Plug and play modem for Self-activate within minutes

Vividwireless internet provides different plans and freedom from excess usage charges. There's no peak or off-peak periods too!
If you're after peace of mind and don't want any data limits, checkout the unlimited internet plan. For $89/month, it offers unlimited internet usage, good value! However, if you're just a light internet user; then the $29/month internet plan for 10 GB or the $59/month internet plan for 40GB, plan details can be found at https://www.vividwireless.com.au/plans

Whichever Vividwireless internet plan you choose, you can have freedom from excess usage. There will be no surprises in your monthly payment.

    • How is this a bargain?

      • +1

As far as mobile broadband goes, I don’t think you can find anything in Australia that offers unlimited mobile 4G plans for $89 a month. Plus you can technically get up to 12 month free usage via their referral program.

        • If being technical then you can't call this a 'mobile broadband' option considering the sim is locked to the modem, you can't put it into a proper mobile broadband device.

          • +1

@unco: It's not exactly compact, but the modem can also be run in a car with a 12v DC 1AMP connection, or off a similarly spec'd powerbank.

It certainly holds a signal decently in metro Sydney when driving around at least - good enough to keep the kids happy streaming YouTube. :D

        • I think richy was asking how is it a bargain as it's not much different from a posting late in December last year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/283556 ($1 diff per month) and the normal delivery price is $10 so saving $10 is not a big saving.

The monthly price is the standard unlimited rate, so while it is a good deal, and good value for money, I think the expectation is that for it to be ozbargain worthy maybe if they had 3 months free with a special code, or 20% for the first 6 months or something along those lines.

          • @digitalaxon: For example, you can get one month free if you provide a referral code when registering. It does not allow me to post the code as I am only a Learner here.

        • +1

The original iteration of Vivid Wireless sucked, I hear of recent they have stepped up their game and it's decent now, but they have reduced their coverage footprint so those who are able to apply for it, should get decent signal.
Something i'd try, but they no longer offer it in my area after they reduced coverage.
At the moment my house gets 6mbit down… on a good day.

    • +8

Max speed is rate limited to 10Mbps, so consider that if you think you will get the full 4G speed.

      • -1

        So ?

How fast in layman's terms ?

        • +1

Downloading would be approx 1 megabyte per second in transfer rate.
Edit: Presuming the connection is stable as this is a Wire-less solution, also means ping time will be greater than a cabled line.

        • To give you a fair idea of 'how fast' is 10mbps.

ADSL2 is 24 Mbps, although on average, many Australians are using it at half the speed, around 12Mbps
          Vivid is 10 Mbps
Telstra 4GX (mobile broadband) goes from 50Mbps to 75Mbps
NBN Fiber goes up to 100 Mbps

If you want to visualize how fast a file gets downloaded at various speeds, go to the Devoted website, scroll down and click Begin Simulation

      • Thanks for pointing this out.

        • You agree ? Why not add it to the OP instead of bragging about 4G LTE ?

      • +1

This service is really meant for people who have shocking ADSL (10Mbps is faster than many ADSL connections) and for homes that cannot get ADSL / Cable / NBN.

    • -2

I'm pretty certain they limit this to tthe Optus 3G network I read it in their product information somewhere

      • +2

It's using the Optus 4G 2300mhz spectrum, speed limited to 10mbps down / 1mbps up.

        • +1

Pros: my torrents DL wicked fast through a VPN but I live in Surry Hills

Con: idiot Indian call centre staff who are liars and are incompetent

        • Sorry you are correct

    • May want to mention in the title that it's $89 per month.

  • Currently have Vivid Wireless, as my place is waiting for the NBN to be connected, and doesn't have ADSL.

Got the service in December, received the full 10Mbps speeds, got January free due to a referral, and the past 2 weeks have been pretty shocking.

Getting speeds of around 1 - 3 Mbps, and I supposedly live within 3.1km of 10 x Optus 2300Mhz towers.
